Southern Phoenix. Services: 9 a.m. Monday at the mortuary. Su Shueh-lin, urged free expression Associated Press TAIPEI, Taiwan Su Shueh-lin, an eminent writer and veteran of China's 1919 May Fourth Movement for free expression, died April 23. She was 104.

In a career spanning 70 years, Ms. Su produced more than 50 published works, including collections of essays, classical Chinese poetry, novels and literary criticism. Her works had a deep impact on generations of leaders and political reformers. After studying in France, Ms. Su returned to teach at various universities around China.

In the 1930s, she produced her best-known and most influential works: a novel, Thorn Heart, and a collection of essays, Green Sky. The theme in her writing was criticism of communism and the intrusion of politics into art and literature. Arbit Blatas, sculptor, painter stage designer NEW YORK Arbit Blatas, a Lithuanian-born sculptor, painter and stage designer noted for his portraits of Picasso, Matisse, Sou-tine, Cocteau and other artists, died April 27. He was 90. Mr.

Blatas has a series of seven bronze tablets on a wall of the Campo del Nuovo Ghetto in Venice. The 1979 tablets commemorate the night of Dec. 5, 1943, when 200 of the city's Jews were rounded up for deportation and death. Mr. Blatas also did the black-and-white drawings used in the introductory segments of the 1978 TV series The Holocaust.

Heinz L. Fraenkel-Conrat, professor emeritus BERKELEY, Calif. Biochemist Heinz L. Fraenkel-Conrat, a professor emeritus of molecular and cell biology at the University of California at Berkeley, died April 10 of pulmonary failure. He was 88.

He discovered that genetic information controlling viral reproduction is carried in the nucleic acid core of each virus particle.
