Jake Gau-treau's leadoff homer sparked a four-run sixth inning, and Tulane held on to beat Nebraska in an elimination game trips Fullerton in 10 2nd straight win puts No. 24 on top Associated Press BROOKLYN, Mich. If there were any doubts that Jeff Gordon is back to championship form, he answered them Sunday with a milestone victory. Gordon survived a bad final pit stop that forced him to slice his way through the field, a pair of restarts and a tense battle with Kicky Rudd over the final two laps to win the Kmart 400 at Michigan International Speedway and give Hendrick Motorsports its 100th victory.

"That's a true mark of a championship-caliber team to be able to stay calm, regroup and come back in," Gordon said. "That's what we did and that's why this team is so good." Gordon, coming off two straight disappointing seasons, won for the second consecutive week and the 55th time in his career, and took the points lead by 26 over Dale Jar-rett. And it put Rick Hendrick into the record book as just the third car owner with 100 victories. Petty Enterprises has 271 and Junior Johnson 139. But Hendrick couldn't be at the track to celebrate the win.

His father, "Papa" Joe Hendrick, is scheduled to have heart surgery today. So Hendrick remained in North Carolina to be with him. The three Hendrick cars, including Terry Labonte and Jerry Nadeau, donned stickers on their Chevrolets that said, "Get Well Pop." Gordon was off to another dominating performance he led 137 of the first 174 laps when an error on the final pit stop cost him the lead. He led Rudd and Sterling Marlin into the pits on Lap 175 but came out sandwiched between them. That's when his crew radioed him to come back in because the lug nuts were loose.

Rudd, who had his own tire problems, followed him in and, after a second stop, the two went back on the track in 10th and 11th place with Marlin as the leader. But they zigzagged their way through the field and were right behind Marlin when a caution came out on Lap 189. "I made some pretty incredible moves to get by some cars," Gordon said. "I only know one way, and that's to go for it. When you've got a good car, you've got to put it on the edge." It returned to green-flag racing with seven laps left, and Gordon got a tremendous jump on the restart.

He passed Marlin in Turn 1, taking Rudd with him. "We had a good car on the long runs, but he could beat us on the get-go," Marlin said. Moments later, Shawna Robinson, the first woman in a Winston Cup race in 12 years, brought out the seventh caution flag of the race with a spin in Turn 2. After two laps under caution, NASCAR returned the field to green with four laps left. That's when Gordon and Rudd began their stirring duel.

Rudd looked to make a pass several times, then made his move coming out of Turn 4 with one lap to go. His Ford Taurus went high on the track and looked past Gordon, then changed direction by sliding low and passing Gordon's Chevrolet on the inside. Gordon wasted no time in retaking the lead, sweeping up high on the track in Turn 1 to pass Rudd. He then drifted down the track to block Rudd from making another move and held him off around the track and at the finish line by 0.085 seconds. Associated Press in Indianapolis, Kansas City and Atlanta.

Robinson made the field at Michigan International Speedway after failing in her two previous attempts this year. "Believe me, every time I sit in that race car I'll get better," she said. The Des Moines, Iowa, native plans a full schedule in 2002. Robinson said Sunday was a "learning experience" for her inside her Ford Taurus. Robinson would rather be considered just a driver not a woman driver but she said, "You're always being focused on in this situation." That was true even before the race, when she was included in the invocation as Lonnie Klaus prayed "for every man and Shawna." The splashes of pink on her car, which was her sponsor's idea, also provided a reminder during the race.

Robinson became the 15th woman to compete in a Winston Cup event. Patty Moise was the last to do so, at Talladega Superspeedway in 1989. Moise was also the last woman to finish a Cup race, at Watkins Glen International in 1988. AUTO SCOREBOARD Kmart 400 AT BROOKLYN, MICH. Associated Press BROOKLYN, Mich. They thought she wouldn't make it. Once she did, they thought she couldn't finish. Shawna Robinson proved them wrong. The 36-year-old mother of two became the first woman to compete in a Winston Cup event in 12 years.

Then she became the first woman to finish a race since 1988. "You have to understand, what every single driver out there expected me to do was probably crash or get in the way," Robinson said. "I think I did neither of those things, so my goal was accomplished." Robinson started 32nd and finished 34th Sunday in the Kmart 400 three laps behind race winner Jeff Gordon. "I think it's significant," NASCAR President Mike Helton said. "I think every step she makes is important.

First, she had to make it, then she had to finish. Now that she's done those things, she can focus on improving her position." Robinson will attempt to qualify for her next Winston Cup event in Chicago on July 13. She also plans to race Younger bro Schumacher wins Montreal Associated Press MONTREAL Ralf Schumacher outdrove his older, more famous brother, Michael, on Sunday, pulling away to an easy victory in the Canadian Grand Prix. The German siblings started side by side on the front row and pole winner Michael led from the start on the 2.747-mile Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Ralf never let him get too far away, though, stalking the leader until he made his pit stop on the 46th of 69 laps.

As Michael, the defending Formula One champion, drove his Ferrari into the pits, Ralf 's Williams BMW flashed past into the lead. He stayed out front the rest of the way, building a big enough edge before his pit stop on Lap 51 to retain the lead. After the younger brother emerged from the pits in front, he pulled steadily away, unchallenged until he cross the finish line 20.2 seconds more than the front straightaway ahead. It was his second victory, with the first last year in San Marino. Michael Schumacher added a third runner-up finish to four victories here.
