ifirxia lathj PACK MONDAY. MAY 9.1977 MEXIA. TEXAS The Consumer Alert by John L. Hill Attorney General AUSTIN-If you're one of the millions of women in Texas who are over the age of 18, you may have experienced difficulty in obtaining credit at one time or another in your life. Women who have been denied credit on the same men should be aware that u.i- federal Equal Credit Opportunity Act, passed several years ago, makes it unlawful for any creditor to discriminate against an applicant on the basis of sex or marital status.

But attorneys in our Consumer Protection Division and in our Insurance, Banking, and Securities Division, which represents the Texas Consumer Credit Commissioner, say that there still are women who are not aware of their new credit rights. And, while most credit grantors are aware of the fact that policies which tend to discriminate against women are illegal under the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, there still are instances of such discrimination occurring. Some women have been denied credit by stores, banks, savings and loan companies, other lending institutions, gas companies, and credit card companies even though credit may have been granted at these places to men of similar creditworthiness. Such credit discrimination should be reported to the Federal Trade Commission. Women who have experienced credit discrimination may also choose to sue the creditor for actual and punitive damages up to $10,000, with the aid of a private attorney.

The intent of the law is to see that women applying for credit will be judged, as male applicants are, on the basis of whether they have steady incomes and can qualify in other respects as good credit risks. Here are some of the specific provisions of the law: -You cannot be denied a separate credit account because of your sex or marital status, if you are otherwise creditworthy. -A creditor can ask you questions about your spouse only when your spouse will be using or will be liable for the account, or when you are relying on your spouse's income or property to obtain the credit -Child support, or separate maintenance payments must be considered as income to the extent that these payments are reliable. However, if you are not using such payments to help you qualify for credit, you don't have to list them as income. -If you are applying for credit with your husband, your regular income, whether full-time or part-time, must be counted.

-A creditor cannot ask you about birth control practices or childbearing plans, or assume that because of your age you may leave your jpbtp have a baby, causing your income to change. -A creditor may not use unfavorable information about an account you shared with a spouse or former spouse if you can show that the unfavorable history does not accurately reflect your willingness or ability to repay. -If you ask for it in writing within 30 days after denial of credit, the creditor must tell you the name of the credit bureau or other source which provided information used in evaluating your credit application. You then have the right to review your credit bureau file and have any inaccurate information corrected, or to add your version of a disputed credit history. For help with a consumer complaint, call the Attorney General's offices in Austin, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, El Paso, Lubbock.orMcAllen.

Can Without Countries The automobile business is taking on a distinctly international flavor, The Conference Board points out. One of the most popular small cars sold here, for instance, is designed in Detroit but its motor is made in Germany, its transmission in Great Britain and its electrical system in Canada. The suppliers of these components are all subsidiaries of the U.S. company.

Military Origin A margrave was the German title of the count (garf) in charge of a mark, or march, one of the large frontier military districts set up by Charlemagne and hij successors to protect the Prankish Empire. Of the six marches, two frontiers lent their names to modern nations the Danish march gave its name to Denmark and the east march of Bavaria, Ostmark, evolved into Osterrich and Austria. Liberty Hill (Texas, that is) honored for sculpture displays YOU REALLY WANT WEATHERWATCH RADA with ROY ACKLAttlD By GREG THOMPSON Associated Press Writer AUSTIN, Tex. (AP) Liberty Hill, the only tiny Texas hamlet with a town square full of sculpture, has been honored for its contributions to the arts in Texas.

The Central Texas town of 800 and the City of Dallas received Texas Arts Awards Wednesday night at the first Texas Arts Showcase at the University of Texas. The first ever presentation of the 11 awards for distinguished contributions highlighted the Showcase, which included performances by many Texas musicians, singers, actors and dancers. More than 500 persons from across the state, including several state officials, attended the ceremonies that completed the Texas Arts Alliance's annual meeting. "It's incredible that such a small town could win a prize like this over every other town under 100,000 in Texas," Texas Arts Alliance Chairman Steve Oaks of Houston said of the citation. "We were flabbergasted when we found out we had won," said Liberty Hill sculptor Mel Fowler, who received the award from Mrs.

Bill Hobby. "It's really terrific." Liberty Hill put on a two- month sculpture symposium last fall, attracting 25 sculptors from around the world. The town raised $125,000 in sculpture materials for the artists and citizens housed them in their homes. The artists donated their finished products. The result was several works that will soon fill a sculpture garden in the town.

They are in the town square now, said Fowler, who worked more than three years to organize the symposium. Dallas was honored for its "overall fine arts program," said Oaks. Lt. Gov. Bill Hobby presented the prize to councilman William Nicol.

The community awards are considered the most coveted. Margaret Batts Tobin of San Antonio and L.P. GUvin of A a i 11 won individual awards, while the media prizes went to the Wichita Falls Times and Record News and KMID-TV, Midland. The Houston National Bank, the Temple Independent School District, Angelo State University, the Junior League of Fort Worth and the Lufkin Service League also were honored. There were more than 200 nominations.

The diminutive, white-haired Mrs. Tobin was honored for her longtime promotion of the arts in the San Antonio area, while Gilvin, an Amarillo contractor, was significant in establishing the outdoor theater in Palo Duro Canyon. The alliance, a non-profit organization of about 5,000 private citizens dedicated to the growth of Texas arts, was formed in 1976 to assist the Obituaries On The Light Side Mrs. Fisher's funeral BOSTON (AP) There aren't many grins in the ho- hutn prose of an insurance policy, but insurance executives must gel some chuckles reading the claims from some clients.
