Portland .Lady Hosts Kick-Off Cancer Coffee PORTLAND - Mrs. Howard Sparks, chairman of the American Cancer Society Crusade in Portland township, was hostess at a kickoff coffee in her home, March 31, Those in attendance were Mesdames Louis Krull, John Spear, Edmund Larson, Bill Trenary, Ralph Carlson and Ervin Elmers. Others working but not able to attend were Mesdames Bernard Phelps, Jake Smith, Harley Boeckholt, Harold Lampe and Larry Dreyer. - o - Mr. and Mrs. Howard Sparks and Mrs. Ruth Sparks went to Knoxville Tuesday where they visited Dean Sparks at Veterans hospital. A neighborhood card party was held Monday night in the home of MOLLIE BLANCHARD A summer wedding is planned by Mollie Blanchard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Blanchard, Lone Rock, and James. D. Colwell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Willis F. Colwell, Algona. Miss Blanchard has been attending the American Institute of Business in Des Moines. Her fiance is in the United States Navy, stationed at Norfolk, Va. Mr. and Mrs. P. W. Marlow. About 16 people attended, Mr. and Mrs. George Koestler, Mr. and Mrs. Jay Steven, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Meister, Vivian Dutton, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Meister, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Weber, Mr. and Mrs. Jake Smith and Mrs. Dale Bixler. Mr. and Mrs. Dale Bixler of Chicago flew here for the McDonald - Akin wedding and to visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jake Smith. Mr. Bixler left for home Sunday while Mrs. Bixler the former Sheryl Smith, remained for a longer visit. Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Schwietert were Thursday supper guests in the Bill Boettcher home. Mr. and Mrs. Jake Smith left Wednesday to take their daughter, Mrs. Dale Bixler, back to Chicago after a few days' visit here. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Moore and Mr. and Mrs. Victor Fitch and Judy were dinner guests in the Chester Fitch home at Rockwell, Wednesday. In the afternoon, they visited in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hemmerich at Greene. Mrs. E. C. Schwietert attended Fortnightly Club at Mrs. Jenny Whalen's Friday afternoon. A birthday party was held Wednesday night in the Bernard Phelps home in honor of Mrs. Bernard Phelps, also a going- away party for Mrs. Paul Krominga and family, who left Thursday evening for their home in Rockford, m. Those attending were Mr. and Mrs. Mervin Bristow and Paul, Irvington, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Carroll and family, LuVerne, Mr. and Mrs. Rollo Moore and family, Lavant Moore and family and Leona Haase. Mrs. Bernard Phelps, Mrs. Paul Krominga and children drove to Fort Dodge Thursday and were supper guests in the Lester Hacker home. Later in the evening Mrs. Krominga and children left by train for their home in Illinois. Mrs. Phelps remained overnight with her sister, driving back to Titonka the next day. Mr. and Mrs. Johnny H. Harms and family and Mr. and Mrs. John K. Harms of Titonka attended the silver wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Bruno Stecker of Thompson and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Harms at Titonka.
