4B High Point Enterprise, Monday, March 17, 1975 Jab bar Doesn't Want To Talk About Trade By The Associated Press Everyone wanted to know whether or not he is really seeking to be traded to Los Angeles or New York or some point in between: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar wanted to talk about Milwaukee. Indian Cager Found Stabbed To Death CHEROKEE (AP) A 22- year-old upstate New York youth competing in a basketball tournament for Indian tribes was found stabbed to death Sunday in a motel room, The FBI said. He was identified as Bradley Maybee of Gowanda, N.Y. The FBI said no one had been arrested in the case, but released no other information. The tournament for Eastern tribes was sponsored by the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians.

Maybee's high school athletic director, Howard Hillis, said Maybee was a 1970 graduate of Gowanda High School who had attended the U.S. Military- Academy at West Point for a month and later enrolled briefly at Dartmouth College. Another source said he was a freshman at Brockport (N.Y.) State College. ROARING (FROM PAGE3B) scored 25 points and led a late Creighton charge but Lucas' foul shot with nine seconds left sealed the verdict. No.

7 North Carolina, joining Maryland as the two Atlantic Coast Conference teams in this tournament and forcing defending NCAA champion North Carolina State to the sidelines, rode a 17-2 burst early in the second half to a romp over New Mexico State. Arizona State raced to a big lead, had troubles with Alabama's full court press but held on to nip the Crimson Tide. "A lot of teams given that kind of Newton, coach of lOth-ranked Alabama. "I thought we showed a Jot of class." Syracuse made it into overtime when La Salle's Joe Bryant, who scored 25 points, missed a shot with three seconds left in regulation. Syracuse then hit 10 straight foul shots and got two clutch baskets by Kevin King to nip La Salle.

Chuck Williams and Carl Gerlach each tossed in 20 points in Kansas State's upset of llth-ranked Penn. The Quakers, idle since March 1, closed to 63-58 with 1:57 left but Kansas State held on. "This is a big road trip for us, and this got us off to a good start," said the Bucks' superstar center, who scored 32 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in a nationally televised 103-90 triumph over the Chicago Bulls Sunday. "We have a good chance to make the playoffs, but a lot will depend on this trip," said Abdul-Jabbar, whose team began a six-game road swing and won't return home until March 28. "We are finally playing as a unit and I feel that our offense has got the spark it needs." The victory put the Bucks less than one percentage point behind the Detroit Pistons in the battle for the wild card playoff berth in the National Basketball Association's Western Conference.

Abdul-Jabbar avoided discussion of the report that he has asked to be traded to Los Angeles or New York. "I don't want to be involved in any problem about being traded right now, when we're fighting to make the playoffs," he said. His coach, Larry Costello, also was mum on the matter. "I'm keeping quiet about the entire subject," Costello said. Elsewhere in the NBA Sunday, the Boston Celtics beat the Houston Rockets 99-94, the Atlanta Hawks edged the Phoenix Suns 117-114, the Seattle Super-Sonics nipped the New York Knicks 97-94, the Portland Trail Blazers beat the Buffalo Braves 10295, the Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the New Orleans Jazz 113-111 and the Los Angeles Lakers topped the Golden State Warriors 111-95.

After shooting one-for-nine in the first period, Abdul- Jabbar scored 12 points in the second quarter and 10 more in the third as the Bucks surged out to a 69-47 lead. Bog Dandridge, who hit on four straight baskets as Milwaukee outscored Chicago 16-4 in a five-minute flurry, added 24 points. Bob Love had 28 points for Chicago. Celtics 99, Rockets 94 Dave Cowens set up John Havlicek for a layup and sank a basket and a free throw himself in the last two minutes to clinch Boston's triumph. Arizona Drake Captures NOT Tourney LOUISVILLE (AP) Energized by home-cooking, reed-thin Larry Haralson helped unheralded Drake outfox "The Fox" Sunday with a 73-67 victory over Arizona in the title game of the National Commissioners Invitational Basketball Tournament.

The least-surprised spectator in the slim crowd of 4,161 and a national television audience was Haralson's mother, Mae. "I knew they were going to win. Larry told me so on Thursday when 1 had him and some other boys out for supper," she said. Her Louisville-reared son, a mainstay on two straight Kentucky state title high school teams, responded to his homecoming by averaging 20 points a game in Drake's march through the eight-team tournament. But the steady play of Haralson and teammate Terry McKissick, who were both named to the all- tournament team, was only half the strategy of Bob Ortegel, Drake's first-year coach.

Arizona's racehorse attack never got out of the gate as Drake methodically and calmly protected a 10-point throughout the second half. Deadly free throw shooting by the third-place entry from the Missouri Valley Conference sealed Arizona's fate. Drake received a 24-point effort from McKissick and 20 from Haralson, while holding 6-foot-9 Al Fleming, who had a 20-point average, scoreless in the first half. But in the end, Drake's 23-of-24 foul shooting played a key part in the downfall of the favored Wildcats. Arizona, 22-7 converted six of eight free throws.

Arizona coach Fred Snowden, nicknamed "The Fox," said Drake's game plan kept the Wildcats off balance and clogged Arizona's giant-sized middle. NICKLAUS (FROM PAGE3B) later and tied for second at 279. Yancey had a closing 67, Fezler 71. Miller came on with a 67 that could have been better and took fourth at 280. He missed five consecutive birdie putts of 8-12 feet in the run down the stretch.

"My caddy and I were tearing our hair," he said. "I just knew I was gonna catch Jack." It didn't happen. Major League Preview Twins Play Pat Hand Against Champion A's ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) The Minnesota Twins stood pat during the off-season trading period, convinced they have developed the talent needed to make a run at the world champion Oakland A's in the American League West. "We know what our people can do and there's no reason to trade them after watching them matriculate," says Twins Manager Frank Quilici.

"We played the best ball in the American League the last half of the the year last season and I think our guys know they've got what it takes." Qulici, entering his third full season as a major league skipper, is looking for a left- handed starter to round out an otherwise young and capable staff anchored by Bert Blyleven and Joe Decker. "I don't think anybody in baseball has two younger, harder throwers than Blyleven and Decker," he says. "Blyleven's ready to break loose and win 23 games or so." Blyleven, who doesn't turn 24 until April 6, has already won 80 big-league games (21 by shutout) and struck out 1,094 hitters while Decker has reported with 26 of his 33 major league victories in the last two seasons. Right-hander Dave Goltz, lti-10 in 1974, is also hi the rotation. Quilici and new pitching coach Lee Stange are considering Ray Corbin and left-handers Vic Albury and Bill Butler for the other starting jobs.

The Twins' bullpen appears in good shape with crafty Bill Campbell and lefty Tom Burgmeier. The Twins are the top hitting club in the league over the last two years but have been plagued by a high strikeout frequency. Second baseman Rod Carew ripped off his third straight batting championship and fourth overall with a .364 mark last season. Outfielder Larry Hisle finished at .286, Tony Olivia .285, Brye .283, versatile Steve Brauri .280 and third ba eman Eric Soderhilm .276. Braun, who has a .277 lifetime averge, is a strong left- banded batter but hasn't been happy being shifted around the infield and field.

"He's the kind of player you win pennants with," Quilici said. "He's already ready to hit and he turned into a pretty good outfielder last year, too." Despite Quilici's plaudits, Braun isn't likely to dislodge Brye, Hisle and long-ball hitting Bob Darwin from the starting outfield jobs and rookie flash Lyman Bostock is also making a strong spring run. Braun's other position, third base, is occupied by Soderholm, who had his best season in 1974. Minnesota unloaded veteran home run hitter Harmon Killebrew in the off- season, freeing Oliva for fulltime duties as the club's designated hitter. Darwin hit .264 last season with 26 home runs and 94 runs batted in.

In three years as a regular, he has averaged 22 home runs and 88 RBI a- year. Craig Kusick starts the season at first base and Danny Thompson has sufficiently overcome a variety of medical problems to regain the starting shortstop job. Jerry Terrell provides Minnesota with a valuable utility player who can handle several positions. Terrell has excellent speed and a capable bat as evidenced by a .258 lifetime mark. Glenn Borgmann hit .252 in 'his first full season and gave Minnesota it's most capable backstopping since Earl Battey in the mid 1960s.

Borgmann had an atrocious start at the plate but hit .300 the last hall of the yar and had only two errors and four- passed balls all season. Barnes Back In Form, Hits 54 For St. Louis Dodger Runs His Dog Los Angeles Dodger pitcher John brought along his black German Shepherd, Bonny Blue, to run along with him during training at the Dodger camp in Vero Beach, Fla. John was on his way to having an outstanding year before injury knocked him out of most of last season. By The Associated Press Marvin Barnes doesn't like to leave a bad impression.

"I felt I had to come back and do something," said the Spirits of St. Louis rookie. "I embarrassed myself last time." Last time was Wednesday night against the New York Nets, when Barnes was held to just four points. Comeback time was Sunday against the Memphis Sounds. Barnes broke loose for a career-high 54 points plus 23 rebounds to help the Spirits to a 122-114 overtime victory.

He connected on 25 of his 34 attempts from the field, a sizzling 73.5 per cent. Barnes wasn't the only American Basketball Association rookie with a big game Sunday. The Indiana Pacers' Billy Knight, in his second game since being restored to the starting lineup, posted career highs of 39 points, 18 rebounds and nine assists in helping Indiana beat Virginia 121-103. Elsewhere in the ABA, the Denver Nuggets nipped the Kentucky Colonels 128-125 in overtime and the New York Nets beat the Utah Stars 10089. Barnes, the 6-foot-9 forward from Providence, netted two layups in the first 50 seconds of overtime to break a 106-106 deadlock.

The Spirits then rattled off eight more points to break the game open. "The coach motivated me," said Barnes. "He's been on me about not playing well, and he told me we had to win this game." "I told him he hasn't been playing the way he should," explained Spirits Coach Bob MacKinnon. "We look to him to be a leader on the floor, but he wasn't doing it." Until Sunday, that is. "Barnes had a sensational game," said Memphis Coach Joe Mullaney.

"He lets his shots go so quickly, it's hard to believe he can be so accurate. But he is." The victory clinched a berth in the ABA playoffs for the Spirits. Pacers 121, Squires 103 Knight took up the slack left by the absence of George McGinnis, the ABA's top scorer who missed the game with a leg injury. Indiana's other forward, Darnell Hillman, added 29 points. Pro Cage Standings By The Associated Press NBA Eastern Conference Atlantic Division Pet.

"I have to play 110 per cent every time because my opponent is always up for the match and playing 105 per cent," said Connors Sunday after beating Czehcoslo- vakia's Jan Kodes in the finals of an Independent Players Association tournament in Hampton, Va. "It's not fair for people to think I should never lose." Connors, who hasn't dropped a match since losing to Australian star John Newcombe New Year's Day, started poorly against Kodes, dropping the first set-3-6. But he was in command the rest of the way-and ran out the match; 6-3, 6-0.

"I'm starting out a little slow these days," said Connors. "Actually, that's good for me. I'm getting more competition." Elsewhere, Colombian tennis officials announced their team will boycott the North American Zone finals of the Davis Cup against South Africa to protest that country's apartheid policies. Mexico has adopted a similar position and Chile, South Africa's next opponent, may follow suit. Davis Cup officials reportedly are considering dropping South Africa from the 1976 tournament so that everyone else.will play. Honor On Way CENTERVILLE, Mass.

ORAL (FROM PAGE3B) Memphis State 97-95 Sunday in the tournament's most exciting game and advanced to a quarter-final meeting Thursday night against Oregon. The Ducks shot down St.

Peter's 85-79 Sunday. South Carolina, another of the class teams in the 16- team field, took Connecticut 71-61 Sunday to advance to Thursday's other quarterfinal game against Princeton, an 84-63 victor over Holy Cross. The Oral Roberts-Memphis State game created the most excitement of the first-round contests. Both teams came out shooting from the hip and continued to blaze away for the full 40 minutes. Oral Roberts had the last shot-a baseline beauty by Arnold Dugger at the thus had the ballgame.

"We do play defense, but we sure didn't play it tonight," said Oral Roberts Coach Jerry Hale, whose club fired 81 shots and hit the mark on 44 of them. Memphis State didn't much worse in the pro-type game. The Tigers threw up 88 shots and completed 41. "For our next Hale pointed out, "we're going to have to play some 'defense. We're not really a run-and-gun team." The winning play was as gorgeous as the rest of the game had been and put a perfect finish to the spectacular shooting show.

It was a busted play, but Dugger managed to get off a jump shot with just enough time left. "We tried to get the ball to Anthony Roberts, but we couldn't, so I had to take the said Dugger, who leaped into the arms of tern- mates after the game- 'winner. Bill Cook, the 6-foot-5 Memphis State forward who scored 18 points for the Tigers, found the ending hard to believe. He stood motionless on the Garden court for about five minutes, watching the Scoreboard as his teammates vanished into the dressing room. "It was," said Hale, "one heck of a game." Snapper Tillers.
