Eighty-Fifth Year Postville Serving the Nub of the Four County Area ro cm, TO 0 t.o ii tcnl oty 1,5 ry i 1 0 Avo Jin To City, 14 Pages 2 Sections POSTVILLE, IOWA, WEDNESDAY, JULY 28, 1976 Number 30 Council Denies Hi-Way Lanes Liquor License At a special meeting of the City Council held July 19, the application for a new beer and liquor license for the Hi-Way Lanes Bowling Alley, was denied. The action was taken following a statement by Darwin Ellis, City Marshal, that there have been problems upon the Hi-Way Lanes premises. He described the bar on the premises as being in an open area, not in a separate room, and that juveniles crowd around the bar area where bowling shoe racks and the cash register are located. Ellis stated that he felt the granting of the license under the present situation would intensify law enforcement and control problems. A petition bearing 52 signatures from the congregation of the Community Presbyterian Church expressing a "no" opinion on granting of the liquor license, was also presented.

In support of his application, Mr. Hartley stated that he was very careful not to sell beer to minors, that he asked for I.D. cards and that he believed selling liquor on the premises would not add to the problems with minors. He also stated that his customers were requesting he obtain a liquor license and that he felt a denial would cause him to lose customers. Mr.

Hartley was advised of the procedures available to him, including his right to appeal the Council's decision. In other action, the Council voted to postpone the regular meeting date of August 10 to August 17 due to the anticipated absence of several council members. HOSPITAL NEWS Visiting and p. m.
