But they refuse to discuss the notion a new Los Arcos arena may not be ready for the drop of the puck on the 2001-02 season. "We can achieve it," said Shawn Hunter, Coyotes president. "We're confident we have everybody at the city and on the development team working in the same direction." Several factors raise questions about the time line's viability, however.

A builder and an architect have yet to be chosen, though preliminary discussions have been held with a number of firms that specialize in sports facilities. The team, the city and the multipurpose facilities district that will own the arena haven't ironed out operating and development agreements or sealed a deal on an arena lease. Zoning and design approvals must be obtained. Scottsdale officials don't expect Ellman or the Coyotes to turn over one shovel at Los Arcos before January or February.
