Rockies 6, Brewers 5 NL noteworthy McGwire says he is rooting for bonds Mark McGwire is hoping Barry Bonds breaks the home run record McGwire set three years ago. "All I'm going to say is he's got an excellent chance," McGwire said Friday night before the St. Louis Cardinals played Pittsburgh. "I'm rooting for him. If he gets it, it'll be a phenomenal feat." McGwire was hesitant to talk about the record chase, for fearing anything he said would be construed as sour grapes.

McGwire broke Roger Marls' 37-year-old record of 61 homers with his 70-homer season in 1998. Bonds hit his 68th homer on Friday night and has eight game left. "He's doing it routinely," McGwire said. "His pace is unbelievable. I've told guys in here, I'm calling 72, 73." The most impressive aspect of Bonds' record chase, to McGwire's thinking, was that he had only 455 at-bats.

"It's unbelievable," McGwire said. "He's totally blown awav what I did, even if the year ended today." Houston Astros right-hander Roy Oswalt left Friday's game against Chicago early after aggravating a strained groin. "Any time you have to deal with pain like that, you can't throw the ball where you want it," said Oswalt, who lasted just three innings and lost his first start since July 23. Oswalt had missed his previous start after straining his groin Sept. 18 in San Francisco.

Cincinnati Reds first baseman Sean Casey tore his right calf while running out a grounder Friday and will miss the rest of the season. Casey won't need surgery to fix the torn muscle, the latest major injury to Cincinnati's depleted infield. Josh Karp, a right-hander from UCLA who was the sixth overall pick in June's amateur draft, agreed to a contract with the Montreal Expos that includes a $2.6 million bonus. Oakland ab bb so Avg. "When you think of all the players who've played here, you have the feeling you're standing on sacred ground," he said Friday before starting his final series in the Bronx. "There are few ballparks around the league where this baseball feeling, this aura, comes over you." Ripken, who is retiring after the season, initially was scheduled to play his final series at Yankee Stadium. But that changed when the season was extended a week to make up games postponed by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Ripken will finish at home in Baltimore's Camden Yards on Oct.

6 vs. Boston. Ripken, who first played at Yankee Stadium on June 18, 1982, is to be honored in a pregame ceremony Sunday and will receive a gift from the Yankees. "He's a great credit to the game," Yankees manager Joe Torre said. "You know, he's woven into the fabric.

His father was here before him." Since saying June 19 he would retire, Ripken has hit .299 in 67 games, raising his average from .200 to .257. "It was the right time. I have no second thoughts," he said. "The decision wasn't made on this' basis of whether I could compete or not compete. I could probably hang around for another year." Seattle Mariners shortstop Carlos Guillen has been diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis and will be out for at least one week.

Guillen was not in the lineup Friday night when the AL West champion Mariners faced the Oakland Athletics, the AL wild-card team, in the opener of a three-game series. The Mariners expect Guillen back for the playoffs. The New York Yankees have 195 homers in 152 games and have a chance to become only the fourth team in club history to top the 200-homer mark (240 in 1961, 207 in 1998 and 205 last season).
