SPORTS SATURDAY, MAY 31, 2003 C17 The Arizona Republic KAZ-TV expands coverage of Cards, Mercury Valley in running for lacrosse team will be carried on the Dish Network satellite service. "We're really trying," said Ron Bergamo, the station's general manager. "We think there are great opportunities in the sports franchise area. We are delighted to have the Cards and Mercury, and the UA, ASU and Northern Arizona packages are going well." Last year in a partnership live coverage of road games and next-night, prime-time showings of home games. The TV magazine show Maximum Cardinals will air from 6:30 to 7 p.m.

Saturdays, from Aug. 2 to Dec. 27. Six Mercury games remain on the schedule. In a week, the Channel 27 signal will increase fivefold.

By mid-June, the station deal, KAZ picked up a number of overflow events that Fox Sports Arizona couldn't handle. That could mushroom in the fall when Fox Sports Arizona begins broadcasting Suns home games. That likely will create conflicts with the Coyotes, Diamondbacks and college events. "We are delighted to carry the conflicts," Bergamo said. The Arizona Republic KAZ-TV has taken another step in its development as a sports outlet for Arizona.

Here are the key changes for the Phoenix-Prescott station, which is broadcast on Channel 27 (Channel 13 on Cox Communications): It will carry the four Cardinals preseason games, with Tucson also gets look for expansion Recommended for Ages 16 over only HONDA BEST ON EARTH '4 i 3 II -turn1 V-WSk Sf $4799 $7099 The 13-week regular season runs from late May through mid-August. An all-star game precedes two postseason semifinal games and the championship match, which will be broadcast for the first time this year on ESPN2. The league is planned so that it doesn't have to compete with the NHL, NBA or NFL. It ends shortly before the start of college football season, meaning that its primary competition comes from Major League Baseball and the WNBA. "What we.

have that separates us from any other startup league is the product," Steinfeld said. "American sports fans love hitting, scoring and speed, and this game has it all." Investors would have to raise $1.5 million to start a franchise in Phoenix, Steinfeld said. Other possible markets include Austin, Denver, San Diego, Los Angeles, San FranciscoSan Jose, Sacramento, Seattle and Portland. Lacrosse isn't played at the high school or collegiate level in Arizona, although a few high schools have club teams. The sport has developed a following among youths, many of whom came to ASU this week for the 11th annual Crease Ranch lacrosse camp, a five-day clinic taught by high school and college coaches.

"You use a lot of the things you use in football," said camper Hahn Franklin-Mitchell, an eighth-grader from Dallas. "It helps with cutting, speed and agility. That's why a lot of kids play it." By Brian Gomez The Arizona Rep The founder of the nation's premier uuiuou lacrosse league said a franchise could be coming to Arizona within two years. As part of a recently announced expansion plan focusing primarily on the West Coast, Major League Lacrosse founder Jake Steinfeld is considering Phoenix and Tucson as the site for one of six new teams that will begin play in 2005. Steinfeld is undergoing preliminary discussions with potential investors.

He said Valley sports fans would enjoy lacrosse, even in a market that includes several pro teams and a major university. "Arizona is absolutely on my list for putting a team there," said Steinfeld, whose league was formed in 2001. "People are really going to embrace this, especially with the right professional sports operator who knows how to market in the community." Major League Lacrosse has six teams each of which functions with a $190,000 salary cap for 18 players in East Coast cities, including Baltimore and Boston. Most teams play at municipal stadiums and minor league baseball parks, but some teams, such the Rochester (N.Y.) Rattlers, are housed at high school fields. As she approached the first tee, the world of golf's knees weakened.

As she walked off that tee, I believe, so did the spirit of American sports fans who hooted and cheered a true champion attempting to overcome insurmountable odds. I thank Annika. I thank her for the 36 holes. I thank her for the history. I thank her for the fleeting, brief glimpse of quality entertainment in sports.

Tartabull rented Amandi's home in September 2001 with a two-year lease for $16,000 a month and paid two months' rent, the newspaper said. After Amandi evicted Tartabull in May 2002, a court ordered the former baseball star to pay $320,000 in late fees and charges, the newspaper said.

Tartabull could not be reached for comment. There is not a listed number for him in the area and Jeff Boris, an agent who represented him as a player, said he has not had any contact with Tartabull in several years. Associated Press WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. Former baseball star Danny Tartabull has been evicted from two Florida homes and sued for more than $300,000 in back rent and penalties, the Palm Beach Post reported. Tartabull, who a decade ago signed a $25.5 million, five-year contract, was evicted from the homes in southern Palm Beach County in just over a year, the newspaper reported in today's editions.

Boca Raton homeowner Thomas Nader filed a suit in April contending Tartabull owed $28,170 in rent and late charges since signing a lease in September.
