Aiferez, artist, Pancho Villa soldier Associated Press NEW ORLEANS Enrique Aiferez, an artist who gained almost as much fame for his travels with Pancho Villa as for his Art Deco sculptures that decorate New Orleans, died Sept 13 at age 98. More than 20 of his works grace New Orleans City Park, and his sculptures mark many neighborhoods in the city and Mexico. At age 12, Mr. Aiferez began serving with the Revolutionary forces. He was featured in a PBS -special -American Experience: The Hunt for Pancho Villa, as one of the last survivors of Villa's army.

Mr. Aiferez came to America. He arrived in New Orleans in 1929 to join Tulane University's expedition to Uxmal, Mexico, to reproduce the Quadrangle of the Nunnery for the 1933 World's Fair in Chicago. Besides City Park, his works appear in the Times-Picayune newspaper building, Touro Infirmary and the New Orleans Museum of Art, among other locations. He executed commissions across the United States and in Canada, South America, Europe and Asia.

But it was the Fountain of the Four Winds he created for New Orleans' Lakefront Airport in 1937 that gained him the most notoriety. One of the four figures on the statue a well-endowed nude male. Mr. Aiferez was ordered to chisel off the genitalia. He refused, standing guard at the fountain with a rifle until then-first lady Eleanor Roosevelt intervened in his behalf.

New Orleans Mayor Sidney Bar-thelemy presented him with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 1993. Later that year, a street was named for him in City Park. Ilia Odessia Finagin, 82, of Mesa, a retail manager, died Sept. 13, 1999. She was born in Golden City, Mo.
