Pay TV talks up in the air RACING MAXPRESNELL The privatisation of the NSW TAB was very much on the agenda with NSW Government representatives and officials of the racing industry at their meeting earlier this week. The Government now realises the TAB won't be sold for the modern-day equivalent of "a few beads, other assorted trinkets and the odd axe". Negotiations with Sky Channel over pay television are still under way, and country clubs were in Sydney yesterday for a meeting with the Australian Jockey Club over the issue. I understand there is an offer of S6,500 a meeting for bush outfits in a new contract. Figures being bandied around yesterday indicate consumers will be offered racing on pay TV for a S40 installation fee plus S9.90 a month. Clearly, though, pay TV customers will be mainly interested in Sydney meetings, and the AJC and Sydney Turf Club will now supply Sky with another price list. However, the racing industry will soon be under new management in the form of the AJC Principal Club. In another development yesterday, Murray Doyle, chairman of the Wyong club, surfaced to get the provincial clubs' nomination for the AJC Principal Club, beating well-fancied "starters" from Gosford and Hawkesbury. At Canterbury yesterday, Volcanic Mist, the 3-1 favourite in the Pick Seven Handicap, 1,100m, and Hula Flight, 3-1, the winner of the Padstow Handicap, 1,550m, were very impressive. Volcanic Mist has suffered from "arthritis changes in her joints and a right front fetlock that needs plenty of maintenance work", according to her trainer, Lee Curtis. While she beat only moderate rivals yesterday, Volcanic Mist can win better races if Curtis can hold her together. Perhaps Hula Flight, from the Gai Waterhouse stable, is a sounder proposition. Hula Flight, which had good form in New Zealand, was making her Australian debut, and may develop into a top-liner. At Eagle Farm yesterday, Lion Hunter, prepared by the well-known K. A. (Tubby) Turner, looked good under the guidance of veteran jockey Mel Schumacher when he won by 10 lengths. Despite being a four-year-old and an entire, Lion Hunter, starting at 13-8 on in the Mercherie Maiden, 1,200m, was making his debut, indicating he has had problems or Turner is super-patient. Lion Hunter is by boom stallion Danehill out of a well-performed imported mare, Pure Of Heart, thus to say he is bred in the purple is an understatement. Pure gold, more like it. Super club merger talks put on hold League Tonight's league merger talks between Sydney City, South Sydney and the Sydney Tigers have been put on hold -possibly for good. The Roosters, Souths and the Tigers have met three times at the behest of the Sydney Cricket Ground Trust to discuss the formation of an inner-Sydney "super club", and a further meeting was scheduled for tonight. But a Sydney City board meeting last night was believed to have scuttled the idea - for now at least - and the planned talks have been cancelled. Roosters chief executive Ber-nie Gurr declined to comment last night on his board's decision but confirmed that tonight's meeting was off. "I've told Noel Neate, SCG Trust general manager I would ring him tomorrow morning, and there'll probably be a statement in the next couple of days," he said. The SCG Trust, which runs the Sydney Football Stadium, has been the driving force behind the talks through a desire to have one side capable of filling the ground regularly before the League moves to Homebush in 1999. The Australian Rugby League is also believed to be keen on the idea and has indicated it would be willing to pay S3.6 million annually for the three clubs to merge, although any decision would depend on the outcome of News Limited's Federal Court appeal. B International halfback Shaun Edwards has agreed to extend his contract with Wigan, which has 16 months to run, by a further vear. SPORT IN BRIEF CYCLING Flat to the boards Manchester: Britain's Chris Boardman slashed six seconds off the world 4,000m individual pursuit record in an amazing opening to the world track championships here. His first-round time of 4min 13.353s easily lowered the world mark set by Italy's Olympic champion Andrea Collinelli at the Atlanta Games. AFL Buckley's hope Magpie Nathan Buckley's Brownlow Medal hopes are in tatters after his suspension for one match by the AFL tribunal last night. The Collingwood midfielder was found guilty of intentionally tripping the Crows' Ben Hart during the third quarter of the match in Adelaide last Sunday. TENNIS Cooper honour Ashley Cooper, who in 1958 won three grand slams and reached the semi-finals of the French Open, was inducted into the Australian Tennis Hall of Fame yesterday. ROWING Head-hunted Brian Richardson, head coach in Canada, has been appointed as Australia's new chief through to the 2000 Olympics. Richardson, 48, rowed in the Australian eight at the 1976 and 1980 Olympics and was a member of the victorious America's Cup crew in 1983. GOLF Allenby, Senior in New York: Australians Robert Allenby and Peter Senior joined Americans Kenny Perry and David Duval as the final selections for the President's Cup. The three-day matchplay event will be held in Virginia from September 13. RUGBY Honiball spark Johannesburg: Henry Honi-ball's inclusion at five-eighth will transform the Springboks into an all-out attacking unit in Saturday's final Test, All Black coach John Hart says. Honiball replaces Joel Stransky. LEAGUE Students in final London: Australia will face Western Samoa in the final of the student World Cup at Salford on Saturday. In the semi-finals, Australia beat New Zealand 26-6 and Samoa upset France 28-22. BASKETBALL Falcons swoop Newcastle guard Scott Ninnis hit a game-high 30 points to book a date with the Adelaide 36ers, one of his former clubs, in the next round of the Foxtel Cup as the Falcons beat Brisbane 105-94 in Newcastle last night CRICKET Hodge hits mark London: Victorian Brad Hodge became the Bolton League's most prolific scorer when he hit his eighth century of the season for Farnworth to take his aggregate to 1,646. CRICKET Gooch bats on London: Graham Gooch is to continue to play county cricket for at least another year. The former England captain continues to prove, at age 43, that there is no more consistent or reliable batsman in the country. RUGBY Carling omitted London: Former England captain Will Carling, Jeremy Gus-cott, Rory Underwood and Dean Richards have been left out of England's first training squad of the season.
