THE ARIZONA REPUBLIC P4 FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2006 Yellow hats off to 'George' PREVIEW WHAT PARENTS SHOULD KNOW The film contains no objectionable material. museum into a parking deck. (Other voices include Drew Barrymore, as Ted's gal pal, Maggie; Joan Plowright as Ted's blueblood neighbor, Miss Plushbottom; and Eugene Levy as avant-garde inventor Clovis.) Ted heads off on the expedition, but not before Junior fiddles with his map. Ted finds a tiny idol, which Bloomsberry mistakes in a photo for the real thing. Before Ted can return, his boss is advertising the unveiling of a gigantic find.

More importantly, Ted meets George on the trip, and the little monkey follows him onto the ship. (The studio's press notes dutifully mention that George is a chimpanzee but that he is referred to as a monkey to honor tradition.) Turned loose in what appears to be New York, George embarks on a series of adventures, finding Ted, redecorating a neighbor's apartment, flying high on a handful of balloons and accidentally projecting a giant 'CURIOUS' Continued from PI to the stories, which tap into the innocence and wonder of being a child. Instead of trying to draw each leaf and building in sparkling detail, the animators let the background blend into a series of unfinished images. This only adds to the appeal of Curious George because it focuses attention on the central characters. Another good decision: George never speaks.

He makes little monkey noises and has a splendidly expressive face, displaying the warmth found in the best hand-drawn animation. George's silence allows more airtime for the entrancing music of Jack Johnson, folksy lullabies that complement the movie's primary-colored look and feel. That leaves George's benefactor, the Man with the Yellow Hat, to do all the talking. He's voiced by Will Ferrell, who trades his usual i -kr -4 r-A U.tt,.,,..!., Ml overexuberance for a more measured approach. Given Ferrell's penchant for hamming it up, his casting could have been disaster, but director Matthew O'Callaghan keeps him in check.

Curious George is a true G-rated film. Although it has some action, none of it will scare little children. Some films that carry ratings still contain violence, but Curious George will entertain kids of almost any age. The story is easy to follow. The Man with the Yellow Hat, a a Ted, is sent to locate a long-lost African shrine and save his museum, which is run by old Mr.

Bloomsberry (Dick Van Dyke). The latter's obvious affection for Ted rankles his greedy son, Junior (David Cross), who wants to turn the UNIVERSAL PICTURES George never stops monkeying around. Here he shows his stripes as a jungle artist. among the curious, spend an afternoon with George. Reach Muller at bill.muller arizonarepublic.com or (602) 444-8651.
