Varney a noted Arizona architect who left his mark on some of the Valley's most prominent government, industrial and recreational facilities, has died at age 83, his family said.

Mr. Varney died June "25 of congestive heart failure at his Phoe-, nix home, which was featured in the May 1952 issue of Arizona Highways magazine. The projects designed by Mr. Varney and his firm range from the" Arizona Capitol's executive tower and the original Sun Devil Stadium to the Ramada Valley Ho Resort and the Motorola Government Electronics Division factory, both in Scottsdale. 1 His design for Monterey Park Grade School in central Phoenix became the prototype for many Valley elementary schools, said daughter Lisa Varney Rice, a landscape architect in Cave Creek.

School construction figured prominently for the firm, mirronn Arizona's rapid population expan sion after World War II. "We got involved with school projects not only in Maricopa County but all over the state from the elementary level to high schools and junior colleges and up to ASU," business partner Khin Aye said. Mr. Varney, who was born Oct. 11, 1914, in Alameda, attended the University of Southern California before transferring to the University of California at Berkeley, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in architecture.

He arrived in Phoenix in 1938 and accepted a position as a draftsman on the first addition to the Capitol. In 1941, he founded Edward L. Varney Associates, which now is called Varney Sexton Lunsford Aye, Architects Planners. Other projects designed by Varney and his firm either originally or as renovations include the old Phoenix City Hall, the Maricopa County court complex, Phoenix Memorial Hospital, St Luke's Hospital, Perryville prison and the Life Sciences Center and Farmer Education building at ASU. Mr.

Varney also designed buildings at the Phoenix, Paradise Valley and Moon Valley country clubs, along with the original buildings at Glendale Community College, Pres-cott College and Cochise Community College. He retired in 1985. Mr. Varney is survived by his wife, Rosemarie; three sons; three daughters; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister. Whitney and Murphy Arcadia Funeral Home of Phoenix handled arrangements.

A private memorial service is planned July 25. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the ASU Foundation, E.L. Varney Scholarship, co Director, ASU School of Architecture, P.O. Box 871605, Tempe AZ 85287-1605. Funeral Announcements PHYLLIS HAMMOND KEIFFER Phyllis M.
