KMLE (107.9) Country. AM RADIO CHARLIE VAN DYKE Correspondent Camel are fun-loving on the air, but neither station welcomes newcomers trying to win some ribbons at the radio rodeo. Trying to beat these two established country casters is a little like trying to jump over an elephant. But that doesn't really matter today, because birthdays are always filled with excitement and hope. Young Buck joins a group of other Valley siblings who are known in the industry as "move-ins." They are stations that don't sit atop South Mountain, broadcasting farther than you can see from the base of their towers.

Some of these new kids were originally in other cities and towns and primarily designed to serve a small community. With new government regulations, many of these stations have been able to move their transmitters closer to Phoenix. A recent report underscores the health of business in Valley radio. Nationally ranked by size at No. 20, Phoenix comes in at No.

17 in rank for radio advertising revenue. That's enough motivation for a number of these stations to load the wagons and take their shows as close as they can get to the big city. The latest radio ratings will be released soon. That tells us in what order the elephant line up and which one gets the best view. It was announced Thursday that Scottsdale Wireless had entered into a five-year LMA with New Century Arizona, which operates three stations here: KGME (1360 AM), the Edge (KEDJ, 106.3 FM) and KHOT (100.3 FM). New Century president Michael O'Shea says the group will provide programming and take care of commercial sales. 10,000 songs in a row Hitting the air yesterday as Young Buck Country, KXLL will change call letters soon to KBUQ to reflect the moniker. Promoted as "A fresher cut of country music," the station kicked off the format, geared to younger country music fans, with 10,000 songs in a row without commercials or disc jockeys. When the countdown ends (in about a month), the first commercial to air will have been sold at auction to the highest bidder with all the money going to the YWCA.

A good guess is that the former KSLX (100.7 FM) morning pair, David K. Jones and Bob Boze Bell, will do the sunrise shift once the cavalcade of continual country ends. David and the Goliaths? Young Buck is attempting to compete in the same arena as super successful country stations KNIX (102.5 FM) and Camel Country 108 (KMLE 107.9 FM). KNIX and A radio station was born this week in the Valley, a very unusual event in a market the size of Phoenix. KXLL (105.9 FM) officially signed on for the first time Friday at 5 p.m.

Only hours, old now, it already has a long history. Valley residents Katharine Klein and Randy Baca own Scottsdale Talking Machine and Wireless Co. which set out to put the new station on the air 1 6 years ago. A complicated series of legal and logistical delays only made the local dreamers more determined. Actually licensed to Paradise Valley, some thought the station would never make it to air because of the conundrum of where to place a tower.

You may recall that at one time, there was a plan to put the transmitter on a Paradise Valley mountainside. Disney designers would create a fake cactus to aesthetically cover the structure, complete with prefabricated flowers that could be added or removed to reflect the desert seasons. That didn't get very far. But the company had the talents of Elliott Klein to draw upon. Klein, an internationally respected broadcast engineer, ultimately found a location in Fountain Hills that could work given all the government restrictions on the planned station's tower site.

A number of readers contacted me this week when they heard the station testing out its transmitter. Children's video is by 'Rent' writers Washington Post While the late Jonathan Larson was working on his Tony-winning musical Rent, he and Bob Golden put together eight original songs and a wonderful children's sing-along video, Away We Go. Larson died of an aneurysm at age 35 after a dress rehearsal for Rent. He later was named the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for drama as well as the Tony. Larson, like Golden, had composed for Sesame Street.

He had also worked with other children's TV programs and had written Blocks, a musical for kids. Awav We Go, which Larson directed, is a musical journey through New York City. Newi the Newi and his friends sail past the Statue of Liberty on a ferry, take a cab down Broadway, ride a bus and ftv on a 727 jet, sineing amid the si'ehts (30 minutes, phone 800-221-8180). The station is so new, it's not known yet how far it broadcasts. It's not one of the high-power South Mountain facilities, so 105.9 has surprised many with the distance it reaches.

In fact, if you check it out, let me know how well you get the signal in your part of the Valley. But there's more to the story. By the time the station was ready to roll, the broadcasting business environment had changed. It no longer made economic sense to try to operate the station as a stand-alone facility among all the multistation operations in the Valley. That's when the owners decided to take advantage of an FCC option called Local Marketing Agreement.
