D8 The AHtom Republic Friday, March 20, Wicked Wild Things' as hot trashier just 2 reasons men like Oscars Supporting roles have new meaning I 1 4 'r 'aaL 1 as 'Body By Bob Fcnster Ths Arizona Republic Exactly how wild are these Mid Things? Considerably wilder than I thought they'd be. Neve Campbell has been care fully cutting loose from her TV moorings with the Scream series of sexy slasher flicks. But in Wild Things, she graduates with a big assist from Starship Troopers De-nise Richards to an adult steamer about sex, crime and the advisability of mistrust. Kelly (Richards), the richest girl in a rich Florida high school, is majoring in seduction, with her lures out for her hunky guidance counselor, Sam (Matt Dillon). Suzie (Campbell) is Kelly's enemy, swamp trash, a druggie who's leaning out over the deep end and threatening to leap.

But Suzie and Kelly find something in common: They were both raped by Sam or so they With a police 'detective (Kevin Bacon) trying to build the case and Kelly's wealthy mother (Theresa Russell) turning the town against him, Sam faces a professional and personal disaster, from which he sees no way out. But that's only the beginning of the wickedness in this devious little ditty that grows more twisted with every plot turn. It also grows kinkier, with Campbell and Richards getting wilder than you may expect and in a direction that some of their fans won't be able to handle. Wild Things isn't as sophisticated an erotic thriller as Body Heat, but it is as hot. Dillon and Bacon are as unpre- dictable as ever, which aids the plot twists as they take us back and forth across the cinematic line that sep-1, arates heroes and villains.

Bacon also produced the movie, so there is no degree of separation between him and Wild Things. If you find this movie offensive, take it up with him. Although Campbell and Richards id I Hfeffc By Jim Shea Hartford (Com.) Courarrt Men and women have different perspectives on the Academy Awards. Women watch for the glitz, the glamour, the gowns, the entertainment, the winners and losers, the drama. Men watch for just two reasons: Cleavage.

Men see the Academy Awards as the Super Bowl, the Wrestlemania, the Powerball jackpot of cleavage. Of course, if a woman questions a man about this, he will lie. Usually he will say he is watching because he has a deep, abiding interest in who wins the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. While men don't generally care about the Academy Awards, they do care sometimes passionately about who wins in certain catego- ries. For example: Who do men favor for Best Supporting Actress? Kim Basinger.

Why? Two reasons. Who do men favor for Best Supporting Actor? Burt Reynolds. Why? Because if Burt wins, they will show additional clips from Boogie Nights. And if they show additional clips from Boogie Nights, there is a good possibility of catching some bonus you-know-what. Another thing men tend to do is tune in to the Academy Awards early.

The attraction? The full-contact decolletage. Over the past several years, cleavage has become an all-out Associated Press last year's Oscars? Oh, never mind. Best supported cleavage. Best unsupported cleavage. Foreign cleavage.

Original cleavage. Adapted cleavage (this could go here, or be included in the science and technology segment). Live-action cleavage. Animated cleavage (most likely would go to a Fran Drescher type). Short subjects.

Set decoration (include such variables as jewelry and tattoos). Special effects (think in terms of stunt cleavage). Lifetime cleavage (awarded to someone who has contributed a distinguished body of cleavage over the years). Have to figure Liz Taylor would be a sentimental favorite here. And the envelope, please.

Their characters are supposed to be 18, but both actresses come on strong: playing with the Lolita syndrome while exhibiting the style of a wet T-shirt contest.

However, if you think the most erotic sex scene belongs to either young actress, you're forgetting that Russell is in the cast. Or you may be too young to have seen what she can do. Anyway. Perhaps the time has come to make this annual bosom bake-off an official part of the ceremonies. It would be great television: Excited winners. Rambling speeches. A cute little statuette called "The Chasm." As an experiment, I propose that readers watching this year's show pencil in their favorites in these categories: Best cleavage.

Director John McNaughton (Mad Dog and Glory) pumps the story at a rapid clip, which helps skate over the implausibility of the schemes. He's heavy-handed with the erotica, but that fits the movie solidly into its trashy environs. Several plot twists are given away far too early in the movie's previews. So, if you want to enjoy the crime story in addition to the stars, don't watch the previews or the movie ads on TV. Wild Things isn't a first-ratfe crime story.

But it is a kicky little thriller and just the thing for a night of slumming, Wild Things is rated for profanity, sex, nudity and violence. It comes close to an NC-17, slightly tamer than Boogie Nights.
