It's more than a dozen, anyway. And he produces much of their music.

Miller's talents came together most spectacularly in a promotional ad titled Reach for (he Rainbow, which combined live action, animation (done by Miller) and original music (also done by Miller). Produced entirely in-house a rarity in the consultant-driven TV business the spot won a top prize at the 1W PROM AX International Ciold Medallion Awards. "Because of his understanding of music and graphics, he can marry those things in ways that other people can't," Said Lynn Sucher, Channel 3's vice the country. "Hut what plays in Milwaukee or Dallas might not play in Phoenix," Sucher said. "David grew up here, so he knows what works here." Working under the corporate title David Miller Music "Il'i a very small shop," he said Miller also writes the odd commercial jingle.

"Absolutely everything that's any good, I write in my car," he said. Miller's Channel 3 playlist includes theme songs for Good Morning Arizona (sung by local country entertainer Ray Herndon), Good Evening Arizona (sung by Molly Molten, a former Channel 3 correspondent) and the new Tonight Arizona (sung by Los Angeles-based studio pro Mark Campbell). Yet the composer calls Channel 3's longtime promotional theme, Arizona's Family, "by far the most important I've ever written. That song is about everybody I work with, and it really means something to me," said Miller, whose father, Hill, is Channel 3's general manager. MAC America, Channel 3's parent company, employs a ilew of graphic artists to produce visuals for promotions and newscasts. "We all work together on a project," said Miller, who worked at Channel 10 (KSAZ) for seven years before moving to Channel 3.

"I certainly would never take credit for anything I work on exclusively." Staffers at Channel 3 call their red-ball logo "the meatball." As the stuffs computer-animation specialist, Miller puts the meatball in motion. "I have no background in art whatsoever," he said. "In fact, I cannot draw. I cannot draw a circle, I cannot draw a straight line. I could not draw a face if I had to." How then, does Miller do his job?
