Northern Ave. Glendale AZ Sat Dec 20, at 2pm. Born November 1932 in Grand Island Nebraska. Alan spent many years in Denver Colorado before finding his home in Phoenix. Alan was an artist that sold his fine art internationally and locally.

Alan's artwork has been displayed in many art museums across the the country. His works are in permanent display of the Museum of Nebraska Artists. Alan had many awards for this artwork and is listed in the Outstanding Artists and Designers of the 20th Century. Alan's major contribution was his optimistic creative soul that infected all who came in contact with him. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 51 years, Alice, his children, Mike, Bryce and Deena, brother Al and sister Lois.

He was preceded in death by his two sisters Marsha, and Jodi. He had 5 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to ESPERANCA Inc. International Health Project. 1911 W.

Earli Dr. Phoenix AZ. 85009. John Astopenia passed away Thursday, December 11, 2003 at the age of 83. Preceded in death by his devoted wife of 58 years Helen Pipski Astopenia, he is survived by sisterin-law Marge Astopenia of Stevensville, MI, two brothersin-law and their wives and thirteen nieces and nephews.

He was born Benton Harbor, MI, served in the Army Air Corps during WW and worked for 30 years with Detroit Department of Transportation. John was at home in the forests and streams of Rose City, MI or the mountains and deserts of Yuma, AZ, and he will forever be at home in our hearts. A memorial mass will be held Tuesday, December 23, 2003 at 2:00 p.m., Messinger's Mortuary, 7601 E. Indian School, Scottsdale, AZ. Military burial will follow at St.

Francis Cemetery, 2033 N. 48th Phoenix, AZ. OBITUARIES Harriett DeView, a retired teacher and Sun City resident, died 11, 2003. Harriett Spears Dean was born at Ashton, Michigan February 17, 1915 to Myrtle Spears Dean and Harry van Ess Dean. She graduated from Flint County Normal in the 1930s and taught until her marriage in 1936.

She resumed teaching in the 1960s studies at Montieth College, Wayne State University, earning a bachelor's degree, then a master's degree in education from University of Michigan. She spent summers pursuing continuing education courses which took her to Europe and Africa. Her favorite stints were at the University of Dar es Salaam. Harriett was active in the Civil Rights Movement and advocated political action throughout her life. Harriett DeView was an excellent musician, continuing inter musical education well mid-life.

Mrs. DeView retired from teaching in the early 1980s, moving to Arizona where she was active as a Scottish country dancer. She was a Humanmember of the Universalisto Unitarian Church. Harriett married James C. Moran in the 1930s and Harden DeView in the 1960s, both preceding her in death.

She is mourned by her daughters Ann Campbell, Patricia Cook, and Kathleen Linn (Burghard). Son Robert C. Moran (Vicki) died this year. Harriett will be sadly missed by her beloved grandchildren, Jennifer Cook (Tom), Ronald Cook (Susan), Damian Linn, Marisa Linn(Jason), Jesse Moran, Molly Campbell (Fred), Joseph Campbell (Janet), Ward Marquette (Heather). Granddaughter Vanessa Campbell preceded Harriett in death.

Helen Dignity City was born March 3, 1908 in Lake Mills, WI to Gustav and Ida Helle. After three years of training, Helen became a Registered Nurse. She moved to Arizona thirty-three years ago from WI. Helen is survived by her daughters Ann Schroeder and Lorraine McCauley; sons. Thomas Bretzmann and Joel Bretzmann; her sister Mildred Wing; fourteen grandchildren, thirty grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

She was born in Trowbridge, England on December 23, 1923 and came to the United States in 1954. She was married in Montana, moved to Denver, Colorado where she raised two daughters. She became a citizen of the United States in 1966. She enjoyed traveling, sitting. poolside and being with friends.

She is survived by her daughters; Barb Welch (Paul) of Omaha, NE and Jacki Houchens (Terry) of Gilbert, AZ. She is also survived by three grandsons; Jon Eric Olofson (Adriana), Jeffrey Olofson (Raquel) and Brian Houchens. Just prior to her passing she was blessed with a great granddaughter; Danielle, the daughter of Jon Eric and Adriana. Vernon Johnson, 88, of Glendale, AZ, Passed away on December 17, 2003. He was born on July 4, 1915 in Malung, Minnesota. He served in the US Navy in WWII after which he lived most of his life in the Minneapolis area where he was employed as an electrician for the University Of Minnesota Hospital. After retirement in the mid 1970's he and his wife spent their winters in Arizona. Making Glendale their permanent home in the early 1990's.

Vernon is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Martha Johnson, Sister, Elsie Pearson of Phoenix; brother, Orlen Johnson of Roseau, MN and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, December 21, 2003 with Visitation from 1:00 to 2:00 PM at Phoenix Memorial Park Mortuary, 200 W. Beardsley Road, Phoenix. Karnell, age of Phoenix, passed away December 19, 2003. He was a veteran who served in the U. S. Navy during ww Il. He will be dearly missed. by his mother, Rose Koelpin, brothers, Bruce and Daniel Koelpin and sister Patricia Evert (nee Koelpin). Our David "Rocky" was passionate about his musical pursuits. "Rocky Koelpin and The Otters" and "Generic Beans" appeared at clubs, on radio WMSE 91.7 and Milwaukee's Summerfest Rock Stage. Milwaukee Journal reviewer, Paul Christianson (www.rockykoelpin.com) said, "you either loved him or hated He had a brief career as a travel agent at Falls Travel Service and Milwaukee's Downtown Boston Store travel.

His meticulous attention to detail and electronics expertise resulted employment in The Strategic Sensors Systems Corporation; "my dream A description of his achievements at Honeywell Corp. leave his technologically challenged family unable to detail when asked what he did, he would reply, "I'm a genius!" We will miss our beloved eccentric, guitar playing, undiscovered genius. David will also be fondly remembered by nieces Christine and Cheri as well as former brothers-in-law Darrell Evert and Henry McElvery. A legacy of memories for all who knew him. MariCarmen Paz, of Mesa, AZ, age 67, passed away December 12, 2003 at Hospice of Dayton (OH). She is survived by son Jorge Paz of New Hampshire; 3 daughters: Eca Paz Taylor (Richard Taylor) of Solon, OH, Gisela Paz (Uwe Krohn) WA, Pamela Bayer (Michael)' of Dayton, OH, and 4 granddaughters: Mallory, Camille, Katherine and Madeline. She is also survived by a large family in Spain and many wonderful friends. MariCarmen was from Madrid, Spain. MariCarmen had lived in Chile, Florida, Arizona, Washington, Massachusetts, and Ohio.

She retired from Motorola and had traveled extensively throughout the US and Europe fro the past five years. She will be missed. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Henry Arthur "Art" McCabe died December 15, at age 72. A native of Brooklyn, he was Chief Lifeguard at Coney Island while attending St. John's University. After graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics he served in the Army at Fort Huachuca. Art returned to Arizona in 1961 to continue a 30-year career as a Software Development Manager in the Computer Department of General In the late 1970's he transferred to the company's headquarters in Minneapolis where he also taught at the University of Minnesota and the University St.

Thomas. In addition to mentoring, Art enjoyed following politics and sports, especially baseball, and perusing the New York Times trying to complete the crossword, puzzle faster than is survived by his wife Mary Williamson McCabe who was also in Software Development at His surviving children are Patrick, Anne Nepsky (Craig), Kevin (Penny), Cathleen Keeney (Joseph) and John (Charlotte). He was preceded in death by his son Michael. His pride and joy were his grandchildren: Nathan and Patrick Nepsky; Kenny, Sarah, Eleanor and Charlotte Miles, Anne and Clare Keeney. John was the son D. and Blanche McCauley and is also survived by brothers Harold, Don, Pat, and Tom, as well as a sister, Eleanor. John was born in North Vernon, Indiana, living there until joining the Air Force during World War II. After being discharged in Idaho, he attended the university there, earning a degree in education. In 1954 he moved his young family to Arizona where he began a teaching career that spanned almost 40 years, and resulted in lasting friendships with many students.

He also served two terms as mayor of the City of Avondale. In 1970 he joined the Navel Reserve, remaining until 1983, resulting in a lifetime total of 20 years of service. He enjoyed a variety of interests and activities, including desert walks, dogs, good food, good books, home improvement, yard sales, people in general, and traveling with his wife in their RV, having crossed the country numerous times. 17, 2003 Mendenhall, 68, Wednesday, peacefully in her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Ridgeview, WV, a coal miner's daughter. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, daughters Earl: Kim and her Dignity husband Harry; DeAnn and husband Phil; son Steve and wife Terri and eight grandchildren. She leaves behind her mother, four sisters, a brother, many nieces nephews, as well as many loving inlaws. Her battle with cancer began six years ago.

She faced many challenges with much grace and brevity. She was caring and loving in all the roles she played in life. We know she is at peace with her Lord; our loss is heaven's gain.
