Ml Compadre Stadium needs busy summer 1 FX Chandler field hopes to hike revenue with more use; 1 concert scheduled r7 sriPl By JIM WALSH The Arizona Republic Chandler Compadre Stadium was idle during the summer of 1986 but should see plenty of action this summer as its owners seek to increase revenue and cut losses. The stadium was not used last summer to allow its Bermuda grass a chance to take root before the Milwaukee Brewers returned in February for a second Cactus League baseball season in Chandler. "We need to get some more use out of it to help the stadium at least break even," said Frank Pezzorello, the ball park's general manager moters arrange for private security to control the event, and that spectators use Price Road and Jacaranda Drive to avert traffic jams on Alma School Road. Other summer and fall events may include a fireworks display on July 4, which the stadium's owners hope to sponsor with the city, Pezzorello said. Additional concerts and a fall college-baseball tournament also are being planned, "but we don't have anything firm on (those) yet," Pezzorello 6aid.

In addition to helping raise revenues, "we want to promote Chandler overall" through the summer and fall events, he said. "People will come into town and see what Chandler's like." The stadium opened in 1986 at Alma School and Ocotillo roads, about four miles south of downtown. The Brewers drew 69,158 fans for 17 spring-training games this spring. Although attendence increased from 51,600 for 14 games in 1986, the baseball revenues still weren't enough to pay operating expenses for the entire year, Pezzorello said.

Pezzorello said he hopes to book 12 to 15 events during the Cactus League off-season, starting with Ml "The People's Concert" on May 17. The concert, sponsored by KSTM-FM, features local rock groups and is expected to draw 6,000 to 10,000 spectators. However, "we've taken enough precautionary measures" to ensure the playing field, and the stadium, will not be damaged, Pezzorello said. "We're not going to do acid rock." Lt. Lawrence Roberts of the Chandler Police Department said that the city's police force has no experience with concerts and that he hadn't heard of plans to schedule concerts at the stadium.

After the People's Concert was described to him, Roberts said, "I haven't heard anything that sounds like a problem." However, he suggested the pro hT." 1 4 with all 5 gala the to Join the Cinco de Map Celebration at Fiesta Mall Friday, May 1 full day of fun cultural exhibits and demonstrations.
