Yet the equal day and night does not arrive here until the 26th.

my? I'm in misery, and you're worrying about the equinox. Great. I have the coid from hell. The worst cold in history. It's worse than Genghis Khan.

I haven't had a cold for a year or so, so I'm actually kind of enjoying have something new to whine about. Anyway, your question would have been more appropriately directed to The Republic's astronomy expert, John Stanley, who is affectionately known around the newsroom as John Stanley. But I say, let Stanley find his own stuff to write about; I have a cold. You are correct, sir, the equinox is at 10:27 a.m. today.

Sunrise is at or was at, depending on what time you read this 6:16 a.m. Sunset is 6:27 p.m. This leaves nine more minutes of day than night. This difference drops over the next few days until Tuesday, the 26th when sunrise will be at 6:19 a.m. and sunset will be at 6:20 p.m.

This is all give-or-take a few seconds here and there. It's a matter of latitude. In the Northern Hemisphere, at higher latitudes the day of equal night and day is closer to the equinox than at lower latitudes. At five degrees latitude, the equal date is Oct. 15.

At 40 degrees, it's Sept. 26. It also has something to do with the fact the sunrise and sunset times are based on the outer rim of the sun's disk while the equinox is based on the center of the disk. It gets pretty complicated. You can check it out at aa.usno.navy You could probably prove this yourself with a basket-' ball and a light bulb, but I have no idea how.

Actually, I don't really care right now. Did I mention that I have a cold? Reach Thompson at clay.thompsonarizona republic.com or (602) 444-8612. Low Med.
