"But I think( too, we have killed and hurt, thousands of people, and I re-', ally believe that we will feel the consequences." Reach the reporter at Joseph Eppinger said he agreed with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak who said earlier this week that anti-American reaction to the fighting in Iraq could spawn hundreds of Osama bin Ladens.

"War is an obsolete way to settle international differ ences," he said. Eppinger is executive director of the Arizona Interfaith Movement, but stressed he was expressing only his personal opinions. And even those, he admitted, were conflicted. "One part of me says, 'Oh, great, it's over. The Arizona Alliance for Peaceful Justice was organized in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks to encourage greater emphasis on humanitarian, diplomatic and thoughtful approaches to dealing with terrorism and oppression. "You have to have a voice out there that says we need to look at this for the long term," Coffeen said. "What are we going to be doing 20 or 30 years from now? Are we going to be trying to work with the world community to build respect for American values in a thoughtful, caring way, or are we going to look for military solutions to complex issues?" Kyrsten Sinema, 26, another social justice activist in the Valley, said she's happy that Saddam is no longer in power, but still doesn't believe war was the best way to accomplish that.

Concern now, she said, has shifted to helping Iraqi citizens. "There's a lot of concern now about civilians and inno cent people who have died or are now living without electricity, water or adequate food," said Sinema, who has a master's degree in social work and is in law school. Sinema said that since the fighting began three weeks ago, she has noticed a significant drop in the number of war protesters in the Valley. But she said she is neither surprised nor discouraged. "I'm an activist and a progressive activist.

I'm used to losing," she said. "It's the nature of the movement. "I would love to see 3,000 to 5,000 people at all the events, but I'm realistic. Many people who felt they didn't want to see us enter the war felt that once it started there was nothing they could do." The Rev. Paul Eppinger, an American Baptist minister, said the military action in Iraq was the equivalent of using a "sledgehammer against a BB." And he said he feared the long-term consequences.

"I think this is just the first round," said Eppinger, 69. "My fear is that we are going to see tragic repercussions." By Joseph A. Reaves The Arizona Republic The sight of Saddam Hussein's statues tumbling in cities and villages throughout Iraq was enough to cheer the heart of even the most impassioned anti-war activist. "Who can't help but be excited about that?" said Tom Coffeen, 34, a member of the Arizona Alliance for Peaceful Justice. "It's just like that guy in front of the tank in Tiananmen Square or watching (Romanian dictator Nicolae) Ceaucescu get the boot.

It's terrific." Coffeen, a network engineer from Phoenix, was one of several prominent Valley peace activists who've been caught in a contradiction: they oppose the war, but applaud the collapse of Saddam's regime. They hail the courage of U.S. and British troops, but continue to question the reasonableness of war. "The fundamental problem still exists, however. The question is whether we will continue to apply military solutions to complex world prob INCLUDES VALUABLE PARTIAL COLLECTION OF RENOWNED DOCTOR SURGEON DUE TO DIVORCE LIQUIDATING ANTIQUES, HOME FURNISHINGS, FINE OBJECTS OF ART GRADUALLY UNTIL VILLA IS SOLD.

The survey also found that President Bush's overall job approval rating continues to rise in step with the upbeat news from the front. Three in four Americans now approve of the job Bush is doing as president, his best rating since June. Eight in 10 support Bush's decision to go to war, and nearly two-thirds say the war is going "very well" for the United States, up 19 percentage points in less than a week.

Even as Baghdad residents danced in the streets to celebrate the liberation of their city, three in four Americans said the war was not yet over and predicted that troops loyal to Iraqi President Saddam Hussein still will pose a serious threat to coalition forces. The survey also found that what is emerging as a relatively quick and easy victory may give way to an uneasy peace. Six in 10 said they were at least somewhat concerned that the United States will get bogged down in a long and costly peacekeeping effort in Iraq while one in three disagreed. Despite those concerns, seven in 10 said the United States should commit troops to remain in Iraq to help maintain the peace significantly higher than the proportion who were willing to keep troops in the Middle East after the 1991 Persian Gulf War. But a small majority say the United Nations and not the United States should be in charge of the country until Iraq has a functioning government in place.

A total of 509 randomly selected adults nationwide were interviewed Wednesday night. The margin of sampling error for the overall results was plus or minus 5 percentage points. Americans are feeling better about their country than they were earlier this year. Two in three said they were satisfied with the way things were going in the United States, up 29 percentage points since early March before the war began. Americans also are feeling more positive toward the Iraqi people.

Three in four said they believe the people of Iraq are on the side of the United States a view shared by only half two weeks ago. But the survey also found that four in 10 worried that the war may have damaged relations with traditional allies, such as France, Germany and Russia, who opposed the war. And four in 10 expressed concern that the apparent ease with which coalition forces swept through Iraq and drove Saddam from power might lead the United States to become too reliant on military Night, weekend, and mobile-to-mobile minutes apply throughout expanded coverage area.
