Coach Joe Famulatte died peacefully in his sleep on March 6. A member of the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame, the Arizona Coaches Association High School Hall of Fame, and the Glen Cove, New York Hall of Fame, Joe was best known for his twenty years as basketball coach at Phoenix Indian School. The son of Italian immigrants, Joe was born October 16, 1921 and grew up in Bayville, Long Island, New York. From July 4, 1942 through December 21, 1945, he served in the United States Navy where he saw action repeatedly in the Pacific theater aboard the celebrated light cruiser, U.S.S. Montpelier, the "Mighty After the War, Joe attended George Washington University, where he played football and hit .400 while captain of the baseball team.

After a brief stint in the minor leagues, Joe moved to worked first the Phoenix Phoenix in 1952, where he Boy's Club and then as coach of all sports at St. Johns Indian School in Laveen, Arizona. In 1955, Joe received a masters degree in education from Arizona State and began his legendary career at Phoenix Indian School. Although he did not have a six foot tall player for his first nine years there, and never had a player who was more than six foot two, Joe's teams were always competitive, and exciting to watch. Lines would form midafternoon for tickets.

Games were standing room only. Despite his players' great disadvantage in size, Joe's teams were conference champions in 1958, and runners up in 1960 and 1962. The reason was conditioning, and, most of all, hustle. Joe's teams ran six miles each morning before breakfast, and played a full court press from the opening whistle. A representative press clipping from those days says, "For the second year in row the Phoenix Indian School Braves, coached by an excited, perspiring, dedicated Joe won the Phoenix Christian Invitational by trying to run the legs off a good, well coached Peoria five." Joe's commitment to his players and students was boundless.

The confidence and discipline he instilled was invaluable. He produced several All State players, and one Parade Magazine All American, Joel Querta, a Hualapai who averaged more than 30 points a game. More than a coach, Joe was a builder of men. Peterson Zah, former President of the Navajo Nation, Ivan Sidney, former Hopi Chairman, and Donald Antone, former Governor of the Gila River Indian Community are among the many he helped and inspired an era when prejudice was more prevalent and overt. When enrollment at Phoenix Indian School dropped before it was closed, Joe moved to the Salt River Day School where taught until he "retired" in his 1981.

Joe remained in high demand as a substitute until morning traffic finally persuaded him to stop in 1997 at the age of 75. Joe's enthusiasm for sports a and for people never waned. For him the saying was true, "He never met a stranger." At the apartment house where he and his wife, Patsy, had lived only parts of the last two years, one resident remarked, "The place won't be the same without Coach." The same may be said for the state of Arizona. Joe was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Pamela Cauthorne; his sisters, Mary DeMott and Helen Johnson; and his brothers, George and Frank Famulatte. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Famulatte; his son, Michael Jeronimo Famulatte; his stepson Matthew Lake; his grandson, Dwayne Cauthorne; his sisters, Rose M.

Harrington and Anna A. Howes; and by hundreds of students, athletes, and friends whose lives he made better.
