He continued to talk about his month at the Meadows, a rehab center outside Wicken-burg, throughout the week, but he really got into it on Wednesday on another station, KTAR-AM (620). It hasn't been great radio on either station, but it was interesting and honest, and maybe some people were inspired to seek help for their own problems. The two hours Kelly and his wife, Kira, spent on KTAR followed up on his talk with Pat McMahon five MICHAEL CLANCY The Arizona Republic KNAIKPHF (88.3) SpanishChristian KEAR (88.9) Christian KBAQ (89.5) Classical KFLR (90.3) Christian KGCB (90.9) Christian KJZZ (91.5) NPR newstalkjazz KKFR (92.3) Urban Top 40 KDKB (93.3) Album rock KSWG (94.1) Country KOOL (94.5) '60s oldies KYOT (95.5) Contemporary jazz KMXP (96.9) Rock adult contemporary KRXS (97.3) Album rock KUPD (97.9) Album rock KKLT (98.7) Adult contemporary KESZ (99.9) Contemporary KDDJ (100.3) Modern rock KSLX (100.7) Classic rock KZON (101.5) Rock alternative KMX (102.5) Country KZPZ (103.5) Spanish KPIY (103.9) Top 40 KBZG (104.399.3) Oldies KZZP (104.7) Hot adult contemporary KMYL (105.3) Adult standards KLVA (105.596.3) Christian KHOT (105.9) classics KEDJ (106.3) Modern rock KMJK (106.9) Urban adult contemporary KWA (107.192.7) Spanish contemporary KMLE (107.9) Country AM RADIO si KESZ-FM (99.9) continued to build upon its strong holiday-season audience to reach a level unseen in this market since 1996, before radio station consolidation got under way.

With an estimated 7.5 percent of the audience, KEZ led second-place KNIX-FM (102.5) by 1.7 share points. It also built on its 6.7 share from the fall. Using the analogy of a retail store, KEZ home of the Beth and Bill morning show succeeded with its all-Christmas-music format in getting lots of new customers in the door. This trend shows that, in January at least, many of them hung around. The challenge is for the station to maintain the audience it has gained and add even more people so that the numbers for the winter book remain high.

KEZ is a station that people, especially women, like once they hear it. For years, the station did little promotion and less marketing. Now, with Beth and Bill on Channel 3 (KTVK) six mornings a week, with billboards around town and with commercial spots too hard, not too on several stations, the word is out. KOY-AM (550) has dropped a couple of specialty shows on weekends. Gone as of last week were Sunday Showtunes, produced by Valley resident and former reporter Bud Wilkinson, and the Saturday-morning garden show, featuring Mary Irish of Desert Botanical Garden.

Terry Hardin, the station's general manager, said, "We find nobody is bigger than Frank Sinatra." He said that both programs had a loyal following but that the majority of KOY listeners preferred the nostalgic music that is the staple of the station. Wilkinson says he is looking for another local outlet for the show "and may be close" to finding one. The latest trailer for the Star Wars prequel, Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, debuted Friday, giving fans yet another glimpse of the summer's most highly anticipated movie. The two-minute clip was shipped to theaters nationwide this week and will screen with 20th Century Fox's teen space epic Wing Commander. It can also be viewed at www.starwars.com on the Internet. However, it's anyone's guess as to exactly where else the trailer will be shown.

Studio execs on Thursday urged Star Wars fans to call their local theaters for screening info. The previous Phantom Menace trailer, which debuted in November, teased viewers with scenes giving indications of the cast, locations and new hardware in the film, which is set about 50 years before the story line of the now-classic Star Wars trilogy. The new trailer is generously laced with images of exotic mechanized creatures and glimpses of laser-sword It features a scene between two of the movie's biggest stars Liam Neeson, playing a Jedi master, and Ewan McGregor, his apprentice the young Obi-Wan Kenobi. It also provides a 'STAR WARS' WATCH Episode The Phantom Menace premieres May 19 peek at a new character: Jar-Jar, a tall, reptilian-looking alien with floppy ears. The trailer has already wowed at least one audience: more than 4,000 movie-theater operators, who got a look at it Wednesday night at the ShoWest convention in Las Vegas.

With Star Wars creator George Lucas on hand, composer John Williams who scored Phantom Menace conducted the Las Vegas Philharmonic Orchestra in a performance of the original Star Wars theme. Lucas also announced that Phantom 's opening had been moved forward to May 19. Worried that someone would pirate the clip, Fox distribution chief Tom Sherak made an impassioned plea that "if you see a person to your left or right holding up a video camera while we're showing you what we're about to show you, stop them." "Don't start a fight, put your hands over the lens," he said. Sherak joked that because of the interest in the first trailer, the studio was going to cut Phantom into two-minute chunks and sell them individually. As for going on the air with the details of his personal issues, Kelly said talking about them helps him.

It also helps his audience understand, he said, and it subdues any rumors that might be flying around. Kelly said he is thankful to have survived, both personally and professionally. "This is my second chance," he said. Kelly said the radio program, with a new sidekick in Jackie West, will "go the way it goes." He said his partnership with former co-host Lu Valentino took the show away from his strengths. "Our chemistry was not the best for me or for the radio station," he said.

Already, the show sounds more relaxed and more real, which can only be good for KZZP.
