6 SOUTHEAST VALLEY LIVING Z14 FRIDAY, JUNE 25, 2010 Mesa's Mekong Plaza to get many new Asian eateries By Nikki Buchanan THE REPUBLIC AZCENTRAL.COM The timing couldn't have been worse for Mekong Plaza, the attractive indoor Asian mall in Mesa that opened in October 2008. Despite a flagging economy, most of the original tenants in the complex have remained afloat. DINING Com Tam Thuan Kieu, a Vietnamese restaurant known for its "broken rice" platters, and Taiwan Food Express, the only Taiwanese restaurant in the Valley, are alive and well. And now that happy days are almost here again, the plaza is poised for a bona fide boomlet. If all goes as planned, the square-foot, climate-controlled space will boast new shops, food vendors and restaurants by late August.

"We want to make Mekong Plaza a comfortable gathering place for people so they can enjoy the many cultural aspects of said Chan Tieu, owner of Unphogettable. The bulk of the new restaurants will be fast casual operations positioned along a wall of the mall's food court. At the moment, the only food vendor is Wholly Grill, a Filipino outlet that serves marinated grilled meats as well as a rotating selection of classics, such as dinuguan and caldereta. Chicken Noodle House, which takes over the former My Lynn space, opens in early July. Despite its less-than-exotic name, the restaurant specializes in Vietnamese food, particularly bun, the soft, vermicelli-style rice noodles used in soups and cold noodle salads.

Mekong Bakery, owned and operated by the same folks who run AA Wholesome Bakery in the Super Ranch Market in Phoenix, is slated for an August debut. It moves into the space between Thai Spices, the only Thai restaurant in the mall, and Unphogettable, a Vietnamese eatery that focuses on pho, strategically located across the way from anchor tenant Mekong Supermarket. The bakery will carry a huge selection of traditional Asian pastries, such as Chinese steam buns, custard tarts, savory turnovers, flaky winter melon pastry, flaky lotusseed yolk pastry and taro loaf, as well as Western desserts chocolate cream horns, tiramisu and sponge cake. Sweets will include the occasional hybrid, such as redbean, green-tea cake and Tokyo cheesecake. Mekong Palace will be near the food court, and will be a full-service restaurant serving dim sum every day.

Decorated with traditional Chinese furnishings, the formal space will be available in the evenings for catered weddings and banquets. Hue Gourmet will showcase the cuisine of central Vietnam, known for its many small, spicy dishes and refined presentations. My Tho will specialize in bahn cuon, thin, crepe-like rolls made of rice flour and filled with minced pork, mushrooms and other ingredients. JaKo will bring together Japanese sushi and classic Korean dishes, such as bulgogi and kalbi. Asian Noodle House will conjure the inexpensive noodle restaurants of bigcity Chinatowns across the country.
