Schulze Plus Top Fielding KO's Amarillo Haney Homers In 1st Frame; Locals Sink Foe In Three Starts JACK DOUGLAS Herald Sports Editor AMARILLO, 6 (Spl) Living up to their name, the Big Spring Bombers blasted their way into the Shaughnessy playoff finals of the West Texas New Mexico league here last night, humbling the fourth place Amarillo Gold Sox for the third straight time. From the moment J. L. Haney, leadoff man for the Bombers, exploded a home run over the left- centerfield wall in the opening Inning, "there was little doubt that but that Big Spring was victory bound. Inability to hit in the clutches thing which won them a playoff the Sox a chance.

to prolong the series. -Buck Schulze, backed by superb fielding by his mates, held the Sox to nine scattered blows, always cooly pitching himself out of trouble. Haney slammed Decroo's second pitch over the left-center barrier, a distance of 365 feet, literally taking the life out of the 'Sox and some 2,000 fans. In the fourth frame Big Spring dealt the death blow to Amarillo when a triple, two singles and two walks, one intentional, combined Vince DiMaggio Homers As Bucs Best Cubs, 6-4. PITTSBURGH, Sept.

6 UP) Vlnce DiMaggio's nineteenth homer of the season with two out nnd Elbie Fletcher on second hase in the second Inning gave the Pittsburgh Pirates an early lead today as they defeated the Cubs 6 to 4. MONDAY ONUX I DRUG Douglass Hotel Bldg. 'Goteverthing" Right now, the only way Big Spring's foe for the league finals can be discovered Is by a smart bit of crystal-gazing.

Clovis and Borger are not giving a bit of help. Saturday night the Pioneers battled for 12 hard-innings before they were able to wind up the fracas with an 8 to 7 win over their visitors. Currently, the count is deadlocked at two-all, leaving the Bomber competition to be decided today. to give two runs. Again, the score was increased in the Hank Poitras singled, Pete Zmi- trovich sacrificed, Eddie Stevens flied out to Bus Dorman in right field, and Buck Schulze got.a hard blow to bring in Poitras.

Hayden Greer was credited with putting the Big Springers in good shape in the fourth as he displayed a fine bit of hit-stretching for a triple, taking 1 it in an almost too close play at third. Dick Ratliff, the one who gave Big Spring Its Thursday night. win, singled to drive in Greer. Ratliff advanced as Art Shillings singled moved up on Poitras' well-placed sacrifice boat. Zmitrovich was given a pass intentionally, bringing up' Stevens.

Hard luck was too much for walked In Ratliff. For a while in Amarillo's share of the fourth, things began to brighten for the outclassed host but a wrathy soul in the person of Pete Zmitrovich threw a monkey wrench into what at first seemed to be a run by Frank Hargrove. Hargrove had hit for a double well into rightfleld, advanced as Prather walked. Bus Dorman hit smartly and Hargrove headed for taking a too long peek at where the ball was heading. He circled widely around third base and charged toward the payoff.

But Dick. Ratliff had out the welcome sign for had again displayed his phenomenal throwing the ball from far in right field. Amarillo got 10 runners on bases, but did not know what to do with them when they landed there. The seventh stanza was the most disappointing from Amarillo's standpoint. Bill DeCarlo opened the threat with a base hit.

Bill Buchanan filed out to Mel Reeves at center field and Bias Tenorio hit safely into short right center. DeCroo struck out, bringing up Leon Cato, who connected for a base hit, scoring De Carlo. Joe D'Antonio strolled to load the bases. It was the picture of opportunity with Hargrove, ace slugger, strolling to bat. His cut sent Schulze's pitch zooming for the leftfleld wall.

Haney, the old game-saver, was off at the crack to sensationally spear the ball with only inches separating him from the fence. Groans of Sox fans rolled over the Panhandle like a wave of despair. Amarillo might as well have not come out for the ninth, for the team was whipped. Big Spring's three straight wins over Amarillo proved one tho Gold Sox were lucky to be In playoffs. Their luck played out.

Of course, none expects the boys to repeat as champion? of the loop, but if tha best happens, they may be the surprise team of the league. Even doleful Pat Murphy, coach, admitted at there was a faint glimmer of possibilities. At other times, well, Mr. Murphy rolls la his sleep.

In a nutshell, the thing the 1941 Steers must first beat is not the eenmy but awkwardness. Murphy and his aide, Mule Stockton, have never had a more willing bunch of lads. There are only three lettermen Kasch, Barton and Horace Bostick. But the team will average fair on weight and high on fight. Average weight is 162 1-2 pounds, and curiously enough this Is the average for the line and for the backfield.

Thus the line is a shade light. Billy Womack's 140 pounds pulls down the backfield average and Bostick is about four pounds under the mean figure. In Thursday's scrimmage, the Vander Meer Blanks Cards ST. LOUIS, Sept. 6 UP) The Cardinals didn't have a chance against Johnny Vander Meer's two-hit pitching today as they dropped a 2 to 0 decision to Cincinnati and fell two full games behind Brooklyn.

The shutout burned a big hole in the Cardinal pennant hopes as the Dodgers sailed further into the lead with a 4-1 victory over the Giants. Only a single by Johnny Hopp in the first inning and a double by Martin Marion in the fifth robbed Vander Meer, the only major league pitcher ever to hurl two successive hitless games, of his third no-hit performance. He struck out 14 Cardinal batters with his blazing fast ball and crackling curves, only three short the National league record set by Dizzy Dean against the Chicago Cubs in 1933. The major league strikeout record is 18 set by Bobby Feller. In hanging up his 14th victory of the year, Vander Meer pitched to only 32 men.

Jameson Favored To Repeat Golf Championship BRGGKLINE, Sept. 6 UP) Betty Jameson is a favorite to win her third straight women's National amateur golf championship, and she thinks that's the way it should be. The young San Antonio star, who has played less tournament golf this season than some of the others, is brimming with confidence in a. charming, modest way. "I'm hitting the ball better than I have all season," she said today after a practice round on the country club course, "and there's no reason why I haven't as much chance to win as I had the last two years, when I had less experience." Miss Jameson faces plenty of competition, however, as nearly all of the nation's top-flight women swingers are In the 45th title tournament opening here on Monday.

AMARILLO, Sept. e.

Big Spring's Bombers displayed fully during tho three-game series with Amarillo's Gold Sox in the first round of the Shaughnessy playoff for the West Texas-New Mexico league that, no matter what comes later, they are the champions of the lot. Wednesday and Thursday at Big Spring they showed the brand of ball that put them on top of the pennant evening at Amarillo they climaxed a bang-up showing by taking the opposition, 4 to 1, in such a manner that left even the most rabid Sox fans shaking their heads at the hometown lads' performance. Not that Amarillo looked bad just seemed to be out of their class. Some idea might be gained by the remark made by a youngster at the close of the Amarillo-Big Spring don't we get our money back now?" For truth, the lad might have had something there. But, Amarillo was up against something here Friday night Bubba Jonnard and his crew were up against a club that would not be denied.

It.might have been to their financial advantage to take part In a roundelay over a longer route, but Manager Jodie Tate's Bombers were but to whip the living daylights out of the opposition in the most direct manner. These Amarillo baseball crowds strongly resemble a crack tennis gallery. Putting It like it seemed to a stranger, especially one hailing from Big Spring, the Amarillo fans were a bit on the listless side Friday night. In one way they couldn't be blamed. From the opening gun, when J.

L. Haney, leadoff 'man for the Big Springers, connected with the second pitch of the game for a homer over the center field barrier, Amarillo was kept in the lurch by an airtight Big Spring game, plus a succession of bad a lack of any sort'of good break. Of course, in a few instances the Amarillo turnout broke loose when there was an indication that things might take a turn for the better so far as they were concerned. Keeping in the good old baseball tradition though, a few judicially scattered cushions and pop bottles were heaved in the direction of Umpires Capps and Rowland at the end of the game. Duke Etheridge, following up his job of officiating in both of the Bomber-Sox affairs at Big Spring, transferred his activities to Clovls Friday night.

It seems that Skipper Jonnard of the Sox did not feel that the Duke's presence in ihe Amarillo home grounds would be particularly conducive to the peace of mind of said Brother Jonnard. Jonnard will carry on in Amarillo during the coming winter. He is something of a classy car peddler and will pick up his change in that manner during the wintery months. Mrs. Jonnard, wife of the Sox pilot, tried various forms of the "wammie wammie" on Big Spring's Buck Schulze Friday night but the super-steady Bomber hurler, Missourian that he is, refused to be hex had the same effect on him as Amarillo's highly touted Speaking of giving Lady Luck the welcome sign, Bomber Haney has one of his own that seems to get bays at the moon to it, he says.

Piexy Tink Riviere has his own special way, too. The gentleman from the deep South of Texas takes a seat In the section reserved for the dusky fans when the going gets a bit edgy. Ira Thurman, hot Bomber fan and banker or golfer, take your choice, was on hand to see the Big Springers put the clincher on the first round of the playoff in Amarillo Friday. He was accomr panied by Mrs. Thurman and their daughter, Marijo.

Big Spring's Mayor Grover Dunham was also on the scene during the day but hied himself off to Pampa before the evening's festivities got under way. 6 The New York Yankees made their first appearance as the new champions of the American league today and were defeated without much effort by the Boston Red Sox, 8 to 1. The Red Sockers waded into the offerings of Marvin Breuer for three runs in the first Inning and finished with four runs off Steve Peek In the ninth. In between, Jim Tabor pounded a home run In the sixth inning. With this kind of an offensive Joe Dobson could have won about as he it pleased him to pitch a strong, seven-hit game which kept the Yankees scoreless after the first inning. The victory gave the Red Sox undisputed possession of second place again.

6 Dallas Rebels won their way into the Shaughnessy play-offs for the Texas league pennant tonight with a 3 to 2 victory over San Antonio due to Gordon Maltzberger's two-hit pitching and Nick Gregory's third- inning triple that scored two runs. Meanwhile the league-leading Houston Bucs defeated Fort Worth 4 to 3, to eliminate the Cats from the running for fourth place. Dallas took a two-game lead over the fifth-place Cats and the season ends tomorrow night with the Rebels playing San Antonio again. Brooks Stop Giants, 4-1, To Keep Lead BROOKLYN, Sept. 6 UP) The Brooklyn Dodgers, who underrated the New York Giants last Saturday and dropped a doubleheader to their rivals, made no mistake out a 4 to 1 victory that kept them on top of the National league.

Curt Davis produced another fine pitching performance to add to recent string, holding the Giants to nine scattered hits, and received potent support from Dolph Carailli and Pete Reiser. Brooklyn made only seven safeties off three New York pitchers, but Camilii collected his 30th home run of the season to start the Dodgers in the right direction and Reiser supplied a double and a triple. Manager Leo Durocher installed himself at shortstop for the game, to rest the light-hitting Peewee Reese, and used Lew Riggs Jim Wasdell in place of Cookie Lavagetto and Joe Medwlck to obtain additional lefthand hitting strength to oppose the Giants' starting hurler, Bill McGee.
