THE ARIZONA REPUBLIC SATURDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2006 15 7 7 Leff eager to continue work GOP senator touts experience as she pursues priorities A tradition of exceptional medical imaging. 1 L- ft .1 1 7 A jM I i Vl cr Sen. Barbara Leff, 59, is seeking her third two-year term in the Arizona Senate from District 11. "It doesn't matter if you're Republican or Democrat, this is a sophisticated district." Barbara Leff By Diana Balazs Diana. balazs arizonarepublic.com State Sen.

Barbara Leff, R-tParadise Valley, said her decade las a legislator is not done. 8 Leff, 59, is seeking her third ttyro-year term in the Arizona Senate from District 11 in the jNov. 7 general election. The veteran lawmaker also served three terms in the state House 8of Representatives. I She faces Democrat Ann jWallack, 52, a Phoenix businesswoman.

District 11 includes Paradise Valley and the neighborhoods of Arcadia, the Arizona Bilt-more, and northeast and north-central Phoenix. Leff said District 11 voters are educated, intelligent and aware. "It doesn't matter if you're Republican or Democrat, this is a sophisticated district," she said. Leff said she is not taking the election for granted despite her re-election track record. "I don't think anybody can take any election for granted.

I hope that people will recognize the hard work that I've done and will return me for another two years," she said. In addition to placing yard signs, Leff is planning a minimum of three campaign mailers. "And I'm just talking to people) telling people what I've worked on and what I believe in," she said. She takes her role as a law-. maker so seriously that she lists it as her full-time occupation.

"I tend to concentrate on doing my job that I am in right now as a state senator," she said. That includes making her-: self available to her constituents. Most of her major bills evolved from issues raised by constituents, she said. They include bills she sponsored that allows Arizonans who travel out of state to ship wine back to state and allows smaller wineries to-shiptheir wines di-- 10 OUTPATIENT IMAGING CENTERS BOARD-CERTIFIED RADIOLOGISTS Scottsdale Medical Imaging (SMIL) was established as the area's first radiology practice over 25 years ago and is trusted by area doctors to provide the best in medical imaging for their patients. We have a staff of over 30 board-certified radiologists and over 200 registered technologists who are dedicated to providing you with the high level of care you deserve.

Our 10 outpatient imaging centers are equipped with today's most innovative medical imaging equipment that is faster and more comfortable than ever before. And you'll beiappy to know that we'll provide your doctor with the results of your exam quickly, usually within 24 hours or less. These are just some of the many ways SMIL continues a tradition of exceptional medical imaging that began in 1980. REGISTERED TECHNOLOGISTS On education, Leff supports school vouchers, which would allow parents the choice of sending their children to private schools with taxpayer funds. She believes most parents will choose public education if those schools are performing adequately, but there are some children with different needs and public school does not work for them.

Leff supports full-day kindergarten, but adds that parents should have the option of a half-day program. She said she has never supported the idea of using one test such as Arizona's Instrument to Measure Standards, or AIMS as a requirement for high school graduation. Rather than be an exit exam, she would use it to determine if a child should advance from one grade to the next. When it comes to stemming illegal immigration, Leff said Arizona must play a role in securing the border. She sponsored a bill that would have made it a state crime for undocumented immigrants to be in Arizona and enable local law enforcement to arrest them.

Gov. Janet Napolitano vetoed the bill. rectly to customers who order via the Internet, fax or by mail. If re-elected, Leff said she would continue to bring experience to the Legislature. And since issues are often complicated, that institutional knowledge is a plus, Leff added.

"Because everything is so complicated it takes a long time to learn the intricacies of each of the issues and it doesn't happen overnight," she said. The issues that matter Issues of importance to District 11 voters include immigration, public safety, and health care, Leff said. "The issues that I care about health care, the economy, jobs, education, public safety, those are the things that people care about. It's not partisan," she said. Leff said the three most significant challenges facing the next Legislature are transportation planning and funding, improving education, and tackling illegal immigration.

She said the state is growing faster than roads can be built so projects in the pipeline need to be accelerated and needs prioritized so that projects that will afford the most benefit can be addressed first.
