THE MANHATTAN MERCURY MANHATTAN, KANSAS, SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 21,1969 For starters: 48-15 Cats bomb Baylor in a record of rampage By DAVE WRIGHT (Mercury Sports Editor WACO Kansas State unleashed its best offensive showing in 14 years to completely ruin coach Bill Beall's debut as Baylor's head coach with a 48-15 victory over the Bears here last night. The Wildcats capitalized on a number of Baylor errors to build up a big lead early, and then they just kept pouring it on. The Cats chalked up 485 yards on offense 312 on the ground with the first-teamers sitting out much of the second half, A stingy defense held the Bears to only 137 yards. K-State's victory represented the Bears' first loss ever in an opening game at Baylor stadium, which was opened in 1951. Likewise, Wildcat coach Vince Gibson has never lost an opener in his coaching career.

It didn't take the Cats long show they meant business- They took the opening kickoff on their own 30, and quarterback Lynn Dickey drove them 70 yards in 10 plays for a touchdown. The clincher was a Dickey to Mike Montgomery pass in the left flat from five yards out. Max Arreguin's kick the first of six in a rowj made it 7-0 with 10:16 left in the first quarter. Dickey threw an interception on the first play the next time K-State got the ball, but the Wildcats got it right back as Baylor fullback Rick Cooper fumbled. Mike Kolich recovered at the Bear 25.

Penalties stalled the drive at the 21 but Arreguin hit a 37 yard field goal to put the Cats up 10-0. K-State had two touchdowns called back on that series, both to split end Forry Wells. First, Dickey threw to Wells from the 15, but was just outside the back line of the end zone. Next, Dickey hit him from the 16, but the play was void as Dickey had crossed the scrimmage line before he threw. The Wildcats once again in the first quarter.

Nose guard John Stucky pounced upon another fumble at the Bear 19, and it took the Cats just two plays to capitalize. Dickey looped one to Wells from 17 yards out, and this time it counted. Arreguin's kick was again good, to move the count to 17-0 with 4:39 showing. The next TD drive got its start still in the first period. A bad snap on a-punt gave Kansas State the ball again at Baylor's 31 yard line.

The Cats ground it out in seven plays, with Mack Herron diving over from the one with 14:22 left in the half. Arreguin's kick ran the count to 24-0. A mishandled punt snap gave Baylor some life. Gary Sutton blocked Jim Crowel's kick, and Baylor tackle Earl Maxfield picked up the ball and rambled 22 yards for a touchdown. Steve Stewart's kick made it 24-7 with 9:45 to go in the half.

But the Wildcats came right back to drive for another score that really applied the deciding blow. Dickey drove the Cats 80 yards in 10 plays with a 19 yard draw play by Jerry Lawson and a 36 yard burst off tackle by Henry Hawthorne being the big play. Both are second team running backs. Dickey hit Lawson from eight yards out for his third TD pitch of the half. Again Arreguin converted to make it 31-7 with 5:44 in the period.

That's the way the half ended. But K-State picked up right where it left off and scored on its first possession of the second half. This time the Cats went 70 yards in''eight plays. A 22 yard pass from Dickey to Sonny Yarnell kept the drive alive. Russell Harrison broke into the scoring page with a 12-yard scamper around right end at 5:52 of the third quarter.

Arreguin split the uprights to make it 38-7. K-State's final TD came just two minutes later after Clarence Tech wins, 38-22 K.U. drops opener LUBBOCK, Tex. (AP) fensive halfback Denton Fox took a wayward Kansas pass and raced 55 yards for a touchdown in a wild and wooly fourth quarter to give Texas Tech a 38-22 season opening football victory over Kansas last night. The surprising Raiders surged from a 16-0 second quarter deficit and moved into the lead 1716 with two lightning thrusts in the third quarter.

Tech got on the Scoreboard with a 42-yard field goal by Jerry Don Sanders in the second quarter than shot into the lead on a 55-yard interception return by Tech defender Dennis Lane and a one-yard plunge by work- horse Danny Hardaway in the third quarter. Kansas' poetry spouting quarterback Jimmy Ettinger pulled Kansas back into a brief lead on a seven-yard pass to wingback Steve Conley before Tech found scoring daylight and rammed across three more scores for the convincing intersectional victory. Tech's closing flurry included a 57-yard pass from Joe Matulich to flanker David May; Fox's interception return and a three-yard run by Reagan Young. Ettinger, who already has had two books of poetry published rammed over Kansas' first touchdown on a keeper from the one yard line and passed to wingback Willie Amison on a 15-yard touchdown shot in the second quarter to put the Jayhawkers in early command. Ettinger, taking charge of Kansas' offense after the graduation of second team Ail-American Bobby Douglass used the bullish runs of fullback John Riggins and the sweeps of wingback Ron Jesse effectively.

Tech, playing before a record season opening crowd of 42,000 fans, appeared doomed in the first half when it failed to muster any kind of an offensive showing. Scott's interception deep in Wildcat territory gave the Cats the ball. Herron came up with one of his patented big plays, spurting around right end on a fourth and one situation. He got more than enough for the first down as he broke loose for a 68 yard touchdown scamper. Arreguin converted for a 45-7 margin at 7:51.

Baylor's other touchdown also came as the result of a bad punt snap. The snap sailed over Crowel's head with the Cats at their own 37. and it rolled all the way to the end zone, where Roy McDearmon pounced on it for the TD. Stewart hit Perry Jackson for the two point conversion to make it 45-15 at 5:41 of the third quarter. Arreguin capped off the K- State scoring with a 38 yard field goal with 1:52 to go in the game, giving him 12 points for the night.

Herron had a big night offensively, carrying the ball 12 times for 150 yards, and catching five passes for 56 yards to give him a tandem of 171. The totals led the Cats in both totals led the Cats in both depa rtments. Dickey connected on 17 of 26 passes for 138 yards and his three TD's. The Wildcats, now 1-0, will meet Arizona next Saturday in Tucson. 'WAY TO GO, CATS It wasn't like being there in person but the next best thing for some 3,000 Wildcat rooters came last night in Ahearn Fieldhouse as they watched on closed-circuit TV as K-State defeated Baylor in the season-opener 48-15. At each Cat thrust the television watchers rose to cheer just as they do at the home games as seen in the upper photo. The inset at upper left, shows some action on the 15-by-20- foot screen. (AP) Quarterback Bill Cappleman twice found receivers in a driving rain for touchdown passes east night as Florida State slogged to a 24-0 fumble filled win over Wichita State.

Cappleman connected on scoring tosses to running back Tom Bailey for 53 yards and a nine- yarder to flanker Don Pederson. Wichita State set a team record for fumbles, losing 10 of 17 to the Seminoles. Their previous high was seven against Brigham Young, Florida State lost seven of 10 loose footballs to the Shockers. Florida State's other two scores came on a 40-yard field goal by place kicker Grant Guthrie and a splashing 18-yard run by Arthur Munroe. In the first quarter FSU got into Wichita territory when John Pell returned a Shocker punt to the Wichita 46.

Two plays later Cappleman (lobbed a 53 yard bomb to Bailey, who scampered along the sidelines to score. Wichita quarterback Butch Dusharm fumbled the first snap on Wichita's next series and FSU's Ron Wallace recovered at the Shocker 28. But the Seminoles' Brent Oilman bubbled the ball loose into the hands of Wichita's John Hoeheisel two plays later. FSU got possession ee plays later when Wichita's Kenny Lee fumbled and Barry Rice pounced on it for the Seminoles. The Tribe then marched to the Shocker 27 where Guthrie booted his 40-yard field goal to make it 10-0.

The final FSU score was set up by linebacker Steve Gildea who picked up a Shocker fumble before it hit the ground and raced to the Wichita 9. Then Cappleman hit Pederson in the end zone and Guthrie's kick left the Scoreboard reading 24-0. Cappleman connected on 12 of 17 pass attempts for 180 yards and was intercepted once. McCoy spoiled State Coach Dave Kragthorpe's home debut. LITTLE ROCK, Ark. Arkansas Quarterback Bill Montgomery, his passing a bit erratic, ran for three touchdowns as the No. 2-ranked Razorbacks ground out a 39-0 victory over Oklahoma State here yesterday.

Arkansas' rugged defense held the Cowboys to minus 19 yards rushing and 78 yards total offense. Montgomery, who guided Arkansas to a 10-1 season as a sophomore last year, scored on runs of 3, 3 and 7 yards. His second touchdown came with 13 seconds left in the first half and gave Arkansas a 19-0 lead. Tailback Bill Burnett, who has practiced only three days since Arkansas' Jan. 1 Sugar Bowl victory over Georgia, scored one touchdown and led all rushers with 121 yards on 20 carries.

Fullback Bruce Maxwell and backup quarterback John Eichler rounded out the scoring, Maxwell from three yards out and Eichler from six yards out in the third period. Montgomery, who passed for 1,595 yards last season, hit on 8 of 18 tosses for 85 yards. He suffered two interceptions. OSU's deepest push carried to the Arkansas 12 midway through the second quarter, but defensive halfback Jerry Moore broke up a pass on fourth and three. Maxwell, the bullish Arkansas bullback, averaged six yards per carry, going 11 times for 66 yards.

Endicott, a 5-11 185-pound soph omore who was given stellar protection, pitched two of his scoring bullseyes to wingback Watson and one to fullback Main during the early season surprise before 51,800. Main slammed a yard to a touchdown with the game only 2:24 old and tucked in a 31-yard pass at full speed crossing the goal line in the third quarter. OSU built its lead to 35-0 before quarterback Larry Lawrenc passed 25 yards to wingback Terry Reardon and sophomore Levi Mitchell sped two yards around left end for Iowa's touchdowns in the final period. (AP) -The high-powered Kansas City Chief who have virtualy forgotten the meaning of defeat, are favored to roll over Boston and spoil the Patriots' home debut under new head coach dive Rush today in an American Football League meeting at Boston College Stadium- The Chiefs, who swept through six exhibition games and then hit San Diego 27-9 in an AFL opener, are rated nearly a three touchdown choice over the Patriots, who are trying to rebuild. Led by Len Dawson, the AFL' all-time passing leader, Kansas City boasts a mighty attack. The Chiefs also have an awesome defense, with a front line which puts pressure on opposing quarterbacks and enables backs to pick off passes. Dawson, a 13-year pro from Purdue, cracked a bone in his right hand in the final pre-season game, but the injury didn't affect his passing against San Diego. He threw for two touchdowns.

Although still experiencing pain in the hand, Dawson is set to try to riddle Boston defenses. The Patriots, who have not beaten Kansas City since 1964, are hopeful of pulling off a major upset despite a 35-7 shellacking by the Broncos at Denver last Sunday. "We plan no major changes," Rush said. "We just hope to do some of the good things against Denver, avoid mistakes and hope for fewer bad breaks." Mike Taliaferro will start at quarterback for Boston. Taliaferro completed 19 of 34 passes against Denver, but he had four throws intercepted.

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) Husky Bob Anderson, Colorado's most exciting quarterback in years, got the Buffalos charging in the second half yesterday for a 35-14 football victory over a spunky Tulsa team. The blond signal-caller, who set a single season record in the Big Eight conference last year for over all offense, scored four of Colorado's five touchdowns and knocked off hefty chunks of yardage with his runs on keeper plays. The Tulsa Hurricanes soffed at the three touchdown odds against them to bounce from an 11 point deficit in second quarter and gain a 14-14 deadlock by halftime. Safety man Dave Moss raced 76 yards with a punt for one of the Tulsa touchdowns in this rally.

But the tie lasted just as long as it took Colorado to drive 73 yards as soon as it got the second half kickoff. Anderson threw only one short pass on the way, added runs of 10 and 21 yards on wide sweeps and went the last yards for the score. Safety Pat Murphy helped toward the Buffaloes fourth touchdown by staling a Tulsa pass the second time in the game and running 31 yards to the Hurricane 39. Sophomore 39. Sophomore Ron Rieger sped 30 yards around right end, then Anderson burst over center from three yards out.

Tulsa, refusing to wilt, traveled from its own 20 to the enemy 4 shortly after the last period began. But the Buff's forwards massed to stop red- haired Bill Robey, one yard short of the needed first down and that cancelled out the Hurricanes' last big chance.
