t- E6 The Arizona Republic Sunday, August 30, 1998 Pax TV stakes its future on family viewing Photos versed in poet cording to the publicity pitch) while linking "heartwarming, morality-based" animated series. Earlier this summer, however, the network ran ads in Hollywood trade' publications condemning "so-called creative people" at other networks for their "sometimes bizarre and depressing views of family values" and for promoting "alternative lifestyles" in their programming. Critics pounced on the ads for their gay-bashing subtext. Paxson officials apologized, but the impression had been set that the network might equate "family" values exclusively with "Christian" values. Meeting with TV critics a few days after the ads appeared, Jeff Sa-gansky, the network's president and CEO and Paxson's second-in-command, attempted to diffuse such thinking by first noting that he's Jewish.

Then he pointed out that the bird in the network's logo was a dove of peace, and otherwise unrelated to Christian symbology. files of good people doing good. There's definitely, a touch of the angelic 'about Paxson and his new network. Famously loud and proud about his born-again Christianity, Paxson announced his new network last year by essentially blaming television for ruining society. is the No.

1 thing that has most negatively affected the American home in the last 40 years?" he asked in an interview with the Bloomberg news service. His answer: "Television." To that end, PAX will offer a Sunday-night centerpiece titled It's a Mjracle. Hosted by actress Nia Pee-ples and country singer Billy Dean, the show js "about the power of faith and the assistance we sometimes receive from a source greater than ourselves," according to publicity material. Weekend morning programing blocks for kids (titled Cloud 9) will be hosted by wing-wearing teen angels (Gabriel, Michael and Rapha-ella) who will display "extreme style and teen attitude" (again, ac- the Death of the Rebel Sharpshooter. Our young man slumps in much the same These series are less clever than his earlier work, but make up for the loss by being more subtle.

But not everything in the show is quite so successful. For many of the images, he uses for his model a young man identified as John Painter. Painter is an extraordinarily well-built fellow, but a little too obviously a gay stereotype calendar boy. Nothing in the show is overtly sexual. No schoolchildren should have to avert their tender eyes.

But for a good number of the images, Painter stands like a pretty Narcissus. His soft, boyish face and blond curls belie his beefy arms and bodybuilder chest. Michats clearly sees him as a modern Adonis, the stand-in for the Greek ideal. But he comes off a bit too campy, a bit too kitschy to be taken seriously. The worst is an unintentional parody of a teenage girl's adolescent equiphilia, in which our ringlet-haired boy kneels in supplication to a large, black stallion and seems to wait with his head thrown back expectantly for a kiss and the ecstasy it will bring.

I couldn't help laughing out loud. In another artist, it might have been meant ironically, but the whole of Michals' career says otherwise. Michals has addressed his own homosexuality before, and done so movingly, without resorting to images of buff young men in stone-washed jeans. It is a serious miscalculation by an artist, whose critical faculty has failed him in the face of his own desire. It's as if Titian were painting nude Greek goddesses and used Playboy bunnies for models.

Paxson bought instant credibility by signing Sagansky to the network.

One of modern television's most ac- complished programers, Sagansky headed up prime time for NBC during the mid-1980s, and was CBS entertainment president during the' early 1990s. At CBS, he oversaw the creation of two of Pax TV's cornerstones. Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman and Touched by an Angel. Sagansky, for one, is certain that the family audience still exists.

"Network television was based on it, and, in fact, as recently as when I was at NBC in the mid-1980s all the way up until 1990, that was NBC's foundation. And parents watched with their kids. "NBC went out of that business, as has every network. I think that all of them have made a really big mistake, because the country hasn't changed that much." The next frame pulls back to show a young man hardly more than a boy who holds the open book and chews on a corn tassel. The third frame pulls back further so we can see the boy and book are sitting in a corn field.

The fourth pulls back so far that you can barely see the boy's face in the crowd of corn stalks. The final image pulls back far enough to show us the cornfield in the larger landscape. The boy is all but invisible; if you hadn't been shown him in earlier photographs, you wouldn't even know to look for him. The effect is both delicate and striking. One remembers Whitman's line in Song of Myself, "1 bequeath myself to the dirt to grow from the grass I love, If you want me again look for me under your boot-soles." The sense of being swallowed by the cosmos is palpable.

The best of these sequences is probably Adhesiveness, in which the young man with the book reclines under a tree, and as we pull back from him, each succeeding image shows him more and more obscured by the leaves dropped from the trees, so that in the last panel, he is dead and buried. One cannot help but be reminded of Alexander Gardiner's famous Civil War photograph of 939-9715 or 222-RLM 010 BETHANY HOMfc RD 4 55TH BLADE (R) Plus LOST IN SPACE (PG-1 3) DANCE WITH ME (PG) Plui-THE MASK OF ZORRO (P5-13) DEAD MAN ON CAMPUS (fl) Plus SNAKE EYES (R) WRONGFULLY ACCUSED (PG-13) Plut-TME AVENGERS(PG-13) SAVING PRIVATE RYAN (R) Plus -THE NEGOTIATOR (R) HALLOWEEN: H20 (R) Plus HAV PLENTY (R) EVER AFTER (PG-13) Plus SMALL SOLDIERS (PG-1 3) SOMETHING ABOUT MARY (R) Plus LETHAL WEAPON 4 (R) ARMAGEDDON (PG-13) Plus MAFIA (PG-13) 949-9451 or 222-FILM041 McKELLIPS 1 HAYObN HD BLADE (R) Plus LOST IN SPACE (PG-13) DEAD MAN ON CAMPUS (R) Plus SNAKE EYES (I WRONGFULLY ACCUSED (PG-13) Plus LETHAL WEAPON 4 IR) SAVING PRIVATE RYAN (R) Plus -THE NEGOTIATOR (R) HALLOWEEN: H20 R) Plus DISTURBING BEHAVIOR (R) SOMETHING ABOUT MARY (R)-(Hus -THE MASK OF ZORRO IPG-13) SHEA 14 LUXURY CINEMAS HARKINR HORKINS ARCADIA LUXURY 8 If. 5 -fT a TMASRD 32-MUKIQI4 waul HARKINS DIU TOMER LUXURY AvfV 5 A.l Hl: miM01I DMfTM.
