The five-time world champion and seven-time U.S. national champion could have spent Thursday morning perfecting her choreography for her new program. She could have begun preparations to resume school at UCLA.

Or, she could have stayed home in Torrance, reflecting upon the three gold medals she has won this year alone. Instead, Kwan chose to share her tricks of the trade with about 50 aspiring skaters at the Alltel Ice Den as part of the Phoenix Coyotes' High Performance Figure Skating Academy all-star week festivities. "I'm only here for half a day, so it's not like I can make magic," said Kwan, who provided campers with' three hours of instruction and autographs before leaving to catch a plane to New York. Due to the large number of kids in the program, Kwan spent only 15 minutes with each group of six skaters. She stressed the basics, while emphasizing principles they've learned from their coaches.

Kwan devoted much of her time toward teaching gliding motions and the proper form for double axels. She also flashed her notorious "falling leaf," a complex move in which she jumps and does the splits in midair. "Her spirit on the ice and the way she captures the audience makes her a role model," said Tucson Catalina Foothills High School freshman Kim Stevenson, one of dozens of kids spending the summer in Scottsdale and learning how to become better skaters. "It was kind of unreal because we were talking to her and she was talking to us." Special to the Scottsdale Republic If shade is what you're after this summer, flat, tree-lined and traditional Camelback Golf Club is a good choice. One of the Northeast first parkland-style golf courses, the first 18 holes (Padre) opened in 1972. Indian Bend, a Jack Snyder design, opened in 1978. Everything changed in 2000 when a new clubhouse and an Arthur Hills-designed Resort Course (formerly the Padre) were unveiled. Hills made the course more interesting and playable with its square tees, deep bunkers and numerous water hazards.

Indian Bend basically stayed the same, but it's now called the Club Course. WHERE: 7847 N. Mockingbird Lane, Paradise Valley. COURSE DESIGNER: Arthur Hills (Resort Course), Jack Snyder (Club Course). DIRECTOR OF GOLF: Tom Gray.

Figure Skating Championships ('96, '98, '99, '00, '01, '02, '03). looked as graceful as she did last spring when she claimed top honors at the ABC Sports International Figure Skating Classic in Bridgeport, Conn. Kwan even wore her lucky necklace that bears a gold me- dallion given to her by her grandmother a few years before she started skating competitively. "She looks a lot bigger on TV," Desert Mountain sophomore Helen Thomas said. "But the way she presented herself was really championlike." Being able to skate for pure enjoyment again came as a relief for Kwan, who still is debating whether she'll compete in the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Italy.

She fell short during her two previous trips to the Olympics, earning the silver medal in 1998 and the bronze last year. "Just taking it one day at a time is important," Kwan said. "I'm going to take it easy, get my program squared off and then see what competitions I want to The rare private appearance brought back memories of when Kwan perfected her skills on the ice as a teenager in Lake Arrowhead, Calif. More than a decade after placing sixth at her first national competition in Phoenix, she has more gold medals than she knows what to do with, to go along with more fans than she could possibly count. "It's inspiring to work with them because you see the sparkle," Kwan said.

"I see them like a new toy." Got a story? Let us know Got an idea for a sports or recreation story in the Scottsdale area?
