v'rV i 1 14G TODAY, Wednesday, April 30. IKS Tall Towers Awaited To Help the Picture' By MARGOT REISEL BARA TODAY Television Editor As any television viewer will tell you, TV reception in Brevard is a fickle and frequently frustrating thing. Brevardians receive, with an ordinary rooftop antenna, three Orlando based television ation: one affiliated with each of the three major networks. The distance the signal has to travel between Orlando and Brevard is the reason your TV screen sometimes goes into spasms of snow and wobbly pictures. South Brevard is plagued the most with spastic reception since that area is located farthest from the signals' point of origin.

The Orlando ABC TV affiliate is WFTV (Channel 9) and WDBO T' (Channel 6) carries CBS programming. The NBC station WESH TV (Chainel 2) is a combined Orlando Daytona operation wit'i studios in both cities and a transmitting tower located midway between the two in Orange City. A giant new transmitting tower which will carry both WDBO and WFTV's signals is under construction closer to Brevard, but at this time only a fraction of the 1,500 foot tower is completed. WESH TV also has plans to build a new tower some 10 miles south of the existing one, which should also help Brevard's reception. The fluctuating signals in the have given rise to three separate cable systems within the county which, in addition to boosting the signals from the Orlando stations, nipe in three other network channels from around the state, plus two educational stations.

The cable companies offer viewers a choice of two additional NBC affiliates WPTV (Channel 5) 'ocatcd in Palm Beach, and WFLA TV, (Channel 8) the Tampa NBC 'rt'oii. The cables carry a second H3S station. WTVT (Channel 13) also located in Tampa. The educational stations are 'VEDU (Channel 3) from Tampa and Channel 24, an Orlando UHF station that broadcasts only during the daytime. The Monday through Fri f'ny station goes off the air during the Eummer months.

In addition, all the county's cable systems carry a time weather news closed circuit channel with FM music background. Just Turn Dial, And Turn, and Turn and For an area the size of Brevard, the county is inundated with radio stations. Eight AM stations and five FM stations' compete for the listener's ear and the advertising dollar. WRMF AM and FM is Titusville's only station, with a contemporary format. Central Brevard, with the bulk of the population, also has the largest number of radio stations four AM and three FM.

WEZY AM and FM plays contemporary music. WRKT, an NBC affilliate, features a vavvx tMr wXM Xl ill 'llM mixed format and WKKO specializes in hard rock (top 40) for the younger set. WWBC plays country and western music exclusively. In addition to WEZY FM, Central Brevard's other two FM stations are WCKS and WKPE a sister station to WRKT AM. Two Tennis Tournaments Did you know the Titusville Tennis Club has two tournaments each year, singles in May and doubles in October.

South Brevard's three AM radio stations and one FM station offer the same variety of music as the Central Brevard stations. WMEG and WMMB play contemporary music with a sprinkling of pops and WMEG switches to the top forty sound in the evening hours. WTAI, like WKKO, spins hard rock mrsic and both stations go off the air at sun 1 down. Melbourne's station, f4 WCKS, features country and western music. Six newspapers, two of them published out of the county, keep residents informed of happenings at home and abroad. TODAY is foremost of Cape Kennedy's newspapers.

Combined circulation of the two papers is around 19,000 with less than 5,000 of that figure attributed to the evening paper. The Brevard Sentinel maintains offices in Cocoa on Forrest Avenue, but the actual printing of the paper is done in Orlando.

The Knight owned Miami Herald also publishes a Brevard edition, which includes a local page, with a weekday circulation of less than 5,000. The Titusville Star Advocate is located in the county seat and serves North Brevard with a Monday through Friday evening paper which has a circulation of 7,200 daily. The Advocate traces its history back to the 1800 when Titusville was ths county's most heavily populated area. The Evening i (formerly the Cocoa Tribune) is also a Monday through Friday paper, serving the Central Brevard area, with a circulation of slightly less than 5,000.

The Tribune's history dates to 1917; it is published at the Gannett Forest Avenue plant. The baby of Gannett Florida is the countywide, seven morning daily, TODAY. Created on March 21, 1966, "Florida's Space Age Newspaper," caused a stir in journalism circles and became an immediate favorite with Cape Kennedy residents. Its circulation soared from zero to more 30,000 within the first month of publication and, in March of 1969. TODAY broke the 50,000 barrier in Brevard.

Paid Sunday sales top 52,000. Its bright format also has been well received within the industry end, and its short three year history, TODAY has been honored with more than two dozen, national, state and regional awards.
