Summer Grant For Bancroft, Algona Classes Upper DesMoinesOpportunity, Inc., received word April 6 that their summer Head Start grant was approved. Grant approval comes from Don Thomason, regional director of OEO in Kansas City, Mo. Gov. Hughes has also given his consent to the grant. The grant amounted to $37,121 to establish an eight week Head Start program for the four 7 6-Algona, (la.) Upper Des Moines Tuesday, April 11, 1967 counties, Emmet, Palo Alto, Pocahontas and Kossuth. The project will serve ISOpre-school children between the ages of 4 and 6. Ninety per cent of the total enrollment must be from low income homes. These children will be youngsters who are going into kindergarten this coming fall. The summer plan includes one class in Estherville, Ringsted, Bancroft, Graettinger, Laurens and Pocahontas. Two classes will be held in Algona and Emmetsburg. Each class will average 15 children. M. Peter Hart, director of the Upper Des Moines Opportunity, Inc., will be the director of the summer project. A nurse will be in each class one day a week. The nurse will work with the health problems of the children. Each child will receive a comprehensive medical exam. The children will be taken on field trips once each week to places like the fish hatchery at Spirit Lake and the Grotto at West Bend. Breakfast is served the children as they come In the morning, and a warm meal Is provided before they are sent home. Parents are encouraged to participate in the program as volunteers In the classroom and on field trips. Meetings are scheduled to obtain ideas from the parents concerning Head Start.
