Toast to a runaway success THE GOOD DROP HUON HOOKE restored homestead Cawarra Dr Lindeman an English surgeon and his wife Eliza bought land and settled near Gresford in 1842 The first vines were planted on the Cawarra vineyard in 1843 The Lindemans started exporting in 1858 an activity which is stronger than ever today: Lindemans now exports 25 per cent of its production Cawarra Claret still made today although not from that vineyard was the first wine to be despatched overseas Today Lindemans claims Bin 65 Chardonnay is Australia's biggest white wine export The Lindeman family long ago sold the company which is now owned by South Australian Brewing Holdings as part of the Penfolds group But it remains Australian owned Vines no longer grow at Cawarra now a 1000-hectare cattle property Descendants of Dr Lindeman still live there and the original buildings wine cellars sheds and homestead are much as they were in his day Lindemans' modern show success is astonishing Out of the past 35 capital city wine shows in Australia during the past six years Lindemans has been named successful 33 times THIS year looks set to be the year of Lindemans The company is on a roll at present winning the successful trophy regularly in capital city wine shows The S6-S7 Lindemans Bin 65 Chardonnay is setting the local market ablaze hot on the heels of its phenomenal success in the US and Britain And to top it off 1993 is the 150th anniversary brand manager Jane Willson recently outlined some of the surprises in store for 1993 A new white wine will be released next month To be labelled Lindemans Classic Dry White it will be a sophisticated Bordeaux-style sourced mainly from Padthaway in the south-east of South Australia unlikely to be expensive A commemorative magnum of Coona-warra cabernet sauvignon from the outstanding 1990 vintage blended by Lindemans Coonawarra winemaker Greg Clayfield will be released This will be a limited edition once-only offer Don't expect it to be inexpensive! As well there will be a release of wines: cellar-aged Lindemans Hunter Valley Coonawarra and Padthaway whites and reds of great character normally a Classic release every two years so this is not really a sesquicente-nary event although it will probably generate more interest because of the date The 1993 release will take place next month and will include such greats as the 1970 Lindemans Hunter River Chablis Bin 3875 which has been winning awards for 20 years Some of the first Coonawarra Pyrus the Jimmy Watson-winning 1985 will also be available In May there will be a thanksgiving service at St Anglican Church in Gresford in the Hunter Valley followed by morning tea on the lawns of Dr Allocated pensions get a reprieve It pays to wait for the lead to come to you DOLLAR SENSE PETER FREEMAN BRIDGE PAUL MARSTON If you think these plays are difficult so too do some of the best players in the country In the 1983 test between Australia and New Zealand which Australia narrowly lost Australian players let three contracts make by failing to cover 10s in situations similar to that above But you routinely cover every' honour in sight You should try to think each case through South opens 1NT and North raises to 3NT You lead the queen of hearts Declarer takes the king in hand and plays the ace of diamonds dropping nine and continues with the jack What do you do? To defend well you have to get the most out of your honours One good way of doing this is to avoid leading out your honours and wait for the lead to come to you Also when they lead an honour a good idea to cover with a higher honour thereby taking two for the price of one For example: Q6 9854 K32 AJ107 If declarer leads the queen from dummy some frugal souls might meanly contribute the two but that would be a mistake On the next round the six goes to the jack and the ace drops the king making four tricks for declarer If East covers the queen with the king however declarer only makes three tricks Tens should also be covered but these situations can be NORTH A J84 A7 K87653 A J2 WEST EAST A 63 A Q10952 1 084 652 Q1042 9 A K7 A A864 SOUTH A AK7 K93 AJ A Q10953 Declarer took the king and continued with the eight to force out the 10 and establish the suit with the ace of hearts still in dummy as an entry In all declarer took five diamonds two spades and two hearts But look what happens if you duck the jack of diamonds Declarer might play low in dummy and the jack wins (playing the king help) Now lack of entries to dummy prevents declarer from taking more than three diamond tricks Declarer might lead a club but the defence wins and clears the ace of hearts leaving declarer one short Well done if you decided to duck the jack PENSIONERS and prospective pensioners interested in making use of allocated (or cashback) pensions received welcome news in the dying days of 1992 The Senate rejected the Federal proposed social security treatment of allocated pensions when the Opposition and Australian Democrats joined forces to outvote the Government Allocated pensions which were given the go-ahead by the Government six months ago can be bought with superannuation savings While some promoters have exaggerated their usefulness they nevertheless have the potential to give investors a valuable combination of tax-effective income and investment flexibility One big drawback was that the Government wanted to apply harsh income test rules to such pensions This plan has been halted at least temporarily Under this proposal income from an allocated pension for the purposes of the income test would be calculated by multiplying the balance in the pension account by the earning rate of the fund over the previous 12 months As the rule now stands a 65-vear-old investor with $200000 invested in an allocated pension and receiving a pension of say $15000 would generally have only $5000 of the pension assessed against the income test because part of the payment would be treated as a return of capital If the harsher rules applied and if the allocated pension had an earnings rate of 8 per cent (that is the rate the fund manager was able to earn on the money invested) then income for the purposes of the income test would be $16000 Mr Ross Bowden of Retirelnvest said such a test would mean many people would suffer a massive loss of pension Allocated pensions would be much more harshly treated than a similar product the life annuity Mr Bowden said the deferral meant that up to 4000 Australians who had invested in allocated pensions would not have their social security entitlements affected People considering investing in an allocated pension could do so knowing that they would be assessed on a similar basis to that which applies to annuities The deferral of the new pension eligibility rules for allocated pensions will mean they will continue to be exempt from the assets test Only that part of the pension payment in excess of the tax-free amount will count towards the income test This will apply at least until October 1 1993 with the matter referred for review to the Senate Select Committee on Superannuation However Mr Bowden said it was likely that the exemption of allocated pensions from the assets test would be discontinued Peter Freeman is the editor of the Sydney Morning weekly Money and Executive Money sections and author of In Your Interest: A Guide to Making and Managing Money DUMMY A J84 A7 K87653 A 32 YOU EAST A 63 QJ1084 Q1042 AK7 SOUTH RESULTS: Grand Slam: Humphrey Miller Bray Taylor Walsh Spencer Elstone Syphers Chatswood: Blanket Kay Tosh Denton Visser Hilton Stuart Green Declarer leads the 10 from dummy If East plays low declarer makes three tricks in the suit but if East kills the 10 with the king declarer only makes two tricks the seven losing to the eight When the hand came up West thought he knew what to do He quickly covered the jack with the queen but that was no good A NEW YEAR!
