The business had more than 100,000 tons of plastic products at the one-acre site, which produced an intense heat when it burned. Seventy-five firefighters responded to the blaze, which they managed to confine to the one business in the industrial area. )xm. urn Mike RynearsorvThe Arizona Republic McDowell Rd.

Officers later searched the home for dynamite, but came up empty, Brown said. Investigators believe people at the home may have been tipped off about the raid. The search was an outgrowth of another operation on Saturday in which Glendale police found 84 sticks of dynamite at a home in the 6400 block of West Mescal Street. Police obtained a search warrant for Carnesi's home after a confidential informer told officers that more dynamite was stashed at Carnesi's residence, Brown said. Three people found at the mobile home, two men and a woman, were detained Tuesday for questioning but later released, Brown said.

Earlier this year, Carnesi was charged with possession of dangerous drugs after Glendale police said they discovered methamphet-amine, an illegal drug, at his home. On July 29, he pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of possession of drug paraphernalia and was to have been sentenced next week in Maricopa County Superior Court. Brown described Carnesi as a known associate of members of the Aryan Brotherhood, a prison gang. 1 PHOENIX lit. f' hi Map By Christina Leonard and Timothy Tart The Arizona Republic Firefighters worked late into the night Wednesday trying to extinguish an enormous fire at a family-owned central Phoenix plastic-recycling business.

Plastic Recovery Industries was destroyed, fire officials said, and the family did not have fire insurance. "The things is, they're a family business, and this is all they have," said Caeser Tima-Chavez, who spoke for the family. "They're devastated They keep blaming it on aison. We just think that it is ironic that this should happen now." Tima-Chavez had been negotiating with the owners, the Warshawsky family, to buy the business, which he estimated had more than 100,000 tons of plastic products on the one-acre site. The family has been in the business for 40 years, but only about three at the current location in the 1800 block of West Linden Street.

Family members declined to com- Lindens Site of fire scene Wednesday night, but Oliver said it was too early to guess whether arson was the cause of the blaze. Damage to neighboring buildings in this industrial park was minimal, but Corbin-Dykes Electric just north of the blaze, sustained fire damage to the attic. "We saved all of the buildings around that was our main mission," firefighter John Kanter said. "The main tiling is that no one was hurt, and we didn't lose any other buildings or cars." Front-end loaders were brought to the scene late Wednesday to break up the boxes and piles of plastics in an effort to extinguish the flames. The fire was largely contained by 8 p.m.

extreme heat and windy conditions, which carried smoke across downtown. "It was a huge fire, hot, very intense," Phoenix Chief Robert Oliver said. "Plastic burns very hot." About 75 firefighters were called to the scene. "There was so much fire and smoke that it was hard to see what we had when we got here," Capt. John Mure said.

"Pulling out of the station, we could see the smoke, and when we got here it was just all blacked out." Fire officials believe the fire began outside, where boxes, pipes and other material were stored. The building contained mostly equipment, Oliver said. Investigators were called to the ment Wednesday night. Tima-Chavez had planned on expanding the plant, but those plans are stalled. He also says the fire is suspicious.

"This is the last straw of a chain of events that add up to something like this happening," he said, adding that fire investigators have visited the facility in the past and found no problems. The fire broke out about 6 p.m. and quickly spread throughout the buildings in the area, collapsing the roof and several walls of the red-brick building, which was built in the late 1960s. Firefighters were having a hard time battling the blaze because of the Fillmore St. Van Buren St.
