Petty is perhaps the best-known musician to jump on the MP3 bandwagon, joining such artists as the Beastie Boys. Several small independent record labels, including Ry-kodisk, have gotten into the format as well. 1 MP3 works by compressing music into data bits that can be easily downloaded to computer hard drives via free software. The music can then be played back at near-CD quality. Consumer electronics companies have recently rolled out portable, Walkmanlike devices that enable listeners to tape copies and play the zona connections, such as Ron Nelson, Robert Baksa, James DeMars and Robert Muczynski.

Once a week, when Beeaff 's shift ends at KBAQMesa, he wheels over to KBAQTempe to record his commentary for Southwest Season Ticket or The Phoenix Symphony. For, while the sun shines, KBAQ broadcast studios rule. When the sun sets, however, the production people come out. There are no more ubiquitous faces at classical concerts in the Valley than those of J.R. Taylor, Ben Taylor and, less frequently, Margaret Morgan.

Morgan, who once produced historical recordings for the Smithsonian Institution, directs the KBAQ production team from her office at KAET, venturing forth to join her mainstays, the Taylors (they are not related), at about a third of the 100 concerts they attend and record in a typical season. Go to a Valley classical event other than the Phoenix Symphony (whose concerts are recorded separately) and you'll likely find J.R. Taylor, producer, and Ben Taylor, engineer, finagling with microphones and levels to make sure the concert being heard by a few hundred will be available to several thousand or more via taped delay. Some events are harder to capture than others. "The biggest challenge is opera," says Ben Taylor, who learned his trade in New York and honed it working for the Elektra-Nonesuch label.

The music Beeaff and the others spin is a vigorous mix of the expected and the unexpected, making KBAQ a place where you can hear Beethoven and Ravel, but also Joan Tower and Michael Torke. The production studios are among the most respected in the nation, turning out fehows for evening consumption on KBAQ, while also supplying hundreds of minutes annually to Performance Today, a nationally syndicated classical-radio magazine show, heard on KBAQ at 5 p.m. weekdays. Pledge drives, anathema to many public-broadcast audiences, are met with such immediate responses at KBAQ that it generally reaches its goals in only three or four days instead of dragging on for a week. There's also now a KBAQ site (http:kbaq.ijjo.maricopa.eduhome home.html) on the Web.

Wait a minute it has two Web sites. The other (http:www.kaet belongs to the production arm and is part of the site for ASU's Channel 8 (KAET). Linking the two studios is Beeaff, the Valley's most familiar name in classical broadcast. Beeaff can be heard both during the day and hosting some of the evening shows. A veteran of the old KONC commercial classical station in the late 1980s and director of its smaller successor (also called KONC) from 1990 until its demise in 1993, Beeaff came onboard at KBAQ as morning host three years ago and was named music director last year.

The adjustment in balance of the familiar with the fresh when Beeaff became music director was almost instantaneous.
