(NEA) By Oswald Jacoby and Alan Sontag The notrump opening is a picture bid. In standard American it shows 16-18 high- card points and either 4-3-3-3.

4-4-3-2 or 5-3-3-2 distribution. As responder you knovv immediately where you should head. With less than eight points, you want to find the best part score; with eight or nine, you want to suggest game; with 10-14, you want to bid game; with more, you want to suggest or bid a slam. There is little need to explore when responding to notrump with a balanced hand, but even with 4-3-3-3 distribution such hands as S- A K75H-532D-K104C-Q9 8 may produce four spades and not three notrump if partner's notrump is S- 9 3 H- A 8 D- 9 7 C- A 10. Playing in spades, yoo should lose just one heart and one diamond; playing in notrump, a heart lead will knock out your ace.

If hearts break 4-4, you will still make three notrump; if they break 5-3 and the man with the long hearts holds the ace of diamonds, you will be held to two notrump. There is a well-known con- i vention today to get you to i spades with this sort of hand. I Developed by Sam Stayman and George Rapee in the early 1 Forties, it provides that the. two-club response to notrump is artificial and forcing and asks partner to bid two of a four-card major if he can. Otherwise, he rebids two diamonds.

With this responding hand, if you elect to use Stayman your next bid will be three notrump unless partner's rebid is two spades, whereupon you bid four spades. We will discuss the Stayman convention at length next week. (NEWSPAPER ENTERPRISE ASSN).
