Tuesday, January 30, 1990 3C IBS Jlavonrite SMH Commonwealth Games Deek's great but even A 1 xne great can weary artin set For example, I'll bet there's to weather marathon Whenever I think of legs I think of Ginger Rogers and Deek. I realise their legs hardly bear comparison when it comes to sleekness, but in their own way both these strutters' legs have made their mark on the world. Ginger used hers, with some help from a sprightly character with Brylcreem-looks named Fred Astaire, to set the movie world alight through the boyhood of your columnist, and Deek has used his to make a similarly indelible impression on me. Deek's legs are about as attractive as those on a dining-room table. And his feet! They're large and floppy and he flicks them out to the side as he runs.

Many times I've looked at him running and thought: "Hell, this guy shouldn't be able to run as well as he does with those legs. They're terrible. There must be something else." There is. Heart. Lots of it.

Don't worry about Phar Lap's ticker. When Deek eventually goes to the great Finishing Line in the sky I hope he leaves his heart to science, because it won't have seen any as big and courageous. This morning, Deek's legs and heart will again be put to the test in the Games men's marathon. You can bet his' heart won't fail him. It'll carry him to Hell and back and then some more.

As long as I live I'll never forget him after the marathon at the 1984' Los Angeles Olympics, casually telling us that when he pulled off his socks at trackside they were soaked in blood and he discovered two toenails inside them. Just like that. Two toenails had been ripped off during the race and he hadn't even noticed. So his heart's right. It's just that those old legs mightn't go the full distance in what is surely the greatest marathon field ever assembled at a Commonwealth Games.

Nearing 33 years of age, Deek's legs are tired and worn. He failed to finish a marathon for the first time at the 1987 world championships in Rome, finished eighth at the Seoul Olympics and, with The gold medal is 'really all that counts'. by her rival Sally Gunnell, of England, yesterday. "How can you trail in lane one, it is impossible. I would have landed on the rail because the hurdle was was right on the inside of the lane.

"It didn't put me off when I heard but it made me very mad, I didn't even think about the second hurdle in the final." Coach King admitted after -i i win ii imi, i hardly a soul reading this who knows who has won any of the previous Commonwealth Games marathons, other than Deek, who has taken the last two. OK, so you do remember our other Aussie winner Dave Power in 1958? But what about Kilby, Alder, Hill, Thompson and Sha-hanga, who won the marathons between the Australian triumphs? While you mightn't always remember the winners of marathons, you can often remember losers. For example, English team captain Jim Peters was the favourite at the Vancouver Games marathon of 1954, and nearing the stadium he had established a 15-minute break on the field. The stadium announcer told the crowd of Peters's arrival just as he ran down a bitumen ramp and negotiated a rough dirt track on to the arena, losing his rhythm in the process. Weakened by dehydration and complete exhaustion, Peters began to stagger drunkenly and collapsed face down.

Instinctively, he climbed back on to his feet, tottered a short distance and went down again. And so it went on, staggering and falling, his face a horrible contortion and his body movements uncontrolled in an awful ballet of agony and heroism. Metres from the line, the English team trainer could stand it no longer and grabbed Peters, who was frothing at the mouth, and helped the pathetic, unconscious figure on to a stretcher. As he was being hurried to hospital, Scot Joe McGhee entered the stadium and took the gold medal. Peters never won a gold medal and never ran competitively again.

The inaugural Olympic women's marathon in Los Angeles will similarly be remembered for the bizarre finishing lap of Gabriela Andersen-Schiess whose agonising stumbling appalled the world. Or else Kenya's Tokyo-based Douglas Wakiihuri, the Welshman Steve Jones or even Deek's tiny rival from the Brisbane Games, Juma Ikangaa, who's the most consistent runner of fast marathons in history, with 1 5 of them under 2hr 1 Omin. Moneghetti came to the fore at the previous Commonwealth Games when, running his first marathon, he wound up with a bronze medal. Since then he has established a magnificent record fourth in the world championships in Rome in 1987 and fifth in the Olympics, both run in the typically hot conditions of a summer Games. He also proved that he could run fast, as well as competitively, when he came a close second to Wakiihuri, the 1987 world champion and Olympic silver medallist, in last year's London marathon. Moneghetti ran 2:9.06, only three seconds behind Wakiihuri and two ahead of the Olympic bronze medallist Ahmed Salah, of Djibouti.

So, in his four marathons, all major events, Moneghetti has finished third, fourth, fifth and second. He's now ready for gold. Whatever the outcome, this morning's marathon, like all of those at international level, will be a story of pain and suffering. They always are. The winner regularly takes a back seat to the runner from some distant outpost who finishes a day's march behind the winner, or who collapses in a state of unbelievable self-inflicted torture.

A lesser threat may come from either of her compatriots, Marguerite Buist and the fast-improving Helen Moros, although Martin fears neither. More worrying was the possibility that her running rhythm might be adversely affected by strong winds sweeping across the exposed waterfront course. "Because I'm small I tend to be buffeted about a bit," Martin said. "It makes it difficult to keep my shape."
