D2 The Arizona Republic Thursday, July 28, 1994 On The Air Super shot: a closer 3-pointer? Carlton staging family no-show 1 plans to angle himself near the television so he can watch the ceremony from the corner of his eye on a delayed broadcast at midnight Sunday. "For some reason a wall has been built up between us," said Joseph, whose home is filled with old photos of his son. "Whatever it is, he has never come, to me about it." The pitcher's older sister, Joanne Garrard, said her brother hasn't acknowledged her son's death 4Vi years ago, if he knows about it. "Dad is proud of Steve," she said. "And too, as a baseball player.

But not as a brother and not as a son to Joseph and Anne Carlton." Phillies spokesman Larry Shenk said the pitcher was "livid" about the Daily News story and would not comment. Brazilians' Cup rtfnneth over at customs Along with their World Cup trophy, Brazil's soccer players brought home 14 tons of consumer goods. And they don't want to pay customs duties. The failure of Brazil's soccer team to pay up to $1 million in duties on items bought in America during the World Cup has triggered a government scandal. Osiret Lopes Filho, the nation's tax chief quit last week after President Itamar Franco overruled his order to inspect the team luggage.

Among the items brought in were microwave ovens, washing machines, computers, printers, TVs, refrigerators, a barbecue set and a leather saddle so much stuff that the team plane took off hours late, delaying victory parades. When customs agents stopped the luggage, star forward Romario and his teammates reportedly threatened to boycott the victory parades. "We didn't smuggle anything," Romario told the Rio daily Globo. "We represented Brazil before two billion people around the world. If they don't release my luggage, I'm giving back my medal." Brazilian law permits citizens to bring home $500 worth of items purchased abroad duty-free.

"The law has to be respected by everyone, otherwise our work is discredited," said Lopes Filho, who has clashed frequently with soccer officials and players over their failure to pay taxes on their large incomes. Lopes Filho, a key figure in the government's drive to boost tax collection and wipe out a chronic state deficit, has been nailed in the press as the "real hero" in a country where ethics and politics rarely mix. Joseph Carlton won't be joining the celebration in Cooperstown, N.Y., Sunday when his only son, Steve, is inducted into the Hall of Fame. The elder Carlton, estranged from his son for years, said he wasn't invited. Steve Carlton's ailing mother and two sisters were excluded, too, he said.

"I am proud and fond of Steve. Hove him," the Steve Carlton 87-year-old father told The Philadelphia Daily News in his Miami home. "But I am also disappointed in him." The elder Carlton, legally blind but with some peripheral vision, said he good college players, but they probably won't play in the NBA." 2nd time around The Hamilton Tiger-Cats are either real dumb, real nice or they enjoy a good joke. They're giving Dennis K.C. Park a second chance.

Park will try again to sing Canada, before their Canadian Football League game against Ottawa tonight. Park sparked a controversy when his version of the Canadian national anthem before the Las Vegas Posse's game against Saskatchewan on July 16 sounded more like Christmas Tree. Voice of respect Seattle slugger Ken Griffey Jr. on reliever Goose Gossage: "I know I always go over and listen to anything he has to say. You have to respect the man.

He's been in every kind of situation that most everyone in this clubhouse has only dreamed of." Some awful Angels Angels in the outfield? They sure aren't on the mound. And yet, California Manager Marcel Lachemann, a week ago, was comparing starter Phil Leftwich to Catfish Hunter while all those around him tried to keep a straight face. The Angels lost their sixth straight, 1 1-3, Wednesday and are -18-games under .500. Is that what Angels brass want to hear? What a shock it must be for reporters after Buck Rodgers' straight talk. M9M) 7:30 C()bras At 20 feet, 6 inches, the three-point arc in international basketball is so close to the hoop it makes Dan Majerle nervous. "The closer I get, the worse I get," he said. "So I want to be back as far as possible." If the NBA ever creates a four-point shot, no team will ever beat the Suns in Majerle's pro lifetime. There's no four-pointer being contemplated, but many pro hoop thinkers may want to move the stripe closer. They might even do it by next season.

A fair amount depends on how Dream Team II exploits the trey in the world basketball championships Aug. 4-14 in Toronto. "I've always advocated the three be moved closer," Dream Coach Don Nelson said. "It would make defenses more aggressive, which would open up the drive. Hopefully it would be a step in eliminating illegal defenses." The shorter three also has the endorsement of the NBA's director of operations, Rod Thorn.

"There's too much contact way too much contact," Thorn said. "Hand-checking is first up. We'll be doing something about that for next season. "It's hard to get to the hoop in our league. Medium-range jump shooters, guys who come off picks, catch and shoot, are gone.

What small forwards these days can catch the ball, dribble three times and beat a man to the hoop? Scottie Pippen, Dominique Wilkins that's about it. "Colleges now play so much of a passing game, where big guys are allowed only to screen guys across the lanes. They can't handle the ball because their coaches don't want them to. Colleges have real small guards who handle the ball all the time. They're Mark McGwire Leroy Irvin First baseman goes Former Ram back to Oakland for charged with heel examination.

F1FY I0ECOI The Arizona Republic Cardinals win over media flock Amid their many frustrations last year, some Cardinals officials were miffed when the team's flagship radio station preempted the weekly show featuring then-coach Joe Bugel for news of the Suns signing free agent A.C. Green. Never mind that the Green story was a big one nor that Bugel's comments generally were limited to putting a positive spin on a bad situation; the Cardinals felt slighted.

Now, however, these same people are reveling in all the hype surrounding the Cardinals and their new coach and general manager, Buddy Ryan. Which again proves what should be obvious to anyone, regardless of their affiliation or agenda: Make news, and people will pay attention. Win games, or provide the perception that you are going to win games, and readers, viewers and listeners will take note. The hiring of Ryan in January was big news. Part of the story was the prospect of a moribund franchise suddenly becoming a winner.

The Cardinals ever since have been a hot story. Interest has replaced apathy. For the first time, the Suns might not be the only professional game in town. So much is new and different about the team, including its radio station. After six years on KTAR (620), the Cardinals jumped to KEZ (99.9).

Additionally, other broadcast outlets are beefing up their coverage. Here's what's in store: Channel 3 The broadcast partner of KEZ (both are owned by Media America) will air all four preseason games, as usual. Two live and two on tape. The new KEZ team of Bill Wilkerson and John Mistier will simulcast the games on radio and TV. Channel 3 will air the Monday Night Cardinal Report, hosted by Mike Chamberlin, and 77ie Buddy Ryan Show, hosted by Gil Tyree, on Sunday mornings.

KEZ Tyree will host the weekly Buddy Ryan call-in show Tuesday nights (which will also be aired in Philadelphia and maybe Chicago). A sportswriters roundtable that will follow is planned. The busy Tyree also will host the two-hour pre-game and post-game shows, as well as provide daily reports during morning and afternoon drive time. KTAR The former Cardinals radio station will provide at least as much coverage as it did last year, except for the games. Linebacker Seth Joyner will do a weekly show on Wednesdays during the 620 Sportsline with Brad Cesmat.

Quarterback Steve Beuerlcin will appear on Friday mornings to preview the upcoming game and be an occasional guest on the Sportsline. Center Ed Cunningham will host a call-in show following CBS radio's Monday Night Football broadcast. There also will be extensive pre-game and post-game programming, featuring the KTAR sports staff and Joyner, Beuerlcin $rtd Cunningham, as part of the tentatively-scheduled, eight-hour Sunday NFL coverage. I KGME (1360) The Valley's only 411-sports radio station has signed linebacker grip Hill to participate in a Tuesday night, Hour-long program. Plans are in the works to include linebackers Garth Jax and David Merritt in Cardinals-related programming.

The station has contracted with the Buffalo piljs, Los Angeles Rams and the Mutual Game of the Week, but intends to include a jivo, Cardinals pre-game show, plus a osi-game show, as part of its Sunday NFL adage. Other radio stations, such as KDKB 933), which has sort of a pre-game show, will also have Cardinals stuff. On TV, the Channel 10 Sunday night program Sports fx(ra will cover the Cardinals but not be as jieavily-focused on the team as it was last year. The station is still a CBS affiliate and CBS, as everyone knows, lost its NFL rights Io (he Fox Network. The Sunday night Spdrts Tonight on Channel 12 also will look that day's Cardinals game.

Several other including New York, Washington, D.C. and Boston, also had poor ratings. Channel 3 Program Director Sue Schwartz, who made the change, said future gaifres will be determined on an individual baits. Earlier, she had submitted a list of 'preferred" teams, headed by the Cubs. And will the remaining games, all set for Saturday nights, be shown live? I am not ready to commit to that yet," she said.
