pHCK IF TDflE BR Fleming got the credit, but it was Florey's 'miracle' DISCOVERY On 2 at 8 pm. jiff the idea of large-scale penicillin production, the British drug companies were apathetic. He was forced to hot-foot it to America, where he finally struck it lucky. Factory production started and by 1944 there was enough penicillin to treat every soldier wounded in the D-Day landings. One of the features of tonight's program is the black and white footage.

Some of it is rare archive film, such as the film taken by Florey in Africa of the first penicillin given to soldiers wounded in the field. Whoever would have believed that a documentary about mould could make such fascinating television? Bronwvn Watson Tlil Rl IS only so much one can say about mould. It grows on tomato paste. And bread. And jam.

And oranges. And shoes. We are surrounded by it. But it can lso be made into one of the world's, most miraculous drugs penicillin. As an primary school child wiil tell you.

penicillin was discovered in vi hen. quite by chance, some mould spores wafted in through an open window in Alexander leming's I ondon laboratory. I he mould happened to land on a plate where some microbes, were growing. The mruld killed the microbe- and the re-t is history. (VnieiHin was discovered and icm- The man who should have been given more credit for the discovery was Howard Florey rough, tough Australian" from Adelaide).

It was fie, with his team of scientists From Oxford University. England, who transformed a mere bit of mould into one of the world's greatest drugs. It was Florey who took a huge risk by attempting to produce enough penicillin to treat people. Florey's operation wasn't, however, a fancy-one. He used bedpans, biscuit tins and old dairy equipment to grow the precious mould juice.

It was also Florey who recognised the impact that penicillin could have on the outcome of World War II. However, when Florev tried to sell ing became a world hero. But. according to tonight's documentary. 77rc Mmihl.

71ie Myth and The Microbe, part of the DiM-ovcry series, that story is just an attractive piece of folklore. The truth is. if it had been left to I ieming. penicillin would never have been discovered because he failed to recognise its tifesavine capabilities. He lo-t interest eight years before penicillin's potential was finally realised.

And those who did the crucial work remain forgotten. sWa -RT- mLL i IiOrd Florey risk-taker who made penicillin possibk'.
