He was a Vietnam War Marine veteran and also served as a firefighter and a police officer. Gerd Bucerius, publisher of 'Die Zeit' newspaper FRANKFURT, Germany Gerd Bucerius, the law-trained publisher of the respected weekly newspaper Die Zeit and who defended Jews during the Third Reich, died Friday. He was 89. Mr. Bucerius founded Die Zeit in 1946. A former Christian Democratic Union member of Parliament, he co-founded the Gruener und Jahr publishing house in 1965.

He resigned from the Christian Democrats in 1961 because he was against then-Chancellor Konrad Ade nauer running for a fourth term. Mr. Bucerius served as a judge before opening a law practice in Hamburg. During the Third Reich he defended Jews and others persecuted by the Nazis. John Calhoun, researcher studied overcrowding BALTIMORE John B.

Calhoun, a researcher who theorized on the effects of human overpopulation by studying rats and mice, died Sept. 7 of a stroke. He was 78. Mr. Calhoun served as head of the Laboratory of Brain Evolution and Behavior's unit at the National Institute of Mental Health from 1963 to 1986.

His experiments led him to believe that rodents living in large populations closest to food supplies assumed a higher social status because they grew faster than others. He also developed the theory that overcrowding eventually resulted in a generation of mice incapable of reproducing. Mr. Calhoun's work was the inspiration for the children's book Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert -C.

O'Brien, which later became the 1982 animated film The Secret of NIMH. Wire services NEW YORK Alexander Clark, an actor who worked almost constantly on Broadway for more than 50 years only to upstage himself with a single appearance as a decorator named Andre in a 1956 episode of the Jackie Gleason Show, died Saturday at his New York home. He was 94. From the moment Mr. Clark made his Broadway debut with Helen Hayes in Golden Days in 1921 until well after he joined her in her last appearance as Queen Victoria in a benefit performance of Victoria Re-gina in 1967, he rarely was out of work.

He also appeared with Ina Claire in Biography (1932); Beatrice Lillie in Too Good to Be True (1939); Canada Lee in Native Son (1942); Richard Burton in Legend of Lovers (1951); and Joseph Cotton in Calculated Risk (1962). Mr. Clark, who wrote articles for the New Yorker and other magazines, served a year as theater editor of Vanity Fair in the 1930s. He also was founder and first president of the Friends of Richard III, an organization founded in 1955 to establish that the British monarch was not the murderous thug that his Tudor successors and Shakespeare made him out to be. On television, he appeared as a film producer in a Gleason episode known as On Stage, as well as Andre, a decorator who leaves his glove behind, in Pardon My Glove.

E. Alcon, state lawmaker active in Hawaii politics LIHUE, Hawaii Emilio Alcon, a veteran state lawmaker, was found dead Friday in his hotel room on Kauai. He was 69. The cause of death was not known. Mr.

Alcon, a Democrat, served in the House from 1968 to 1970 and then returned in 1986. He served two terms as vice speaker of the House and was a member of the House Finance Committee at his death. Thursday, Queen of Peace, 141 N. MacDonald Mesa. William Lutz, 71, of Safford, a mechanic, died Oct. 1, 1995. He was a World War II Army veteran and received two bronze stars and a purple heart.

Survivors include his wife, Pauline; daughters, Shirley Prince, Gloria Phelps, Kay Morris, Vickie Hilkne and Brenda Heesaker; son, Wayner; Thomas J. McCoid, 73, of Apache Junction, a retired telephone company supervisor, died Oct. 2, 1995. He was born in Connecticut and was a World War II Navy veteran. Survivors include his son, James; sister, Zenith Mintert; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
