The girls with golden throats did more to drive the writing of operas than we care to admit. Did Mozart compose purely for the stage in the abstract, for his characters and their needs? Well, yes, actually, he did. But now and then, he was forced to face the fiscal facts and write an aria to fit the singer more than the subject. The singers were box office.

Soprano Patrice Michaels (formerly Patrice Michaels Bedi), along with. Chicago's Classical Arts Orchestra and conductor Stephen Alltop, has put together a compact disc that salutes Divas of Mozart's Day (on the Cedille label) with performances of 13 arias and duets by Mozart, Salieri, Martin Soler, Ci-marosa and others. For Michaels' lucid and open singing, warm but always sharply defined, and for the freshness of its concept as well as the newness of the repertoire, it's our Arizona Republic-KBAQ Classical CD of the Week. U5-4000 cd of the week Patrice Michaels, soprano 'Divas of Mozart's Day' KBAQ-FM (89.5) will air excerpts at 4 p.m. today.

sented are Nancy Storace, the English-born soprano who was the first Susanna in Mozart's Marriage of Figaro; Adriana Ferrarese del Bene, the first Fiordiligi in Mozart's Cosifan tutte; and Louise Villeneuve, who was Cost's first Dorabella. The selections include numerous substitute arias and even arias inserted by one composer into another composer's opera. Several are first recordings, including a bravura piece written by Salieri for an opera called La cifra. Most unusual of this unusual bunch: the world premiere of an accompanied recitative, written to open an aria by Cimarosa that was itself inserted into the opera of yet a third composer, Gugliemi. Opera is an imperfect art.

"These will be the original skitssegments that ran on KPHO-TV and offer a great peek at local TV history." So came the news, mentioned casually in an e-mail from AZ-TV's Ron Bergamo. It was the equivalent of hearing, in an off-hand statement, that Elvis was still alive. Wallace Ladmo, for everyone who has lived in Phoenix less than a week, was the TV phenomenon of Valley history. The sophisticated kids' show ran weekdays for 36 years, 1954 to the end of 1989, making it the longest-running children's show ever, anywhere, and the longest-running TV show in any format with the same cast: Bill Thompson as Wallace and Ladimir Kwiat-kowski as Ladmo. KPHO, which went from a tiny station to a huge CBS affiliate during those 36 years, ran a weekly Best of Wallace Ladmo series for six weeks in the summer of 1994.

There have been two count 'em, two plays written and produced about Wallace Ladmo, and the Arizona Historical Society maintains a wing in memory of the show. But none of this has slaked the thirst of true fans. For years, tapes containing hours of Wallace Ladmo material have languished at KPHO with no place to go. "The question about showing these tapes was always, 'What station would do says Pat McMahon, who played Gerald the spoiled brat and other characters on the show, starting in 1960. After dispensing its CBS obligations, KPHO no longer had available airtime.

So the station made arrangements with AZ-TV (Cox Cable 13; available some places as Channels 27 or 55) to put together a weekly compilation show hosted by McMahon. EMM MR. "We have probably enough material to do half an hour every week for about a year, without reruns." That's sweet, though the bittersweet is that there might have been so much more. "Much as with Steve Allen and (Johnny) Carson, some exec came in (at Channel 5) and looked at all the reels of tape and said, 'Let's put commercials on McMahon says. Wallace Ladmo was "not a silly show," he insists.

"It was more like Monty Python or Saturday Night Live for kids." Of course, there was that darned Ladmo bag. "The Ladmo bag was a paper sack filled with items from the show's sponsors. The contents were usually worth about $2.45," McMahon says. (A person in the show's live audience would be chosen at random to receive the Ladmo bag.) "I've met people, I don't care if they're surgeons or CEOs or whatever they are, whose faces will get long when I meet them and they'll say, 'I never won a Ladmo For fans of the original show, the Best of Wallace Ladmo should be a godsend. For the rest of us, it's a chance to finally find out what all the fuss has been about.

Sean Hannity, the conservative talk-show host heard at 7 p.m. weekdays over KFYI-AM (550), is coming to Scottsdale for live appearances to promote his book, Let Freedom Ring. Hannity is also the co-host of Hannity and Colmes on Fox TV. Hannity will talk and take questions from the audience at 8 p.m. Thursday at Monterra at WestWorld of Scottsdale.
