I OFFICIAL PAPER OF SEQUOYAH COUNTY County Democrat Vol XVI No J6 SALLISAW OKLA APBIL 22 1921 Star-Gazette Vol 27 No 15 i ik mniitiiiiffliiiiimBHiyiaiffiiiiiMiiiiiBigx MijiinjiiuiuaimEimmMUiniiiiracMJiiiiiiuiiiiL'ia WILLIAM MORRIS PERHAPS 1 FATALLY WOUNDED iMR SHUMATE RE-ELECTED SUPT OF CITY SCHOOLS CIRCUS MAKES HIT I WITH AUDIENCE The circus given Wednesday at high school building was a great success and the large auditorium was packed to its capacity with hundreds of Sallfc saw circus fans This circus was far different from other although like any other circus it made only a one night stand in our city At the regular monthly meeting of the board of education of this city held on the 4th of the month Mr Wade Shumate was reelected superin- tendent of the city schools by imous action of the board -Mr mate has served only one year in this capacity coming to the superinten- dency of our schools from the Northeastern State Normal at Tahlequah where' he held the position of Director of Training school and head of the De-1 who attend school at the high school it came and went but the promoters of this circus reached their objective financially and now the little fellows In a drunken brawl which occurred last Sunday evening about 7:30 Joe Honeycut shot and perhaps fatally wounded his brother-in-law' William Morris at Honeycut a home two and a half miles north of Marble City Morris was shot at very close range with a 38 calibre Colt pistol the bullet striking him just above the left collar bone and coming out just below the right shoulder blade He is completely paralyzed although conscious -Immediately after the shooting Honeycutxede into Marble City and gave himself up to Town Marshall Charley Teel who promptly notified the office Sheriff Gay left for the scene at once and fortunately caught the northbound passenger train and arrived on the scene of the shooting 50 minutes after the shot was fired Honeycut was brought to this city and placed in the county jail 4 Sheriff Gay made a thorough invest tigation about the Honeycutt premise! DIMES HAKE DOLLARS I THe Sallisaw High school recently purchased a Vic trola and found it necessary 1o evolve a plan to raise fuAds with which to pay for same Times were hard aid but few people would purchase high priced tickets in' support of an entertainment Shumate' and his able faculty worked out a low priced entertainment In which everybody could and would show an interest and patronize The sue cess of thecircurand enteratinment is best recognized in the fact that the auditorium was filled to overflowing and the public secured a splendid evening of entertainment for the small sum of 5 and 10c and the'Victrola is paid for In like manner can the students and the pubjic general ly start and build a bank account Small sums saved and deposited will some day create and account worthy of notice and pride This hank invites new accounts no matter how small and will extend every courtesy consistent with good (Lit sound banking" BETTER SUNDAY SCHOOLS FOR SEQUOYAH COUNTY A county wide Sunday School convention will be held at Vian on Monday May 2nd with representatives from all Sunday schools in the county present The convention is held each year to promote the interest in Sunday school work in the county and to exchange ideas and method): used by those interested and active in this work Prominent state an4 county Sunday school workers will address the convention-and a most entertaining and instructive meeting is in store for those who attend The sessions will be held in the First Baptist church in the morning at 10 afternoon at 2 and the evening session- beginning at 7:30 Everyone is invited and every Sunday school in Sequoyah county should be represented The following program has been arv ranged for the convention: MORNING Song services led by Mr Saxon Scripture fire in self-defense and Morris had him cornered Every effort has been made by Van Scruggs of the county office to secure a statement from Morris who absolutely refuses to talk regarding the shooting preliminary trial has not been set but he will appear before Justice of Peace Cochren of Marble City tp either face a charge of murder or assault with attempt to kill tion during the ensuing scholastic year The board of education has also elected a number of teachers in high school and grades for the coming year and will complete the selection of teachers at an early date 0 WHAT DQ YOU Of captured a 66 gallon still in Operation and the moonshiners Robert Colston and Luther Hendrick son botlh young men who live near Marble City were arrested by the raiding party The still was located in the canyons of Dry creek under a big bluff and it took the officers some time in their efforts to reach the still More than 30 gallons of mash was destroyed and the moonshiners had made ten gallons of already for the market at the time of their arrest The worm ws brought to Sallisaw with other evidence by Sheriff Gay Colston and Hendrickson waived preliminary hearing before Breedlove Commissioner and their bond was placed at (100000 each which they made Our school has arranged for an exhibit of more than 200 Spia and hand colored colonial prints art treasures from many lands This exhibit is for purpose of purchasing pictures for our school rooms The exhibit will be held during Monday and Tuesday A small fee of 15 cents will be'charged partment of Education for a term of 7 years 1 Friday in the interest of securing federal aid for bridge building in Sequoyah county in proportion to the amount due the county by reason of the recently approved bond issue voted for bridge building in the county 0 Mrs Bently Romans who has been in Ashville for past eight months returned home last Friday building can enjoy the grapophom music with the high school students and faculty and the Liberty school can have their victrola they recently w-n in a contest between the high school and the Liberty school The wild west show as usual at-1 traded its share of the throng and it went over with wonderful success The vaudeville with its entertainers enjoyed a share in making the circus a success Mother Goose rhymes were enjoyed by all Virginia Reel made an unusual hit but of all the Foty Graf album was best This scene took the spectator -way back in the olden duys and the make up from our prominent citizens were far above expectation We will mention only a few of the many that made jt hit with the audience Jack Mayo performed as well as an experienced actor and he received an unusual amount of applause and the audience tried to get Mr Mayo back Upon the stage put they were unsuccessful Armstrong Gordon and Breedlove dressed as triplets were very good Perry Wheeler and Fred Campbell were dis-'tingilished southerners and a mighty ajtplause greeted them Mayor Kobel enjoyed his share of the applause when he appeared with his long black mustache Moore Earl Ivey Ray Weems John Pope and Roy Frye also won applause Mesdames Shumate Blackard rye anj Armstrong proved themselves to be very popular but the prize winners were the world Beasley and Miss Nina Ivey who were given the prize of the evening by the judges Mr Beasley was seated dressed in a long frock tail coat with a large pair of boots holding little Patsy Lee Ivey on his knee while Miss Ivey was standing by his side dressed in an old fashioned dress of the style worn during the civil war They were greated with hearty applause until the huge auditorium rocked like a cradle This circus did not have any elephants but theywere well stocked with clowns and they acted just like and even better than most professional clowns that follow the circus trains They did not have a band but an orchestra furnished'-the music during the entire evening composed of Mrs McCombs Tom Delaney Sten-son Anderson Robert Wall and McCombs The circus was a success and it pleased the audience We hope tftey will see fit to pay Sallisaw another visit before the curtain falls announcing the close of 1920-21 school year 0 Miss Nell Lucas who is attending the business college in Van Buren spent the week end with her parents Mr and Mrs Lucas 0 Dr Sosbee of Gore was in the city Friday looking after the interests of the yrest end of the county in the matter of recent issue of bridge bonds jg THE OLDEST AND STRONGEST ffilHiNQ NEW HOSE FOR OUR FIRE DEPARTMENT I ft Morris is about 42 years of age and has a wife and one child GENERAL MANAGER INSPECTS COMPRESS sf Taylor of Memphis Tenn general manage rof all compress plants of the Granada Compress company part owners of the local plant and the largest compress operators of the south Was in this city during the week inspecting the Condition of the local property the Sallisaw Compress com? pany Accompanied by Mr A Rogers local manager for the company Mr Taylor made a tour of the offices of local cotton men and acquainted himself with conditions pertaining to the cotton industry in this county and state He was pleased with the results obtained here and the prospects for future enlargement of the plant in this city 0 McDonald and Rev A McDonald of this city attended' the funeral of their uncle Logan at Poteau Thursday Mr Logan was 84 years old at the time of his death and had lived in or near Poteau for the past 45 years' He was a devout chris-tian and had been an elder in the Presbyterian church for the past 52 years He was a man of even temper char-table and affectionate to his family and friends and his death was a fitting setting of a long and useful life i city administration has received 500 feet of new heavy reenforced fire hose for the city fire department The purchase was made from the Eureka Fire Home Mfg company and represents an expenditure of about (66000 The fire department now has nearly 2000 feet of serviceable hosei although some of it has-been in use for a number of years and is liable to go out at any time Even this amount is insufficient for the ifeeds of the department as the fire plugs are quite a distance apart in some sections requiring in some instances all of the hose avail able to lay one line to the fire The ity fire department is better ped than ever before but still needs further equipping to bring it up' to the requirements of this city James Logan McDonald will leave Saturday evening for Holdepville' Oklahoma where he will visit his sister Mrs Huggins over Sunday en-route to McAlester to receive the consistory degree of Scottish Rite Mason of Southern Jurisdiction Mr McDonald will return hme next Friday and launch his active campaign for the Shrine Ring which will be given to the successful candidate at Okmulgee next month There is to be a contest between two oij the Literary Societies soon which we hope to make an annual affair In order to stimulate interest in this kind of school work we are calling upon the public to see who would like to furnish a Silver Loving cup to be presented to the society winning The cup will be known as the Loving cup the blank to be filled in by the name of the individual or firm that first offers to supply the cup The cup is to become the permanent property of the society that wins it three years in succession Who is willing to offer the
