Forward Danny Manning traveled with the club but did not play for the second straight game because of pain in his left leg. "I'm feeling a lot better," said Manning, who nine days ago irritated scar tissue from major surgery on the knee. By Norm Frauenhelm The Arizona Republic DALLAS Danny Ainge's satisfaction Sunday with the Suns' overtime victory over the Mavericks did not mollify his anger at NBA official Monty McCutchen. McCutchen charged Ainge with two technical fouls, an automatic ejection, in the second quarter of the Suns' 109-108 victory. Ainge followed McCutchen out onto the floor and pointed a finger at him.

For that action, he is subject to fine beyond the standard one for appear in an NBA regular-season game when he took the floor with four minutes left in the first half. "I was nervous," said Llamas, a former Grand Canyon University player who had two points and one rebound. Llamas' parents, Horacio and Anna Louise, were in the stands. They made the trip to Dallas from Llamas' hometown in Rosario, which is near Mazatlan. Ainge said Llamas' performance will earn him a second 10-day contract.

His first 10-day deal expired Sunday. No guts, no deal Ainge on the controversial nine-player trade that new Dallas General Manager Don Nelson engineered with New Jersey: "I'm one of the few people who didn't think the trade was that bad. But I might not have had to guts to do it." "Those guys have way too much power," Ainge said after the first ejection of his head-coaching career. "I wanted an explanation for the Ps.

He just turned around and walked away from me. "I was owed an explanation." NBA first Suns center Horacio Llamas became the first Mexican-born player to Bryant, who finished with 16 points and seven rebounds. Seconds later, Rex Chapman's three-point goal provided the Suns with another lead. Not until Mavericks guard Derek Harper made a 20-foot shot with 8.6 seconds left did the Suns' chances suddenly look in doubt. They trailed by one.

But that's when their day was saved by Kidd, fittingly enough. Kidd was making his first return to Reunion Arena since he was traded to Phoenix for Michael Finley and A.C Green. He was the designated villain. But in the game's final play, he beat his old club. He took a pass from KJ at the three-point line.

He drove into the lane. As he did, he drew Green away from his defensive posture on Tisdale to the right of the basket. Actually, the shot, in part, was the result of some defensive tactics. KJ and Kidd were sharing the ballhan-dling duties.

Former University of Arizona guard KhalicJ Reeves was the key. "If Reeves was on me, I was the ballhandler," said KJ, who had 22 points and 10 assists. "If he was on Jason, it was Jason's job. That's just because Derek Harper has been around for so long as a great defensive player. "Anyway, Reeves was on Jason at the end.

I was going to try to score on the drive. But I tossed the ball to Jason, and everything fell into place." It sure did. Ainge lost his seat on the bench in the second quarter when he was charged with two technical fouls, an automatic ejection.

After his club's victory, he emerged from the locker room looking like a kid who had seen it all. "We started slowly, then we hit a couple of threes and our energy level and confidence got going," said Ainge, whom referee Monty McCutchen ejected, apparently without an explanation, at 3:11 of the second quarter. "Then they got conservative. Then we got conservative. That kind of thing happens all the time in the NBA." But it happenes here, there and elsewhere.

It's not often that all of it seems to happen within one game. For three quarters, it appeared that the Suns were headed for another embarrassing loss to the Mavericks. Before tip-off, there had been some vows among the Suns that they would avenge the collapse in a loss to Dallas a week ago at America West Arena. But at halftime, the Mavericks, led by center Shawn Bradley and forward Martin Muursepp, held a 17-point 'advantage. The margin grew to 27 in the third quarter.

"Everything was bad," said Ainge, whose club is now 1-5 in overtime games, 1-16 when behind at halftime and 1-0 with him in the locker room. But slowly, almost imperceptibly, the Suns began to climb back into contention with perimeter play. Midway through the fourth quarter, Wesley Person, Kidd and Mark Bryant triggered a charge that got the Suns within three. Phoenix sank seven of its first eight attempts in the quarter. Finally, a three-point play by Kevin Johnson with 3:11 left in regulation tied the score.

It was tied again at 97 after a short hook by Bryant. With a half-second left in regulation and the Suns in possession, Phoenix guard Kevin Johnson walked by the press table and said: "This game is ours." Only his timing was bad. A Tisdale miss one of several by both teams in the final minutes of the fourth quarter was the last twist and turn in regulation. The ride resumed in overtime. And that's when the Suns grabbed their first lead.

First, there was a hook by March 3 9 XfP Taw. 30 www LEADERS Suns: Jason Kidd had 23 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Mavericks: Michael Finley had 24 points and nine rebounds. BY QUARTER First Quarter Shawn Bradley had eight points and three blocks in leading the Mavericks to a fast start. He hit a short hook and a leaning bank shot, and had two of his blocks during a stretch midway through the quarter to put Dallas up by six.

The quarter ended with the Suns trailing, 29-22. Second Quarter Bradley went to the Dallas bench with two quick fouls, but Martin Muursepp stepped up with 13 points. Suns Coach Danny Ainge was charged with two technical fouls and ejected with 3:1 1 left. The half ended with Dallas leading, 62-45. Third Quarter Mavericks shot only 33.3 percent from the floor, yet they still managed to push their advantage to 27 points.

Finley scored seven points in the quarter, which ended with Dallas leading, 85-67. Fourth Quarter The Suns shot 50 percent, went 4 for 8 on three-point tries and got 10 points from Kevin Johnson to charge back into the game. The Mavericks went ice cold, shooting 28.6 percent. A 7-foot hook by Mark Bryant with 56.7 seconds left were the final points in regulation, tying the -game at 97. Overtime Wayman Tisdale took a pass from Jason Kidd and scored a layup in the final seconds as the Suns won, 109-108.
