To 30 Sept. BUFF'S CHOICE PAUL HARRIS Star Wars (1977) Tonight, 8.30 pm, Channel 10 Supposedly based on the memories of director George Lucas, of his errant childhood spent at Saturday matinees watching serials, this space western takes the science out of science fiction. It plays up the fantastic and mythological elements with a generous sampling of special effects, technological hardware, the almost complete absence of sex, minimal violence, and backed up by John Williams' relentlessly pounding score. It's an antiseptic and simplistically conceived galaxy through which Lucas manoeuvres his human and android cast, presumably a deliberate artistic strategy designed to reach the widest possible audience without causing either offence or undue mental stimulation. Chinatown (1974) Sunday, 7.30 pm, Valhalla As the old blues song says, "it's a mean old scene when it comes to double crossing which just about sums up the labyrinthine twists within Robert Towne's private eye scenario, set in Los Angeles circa 1937.

As J.T. Gittes, Jack Nicholson exudes charisma, looks cool and acts tense. Faye Dunaway, portraying the poor-little-rich-girl, turns in a full-blooded performance before she descends into selfparody. Director Roman Polanski captures an ambiguous sense of futility and bleakness that gives a melancholy resonance to the greed and corruption that is central to this "mythological history" of Los Angeles. Following, at 9.50 pm, is 'The Two Jakes' (1990), the 'Chinatown' sequel.

Pick-up on South Street (1953) Tuesday, 7.50 pm, Prince Philip Theatre, Melbourne University A low-life pickpocket and "threetime loser" (Richard Widmark) lifts a wallet on a crowded New York subway train and discovers that it contains atomic secrets. He may well be a dirty low rat but he is no "commie even if he is prepared to exploit the superpower rivalries for the precious microfilm. Samuel Fuller's trademark blend of visual boldness, emotional sensitivity and explosive violence is much in evidence. Thelma Ritter's support role as Moe, the old woman who peddles ties and information, is a gem. With Jean Peters and Richard Kiley. Screens with, at 9.30 pm, 'House of Bamboo' (see preview below).

The King and I (1955) Trak The Rodgers and Hammerstein team set this popular musical in 19th-Century Siam but the exotic milieu is a setting for Broadway show tunes in the sentimental operetta tradition. Yul Brynner, as the imperious king, repeats his stage performance and Deborah Kerr, dubbed by Marni Dixon, is the epitome of the genteel English governess recruited to teach Yul's brood. Director Walter Lang, an old hand at Fox musicals, wisely emphasises the visual pageantry and films the musical set-pieces with a flair that is absent from his final work in the genre, the dire 'Can Can'. This is a new print in Dolby stereo imported for the season. MAKERS MARK, 85 Collins St.

10 Faye Dunaway: self-parody. House of Bamboo (1955) Tuesday, 9.30 pm, Prince Philip Theatre, Melbourne University The American occupation of Japan after World War II provides a background for Samuel Fuller's reworking of the 1940s film noir thriller, 'The Street With No Name'.
