While Baker competes for a spot on the Dallas Cowboys' roster, Nycz, a junior, hopes to follow him from Bakersfield (Calif.) College to a starting role for the Sun Devils. Maybe Bakersfield College is a farm club for place-kickers, or maybe it's mere coincidence that Nycz (pronounced 'niece') is competing with senior Bryan Leinart and freshman Rodrigo Vera to replace Baker. Special-teams coordinator Dick Ar-buckle said he wouldn't go so far as to call the community college a Sun Devils farm club, but said he does have ties to some of, the Renegades' football coaches. Former Bakersfield College football coach Carl Bowser and offensive coordinator Duane Damron told Ar-buckle they were impressed with the way Baker was treated at ASU and suggested Nycz aS a possible replacement.

ASU Coach Bruce Snyder said when Baker left, the coaches were looking specifically for a junior college Robert Nycz and he happened to be from Bakersfield." Turning down schools such as San Diego State and Fresno State, Nycz settled on ASU after a visit, some encouraging words from his coaches, and a scholarship offer. An exercise-science major, Nycz said his ultimate goal after graduating is to play in the NFL, which he realizes is a long shot. Filling Baker's shoes is not one of his goals, however. "He's a great kicker," Nycz said. "I don't want to compare myself and try to live up' to him.

I just want to do what I'm capable of doing and do it the best I can." Nycz has the potential to be as good as Baker, Arbuckle says, but he hasn't developed the leg strength Baker has. Despite a career-best season in 1994, in which he set a national junior college kick scoring record converting 64 of 66 extra-point attempts and 11 of 13 field-goal tries, Nycz struggled early at Tontozona. "The first few days, I had it a little rough. I wasn't used to the holders or snappers here," he said. His main competition is Leinart.

It happened last month during the coaches' annual retreat atop Mount Lemmon. After falling asleep one night while watching TV, Ham-merschmidt awoke the next morning to discover a black bear had invited himself into the cabin. The bear apparently walked in after Coach Dick Tomey had gone running and left the door open. Tomey saw the bear when he returned and ran around to the back door to alert Hammerschmidt, who was asleep on a sofa in the living room. "Coach Tomey tapped me and said, 'Hammer, there's a bear right in front of I said, and he said, 'There's a bear in the living Hammerschmidt said he was more than a little scared.

And Tomey? "He was Mr. Brave Guy behind the couch," Hammerschmidt said, laughing. At no time did the bear appear threatening or threatened, for that matter Hammerschmidt said. It just opened the ice chest and helped itself to the brats before leaving through the front door and climbing a nearby tree.
