C12 The Arizona Republic Thursday. November 4, 1999 Arena time line uncertain: i Orioles Brewers 3icK managers BASEBALL NOTES Hargrove, Lopes to take helms ARENA, firm Page CI an aggressive time line for completing the $185 million arena that will anchor a redeveloped mall. But they refuse to discuss the notion a new Los Arcos arena may not be ready for the drop of the puck on the 2001-02 season. "We can achieve it," said Shawn Hunter, Coyotes president. "We're confident we have everybody at the city and on the development team working in the same direction." Several factors raise questions about the time line's viability, however.

A builder and an architect have yet to be chosen, though preliminary discussions have been held with a number of firms that specialize in sports facilities. The team, the city and the multipurpose facilities district that will own the arena haven't ironed out operating and development agreements or sealed a deal on an arena lease. Zoning and design approvals must be obtained. Scottsdale officials don't expect Ellman or the Coyotes to turn over one shovel at Los Arcos before January or February. The Coyotes agree that's an accurate projection, This compresses the arena con- struction timetable including demolition of the existing Los 3 Arcos structures to 19 or 20 months in order to be open in time- for the 2001-02 season, So what happens if Los Arcos is 3 still a hard-hat area when the teamJ needs to move in? Burke said it's possible his team2 might play the first 10 or 15 games of the 2001-02 season on the road.

Also, Veterans Memorial Colise- urn in Phoenix, where the minor league Mustangs play, would wel- come the Coyotes on a short-term basis. "We're open to it," said Jim2 Rogers, general manager of Valley Arena Management. "It would help'i put the Mustangs on the map." 2 But the prospect of a lease extension at America West Arena- was not something the Coyotes were willing to talk about. At thej same time, Jerry Colangelo, whose Suns operate America West did not return a phone call seeking comment on the situation. 2 "We have to be focused on getting (Los Arcos) done," Hunter said.

"Anything else would be unfair to our partners." 3 earlier in the day on the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Web site, will be announced today, the source said. Brewers General Manager Dean Taylor said Tuesday the team was done with its interviews and was "very much looking forward to having an announcement within 48 hours. That's our goal." Red Sox Pedro Martinez overwhelmingly won the Associated Press Major-League Player of the Year award Wednesday after a dominating sea- i son that saw him lead the big leagues in wins and ERA. The Boston Red Sox pitcher received 56 votes in nationwide balloting by sports writers and broadcasters. The second-place finisher, Atlanta third baseman Chipper Jones, got just 14 votes one-fourth the total that Martinez received.

Cleveland outfielder Manny Ramirez was the only other player to reach double digits, getting 12 votes. Indians Cleveland Indians Baseball Co. shares rose 14 percent after a television station reported that the sale of the team to a group headed by Cleveland attorney Larry Dolan was imminent. A spokesman for the Indians, the only publicly traded baseball team, wouldn't confirm the report on WJW-TV in Cleveland. The team hasn't scheduled a news conference.

Devil Rays Tampa Bay Devil Rays bench coach Frank Howard is taking a new position in the front office as a senior adviser for baseball operations, the club said. Howard, 63, hit 382 home runs in the major leagues with Los Angeles, Washington, Texas and Detroit. He managed the San Diego Padres and New York Mets in the early 1980s. Yankees David Cone, still unsure of his future, became the first member of New York to file for free agency since the team won it second straight Vorld Series last week. Compiled from reports by the Associated Press and Bloomberg News.

Hargrove, 50, replaces Ray Miller, who was fired Oct. 6. While he led the Indians to the World Series twice in eight full seasons, the Indians lost to Atlanta in 1995 and to Florida in 1997 and still seek their first championship since 1948. Hargrove could have taken a paid vacation for a year instead of signing with the Orioles. The Indians owed him $600,000 for the remainder of his contract.

The Orioles are also looking to replace General Manager- Frank Wren, who was fired with Miller on Oct. 6. The team has not announced a timetable for that Lopes, the first-base coach of San Diego, and New York Yankees' third-base coach Willie Randolph were the finalists to succeed Phil Garner, who was fired late in the season. While there was no immediate announcement, it was confirmed by a team source who spoke on the condition he not be identified. Lopes' hiring, which was reported Republic news services Mike Hargrove was hired today as manager of the Baltimore Orioles, agreeing to a three-year contract, while the Milwaukee Brewers reportedly have selected Davey Lopes as their new manager.

"It's good to be back in the big leagues, even though it wasn't that long ago," said Hargrove, fired by the Cleveland Indians last month. "It's good to be back as a Baltimore Oriole. I'm looking forward to making a difference." Hargrove, who led Cleveland to AL Central titles in the past five seasons, wore an Orioles jacket as he made the announcement at Camden Yards and later donned an Orioles cap. is cshf! 2765 2763 2763 2765 27(3 2765 2783 2743 2763 General Trades Trades Trades General General Trades Mechanical Trades AN INSTANT INCOME Cash Daily, Co. veh.
