Riverside Scene By RYAN REES Gannett Ntwi Serylc RIVERSIDE, Calif. Riverside 500 time is the most hectic period of the racing season, at RiversTdeTntemational Raceway.

The Riverside 500 is the annual West Coast showcase for the new model stock cars and the only road race of the year for the itockers. It may well be the last, too, as Riverside Raceway is planning a $3.8 million facelifting that' will include an oval track. Since early last the drivers and crews for the 60 or so cars have been assembling at the track preparing for the big race. Dan Gurney will not be in the front row for the Riverside 500 Sunday, but a pretty safe bet would say be will be there at the end. Gurney has this 500 mile road race for stock cars five of the six times it has been run and is' th'e overwhelming favorite 1 repeat again this year despite being third on the starting grid. He has only won' the pole position twice.

A. J. Foyt won the pole position Thursday when he zipped around the 2.7 mile course at an average speed of 110.366 miles per hour. He was the only driver in qualifying to. break the 110 mph barrier.

However, he was nearly a half 'second slower than Gurney's 1968. record qualifying time. Lee Roy Yarbrough finished second in qualifying in a somewhat surprising showing since he had been very unimpressive during practice runs. His speed was 109 979 around the eight turn track. Gurney was third followed by former Plymouth hero Richard Petty, who was fourth? David Pearson, two time runner up in the Riverside 500, was a disappointing His qualifying time was far below times he posted in practice runs and even in' tire tests nearly a month before the race.
