WEDNESDAY, NOVE VEEP ES FROM THE COVER i. THE ARIZONA REPUBLIC ILMA PEARL ANKILLER Busy leader chose simple walking shoes i i RANDY'L TETON Coin model offers kid's moccasins li 'xp Wilma Pearl Man-killer 61, is an author, lecturer and the first female chief of the Cherokee Nation. As a high-profile voice for Native American and women's issues, she stays busy with the national lecture circuit at colleges and universities. With her husband, Charlie Soap, Mankiller lives on her grandfather's Cherokee land allotment in a small community called Mankiller Flats in rural Adair County, Okla. Mankiller said that as a child from a poor family, she never dreamed she'd visit China, meet presidents, survive cancer or lead her nation.

She and her 10 brothers and sisters rarely wore shoes in the summer. The footwear Mankiller lent to the exhibit doesn't hint at her many accomplishments, such as the 1998 Presidential Medal of Freedom and Ms. magazine's Woman of the Year in 1987. They are practical shoes RandyT Teton, 30, of Blackfoot, Idaho, holds the distinction of being the only living person to have her likeness on a United States coin. Teton was a student at the University of New Mexico when she posed for what would later become the image on the gold-colored Sacagawea dollar.

"Sacagawea was taken from our people, traded to a French Canadian fiir trader when she was about 12 years old," said Teton, a member of the Shoshone tribe. "She became his second wife. When I was growing up on the reservation, we thought she was a traitor. She traveled with these White men. But as you look more into it, she was following her duties as a wife.

She was the white flag of peace when it came to contact with the enemy tribes." The tiny moccasins Teton loaned the Heard Museum were made by her mother, Bonnie Wuttunee-Wadsworth, who also taught Teton how to tie her shoes. For Teton, the for a woman who has work to do. "I sent those shoes because I wanted to convey something about my everyday life," Mankiller said. Her black walking shoes represent normalcy, steadfastness and determination attributes not as easily conveyed by a favorite pair of red cowboy boots, for example. The shoes are comfortable and accommodate an ankle and leg brace she has worn on her right leg for the past 15 years after being seriously injured in a car accident.

Her shoes have been on airplanes and boats, in taxi-cabs and pickup trucks. Unfortunately many people could not see past the moccasins or Shortbull's heritage to focus instead on her character, talent, scholarly accomplishments or community involvement.

The year Shortbull competed in Miss America was considered one of the most racially diverse pageants in history, with an Inupiaq Eskimo, an Indian-American, an American Indian and six. Though she owns sneakers, moccasins, sandals and a pair of sequined flip-flops that she bought at Wild Horse Pass Resort, Mankiller most frequently wears durable shoes. "When I could still wear regular shoes, I loved a variety of colors and styles," Mankiller said. "I have not been able to wear pumps since I started wearing a brace, so there are none in my closet." About once a month, Shortbull travels to perform stand-up comedy. She's still learning her craft, and said her pageant experiences 'often make it into her act. Many of the statues, paintings and illustrations of Sacagawea feature a mature, older woman, not a young teenage mother. The truth is important to Teton, a commercial real estate agent. Teton could have sent another pair of moccasins, a nicer pair, in better condition, but these are the shoes that helped start her journey. "Nothing was mended," Teton said of the tiny, frayed beaded moccasins. "They depict a true story, and they were used with great pride."
