The building was constructed about 1890 by W.A, Miller, Oatman said, during Llano's late nineteenth century boom days. It housed the newspaper published by Will Cowan and his associates in its early days, The building was purchased about 1900 by Judge M.D. Slator who remedied it and it was used as the Llano National Bank beginning in 1901 for a number of years, the bank later moved to the northeast corner of the courthouse square. Omar Burleson has announced the names of young men of the 17th Congressional District he Is appointing to slates of nominees for the Military, Naval and Air Force Academies for admission this year. Loyd Stafford (Chip) Utterback, son of Lt. Col. (ret.) and Mrs. Curtis L.

Utterback of Kingsland, and a Llano High School senior, is listed on one slate of nominees for the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado. Rep. Burleson has 20 nominees for the USAF, listed on two slates of ten each. The Academies will now examine and appraise the nominees and select principals for admission, and qualified alternates from each slate.

Alternates may be given further consideration, depending upon available vacancies. HB Variable Rate Loan Dropped Henry Keller, Manager of the Federal Land Bank Association of Mason, received word today that The Federal Land Bank of Houston has reduced the interest hilling rate on variable rate loans to "This reduction affects more than 90 million dollars of variable rate loans to more than 2800 farmers and ranchers throughout Texas," Mr. Keller stated. The variable rate loan plan which was Introcuced by the Houston Bank in July 1969 lets the Interest rate "float" over the variations in the money market. In large measure, therefore, the rate In any specific year will reflect the changes In prices which the Bank must pay for the money it makes available for farm mortage loans, Keller pointed out that this action is In line with the bank's policy in providing farmers and ranchers credit at the lowest possible cost consistent with sound business practices.

Gayle Epperson, 14-year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs.

James Epperson, showed the reserve champion Chaolais cross steer, a 1080-pounder named "Greyhound" and bred by Fall Creek Ranch at Tow. Jamie Edwards, 17-year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Edwards, showed the champion In the Angus division. Her 1,040 pound steer, "Grande," was bred by Carl Meeks of Kerrville.

And Miranda Sue Rusche showed the second place summer yealrling Hereford steer of the show. Tom Epperson of Cherokee showed the 10th place senior Hereford steer. The champion steer of the show was exhibited by Jamie Dyer, a Brewster-Jeff Davis County 4-H member, her third year to show. Judge of the show was Dr. Miles McKee of Kansas State University, Manhattan. Mary Louise Grote had a big day winning both the champion and reserve champion honors. The champ was her senior heifer calf entry, Granite Mischann M16, a growthy, well- balanced, very feminine miss that has the makings of a top brood cow.

She was sired by Mischief D82, who is in service at Granite Hills Hereford BY SALOME Pitching to the green, putters length to the cup, was the game the women played last week. Four places and low putts were awarded. Pattye Renick won first; Liz Mitchell second; Salome Bowden third and Ethel Whltley fourth. Low Putts went to Dee Hoerster. Eleven Llano men participated in the traveling men's four ball Wednesday, Jan. 28. On the winning team were Wayne Bowden and Spencer Weber with 155; second was Sam Rabb's team with a 153; and third, Jim Moss Inks, 146. Jayne Morris' tea sipping friend, Dorothy Porch, invited her out for a game of golf. She told Jayne to wear something with pockets so she could carry her balls and tees.

Jayne's reply was "You mean I have to carry a glass of tea in my pocket all that way?" TOPS Celebrate First Anniversary Llanoan's Husband Gets Expert Rating U.S. ARMY, Private First Class Samuel D. Verette, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney A.

Verette of San Saba, recently fired expert with the M-16 inGer many. Pfc. Verette's wife, Dora, lives at 706 W. Hamilton Street in Llano, The expert rating is the highest mark a soldier can achieve on his weapons qualification test. Pfc.

Verette, a truck driver with Company of the Fourth Armored Division's 504th Supply and Transport Battalion entered the Army in February, 1970, and completed basic training at Fort Ord, where he was last stationed, A 1969 graduate of San Saba High School, he was employed by Wilco, of Floresville before entering the Army. The Bluebonnet TOPS Club celebrated its first anniversary last week with a party and salad supper. The total loss for the week was 41 pounds, the total gain only nine pounds among the 30 members present. Betty Jackson was Queen of the Week and Una Mae Hopson was Queen of the Month. The number of members enrolled during 1970 was 65 including drop-outs, those who failed to renew, KOPS, Stork Club members and transfer members in or out of the chapter.

The net pounds lost by the chapter during the year of 1970 was the total gained was 10.50 The average loss per member was 17,14, The enrollment is now 41 members, with Mrs, Mary Lou Smathers president. She is by JW Sam Domino 891, also in service at Granite Hills. Mary Louise'a parents are Mr. and Mrs. James Grote, manager of Granite Hills. The spring yearling class was won by Mary Grote on Granite Mischann M4.
