11.30: Maggie And Her (PGR, Rpt). 12.00: News Overnight. peck if we No such thing as life after the nuclear family THESE TWO new American half-hour comedies screen back-to-back each week. They both explore changing definitions of the nuclear family, so their dual programming reflects the inordinate pride of network decision-makers in being able to cope with shifting social relationships. The media notes even refer to the shows as "thoroughly It is an interesting combination, because the programs, while recognising the breakdown in traditional family role-playing, indicate an inability to consider the possibility of social units other than the nuclear family.

In Who's The Boss and Growing Pains, people simply switch roles, so that the woman works while the man son. Then there is Mona, Angela's liberal-minded mother, a comic fairy-godmother to all parties. This large Connecticut house of errors is very familiar. "She brings home the bacon and I fry it" is how Tony describes the set-up, but it seems to me that there's still a mum, a dad, two kids, that special, older, funny woman to take the edge off tense moments and a lot of money. No sexual attraction is allowed between Tony and Angela, but other romantic possibilities fade in the face of their awareness of each other and the needs of the household.

The family is still intact in Growing Pains, but after 15 years Maggie rejoins the workforce and Jason moves his psychiatric practice into the home to help in the parenting. There's a lot of money in this household as well, so family difficulties are played out against a comfortable background. Most of the interaction takes place between father and 15-year-old son, and though the show covers a lot of ground in its treatment of family tensions, it suffers from removing Maggie from domestic management She radiates understanding in the background, rather like those "nice" dads one used to see on television in shows such as The Brady Bunch. Television families have not changed so much, after all. Judith Fox WHO'S THE BOSS; GROWING PAINS On 9 at 7.30 pm and 8 pm.

stays home, or the father becomes the. main emotional wellspring for children, while the mother observes in a detached fashion reminiscent of traditional fathering. Who's The Boss attaches itself firmly to formula, revamping happy families with a keen, hungry eye on the growing audience' of working women. Tony, an Italian boy from New York, takes a job as live-in housekeeper to advertising executive Angela. He has a daughter, she has a Tony Danza as Tony Micelii, live-in housekeeper.
