The Pittsburg Senior High School, graduation exercises in May will not include a commencement This breaks a tradition as old as the school itself. The innovation came through a joint decision of school authorities and members of the graduating class.

Instead of an outsider uttering the traditional encouragement for seniors to "go out into the world with courage," that spot will be filled by a member of the graduating class. He will be chosen by the class. Behind the shift is the belief that at commencements "what is said here will be little remembered." The Pittsburg program will be devoted almost entirely to the seniors themselves, plus a sprinkling of entertainment from some underclassmen. Obviously, Principal John England must present the class and there must be a limited remarks by City Superintendent of Schools Earl Bevan. But that's about all.

Bevan says the change is not original with the Pitlsburg school. A similar program was presented in a Colorado school with much success. This is the second major change in commencement procedure at the senior high school. But what about the performers themselves? What does it mean to them? Why do housewives and businessmen take time off year after year for rehearsals which begin in late January? Mrs.

Kenneth Almquist of Assaria, who has been in the Messiah 12 years, and the conductor, Elmer Copley, had some answers at a recent Messiah Press Day on the Bethany College campus. Mrs. Almquist, mother of four children who recently celebrated her 25th wedding anniversary, says she has "always loved to sing." "It's such an inspiration to sing in it," she said. "Lots of times you feel like you are listening to a sermon. There's so much feeling in the music that you almost feel as though you were at the crucifixion." Pointing out there arc many Messiah choruses, Mrs, Almquist said that since the 450-voice Lindsborg society is bigger it tries to put on a little belter performance.

So I ask myself what can I do to make'the music better than the year before, or if not better, what new insight can I bring forth from the music." Copley, who was assistant to a chaplain in his Army experience, has done graduate work at Juliard in New York and attended Augustana College in Rock Island, 111.
