FRIDAY 22 OCTOBER 1993 THE AGE 27 Sport Age New names but the same old NSL Vies choose two rookies, two leggies By LAURIE SCHWAB Tbe National Soccer League begins its lstb season tonight, complete with changes to club ames and hasty repairs to the latest cracks la Its foundations. When the Newcastle Breakers kick off against Wollongong at 7.M pm, there will be a collective sigh ef relief about Just having ciou this far. Tbe Breakers, burdened with a $2 million debt between seasons, were balled out by neighboring club Walisend, wblch provided a loan. Then, not long afterwards, coach Bruce Stowell and general manager David McQuire resigned. Stowell later Joined Brisbane United, which was also In financial strife and which bad sacked its coach, Mlron Blelberg.

Brisbane United, rescued by Its major shareholder, tbe Queensland Soccer Federation, was reborn this week as Brisbane Strikers, complete with new strip and a determination to whip up enthusiasm among sports fans who were depresslngly apathetic about their state's previous national league clubs. Strikers is one of four new names In the national league, tbe other being Melbourne Brunswick United, previously Juvenilis, and Melbourne Knights and Sydney United, previously Melbourne Croatia and Sydney Croatia. Newly promoted Brunswick also known as Melbourne BUSC bas taken the place of the relegated Preston Makedonla. In a league that has had 2M coaching appointments since 1177, only three clubs have new coaches for 1II3-M Mlrko Bazlc at Melbourne Knights, Jim Foley at Newcastle and Stowell at Brisbane. One club, Sydney Olympic, bas a new ground.

It bas moved to Lelchhardt Oval from the dilapidated St George Stadium. Parramatta Eagles, who won the National League Cup final last Sunday, and Sydney United, the beaten finalist, are the most likely to threaten the league's traditional giants Marconi, South Melbourne, Adelaide City and the Melbourne Knights. Morwell Falcons have been the most active club on the transfer market, having signed their Ktb new player, John Gagetti. Tbe top dozen recruits, in no particular order, appear to be John Plllemer (Brunswick), Andrea Icardl (Marconi), Joe Splteri (Parramatta), David Cer-vlaskl (Melbourne Knights), Alexander Kuzmanovlc (Brunswick), Jason Polak (South Melbourne), Michael Reda (Adelaide City), Goran Neglc (Heidelberg), John Marovskl, Brian Bothwell, Lachlan Armstrong (Morwell Falcons), and Andrew Zlnnl (Brunswick). Lehmann steals show in return to old colors Darren Lehmann yesterday stole the show In bis return appearance In South Australian colors In the opening Sheffield Shield encounter, but Darren Webber's script also made for Interesting reading when the pair rescued their side from the brink of collapse In Brisbane.

centuries by the namesakes and a record South Australian fifth-wicket partnership at the Gabba helped SA seize the early Initiative over Queensland. The duo shared In a 160-run stand In contrasting centuries as SA went from 476 just before lunch In the first session to an impressive 6323 at stumps. Webber and Lehmann's efforts wrote them into the SA history books ahead of much more Illustrious company In the form of Sir Garfield Sobers and Ian Chappell wh set the previous Gabba best fifth-wicket of 156 in 1962-63. While Lehmann's magnificent 128, his first ton at the Gabba, was brisk and full of dash, Webber shed the scoring limelight early and only when his partner left did he assume the role of aggressor. After a first 50 taking US balls, Webber needed only 79 more to register his second Shield century in only eight appearances.

Webber combined In a second partnership of 87 with keeper Tim Nielsen before Nielsen fell for 26 in the second-last over of the day. The first partnership overshadowed the earlier deeds of Ttist paceman Craig McDermott, who opened the door for Queensland with a sizzling 10-over opening spell which returned him 315. In Brief Top players for classic Three of tbe world's top-20 men tennis players will compete In tbe Colonial Classic male and female Kooyong exhibition after Christmas. Austrian Thomas Muster (ranked ninth) will be the star attraction, along with Czech Karel Novacek (15) and Russian Alexander Volkov (17). Others for the 26-30 December round-robin are Spaniard Emllio Sanchez, New Zealander Brett Steven and Australia's John Fitzgerald.

Polish charge Polish riders took the first four placings and overall leadership of the Commonwealth Bank Cycle Classic yesterday. Daiiusz Baranowski became race leader after winning the 100-kilometre stage between Vales Point and Munmorah. Mann up front Englishman Dave Mann was resting in Benalla after maintaining the lead during the 10th stage of the cycling tour of Victoria and Tasmania yesterday. Elkington victory Texas-based Australian Steve Elkington beat American John Daly five and four In their first-round encounter In the World Matchplay Golf Championship at Wentworth In England last night Wallaby changes Matt Burke replaced Marty Roebuck In the rugby union side to play Languedoc-Rousslllon Selection In Narbonne, France, tomorrow. New South Wales winger Alistair Murdoch replaced Damien Smith.

Surprise leader Former Victorian construction contractor David Hill, who turned professional almost a year ago, was a surprise leader after shooting 65 in the first round of the $200,000 Perak Masters golf tournament at the Meru Valley course at Perak, Malaysia, yesterday. By MARTIN BLAKE Victoria's cricket selectors last night named two players for their first-class debuts and Indulged in the extravagance of picking two leg-spinners in the 12 for the Sheffield Shield opener against South Australia in Adelaide next week. Melbourne batsman Brad Hodge, 18, and teammate Richard Herman, 26, are the first-gamers. Hodge, who has just completed a stint at the Australian Institute of Sport's cricket academy in Adelaide, will be In the 11; Herman probably will be 12th man unless the team management strays from Its plan to unleash both leg-spinners, Shane Warne and Craig Howard, on the powerful South Australian batting line-up. The selectors have paid more than Up service to the stated policies of encouraging youth and attack.

Hodge and Howard are teenagers, fast bowler Simon Cook is 21 and top-order batsman Matthew Elliott, 22. Furthermore, chairman of selectors John Grant said that if the Adelaide Oval wicket had been prepared as expected, both Warne and Howard would play. "We looked at picking a side that could bowl the opposition out," he said. "If we get there and It's a greentop or something, we may change our position. But that (two spinners) would be our Intention If the conditions are as expected." with the Inclusion of Howard to join Warne.

"I applaud It," he said last night from his home In Cheltenham. "I think It makes the game more Interesting." Howard bad form on his side, with a six-wicket haul for Ring-wood In District cricket last weekend. The selectors also would have been mindful that with Warne expected to have Test commitments later this summer, Howard will be expected to step Into the breach. With just four first-class games to his name, he needs the experience. The new boys, Hodge and Herman, both played In the Mercantile Mutual Cup match against Queensland last weekend.

Hodge, a short, well-organised top-order batsman, has built his reputation on an outstanding junior career that included the captaincy of Victoria's under-19 side. Herman, who bats in the middle-order and bowls at medium pace, has worked his way through District ranks and played three Mercantile Mutual Cup matches last season. Cook, another Melbourne youngster who played two Shield games last year, replaced the Injured Damlen Fleming from last Sunday's losing side. Fleming, who has a hamstring strain, was included In a squad of 15 for Sunday week's one-day match against South Australia following the Shield encounter. Apart from the 12 for the Shield game, the other inclusions in that squad are James Sutherland and Ian Harvey.

The final side for the one-day match, which is tacked on to the end of the four-day Shield game, will be chosen next week. ShMd turn: 0 Jones (c), Dodemalde, Philips, Elliott, Ramshaw, Hodge, Berry, RerHel, Warne, Howard, Cook, Herman. Second XI (v Northern Territory): Allardtoe (c), Dowting, Ayrea, I Harvey, Harper, McLeod, Malllgan, GeJbralth, WWUms, Cortwtt, Wilson. Blue Jays shoot to 3-1 lead in runfest Philadelphia, Thursday The Toronto Blue Jays scored six runs in the eighth inning to climb back to a wild 15-14 baseball victory over the Philadelphia Phillies yesterday to take a 3-1 lead In the World Series. The Blue Jays stood one win away from their second successive championship -of major league baseball after surviving a game as ugly as the bloody scab on the chin of their starting pitcher Todd Stott-lemyre, a souvenir of an Ill-advised dive to base.

"I think It Just might go down in the annals as one of the all-time games for the World Series. It's unbelievable," said Philadelphia manager Jim Fre-gosi. "It was pretty wild. Just about everything happened. It was quite entertaining and quite long." Toronto manager Clto Gaston said: "Like I've been saying all year, this team doesn't quit.

They just keep coming right after you." The 29 runs in the game were the most by far In a World Series, breaking the 57-year-old record of 22. The four hours, 14 minutes duration beat the nine-Inning record of three hours, 48 minutes. Devon White had four runs batted in for Toronto, Including a two-RBI triple that plated the tying and Toronto's Rickey Henderson, left, is congratulated by Tony Fernandez after scoring in the first inning of game four against Philadelphia. south Australia Not since the 1950s has a Vic- fm Mrot torian side Included two specialist leg-spinners. At one stage Gaston tried to call in left-handed pitcher Tony Castillo but because of a phone malfunction right-hander Mark Elchhorn strolled out on to the field instead.
