The Arizona Republic Sunday, December 10, 1995 Stately Oxford, artsy Bath make British sojourn complete- Qallas Morning Newt OXFORD, England From Lc Manoir, it's a 15-minute drive to Oxford, the land of dreamy towers and sleepy steeples. The oldest university in Britain, Oxford dates to 1167 and consists of 36 colleges scattered throughout the city of Oxford. Hitler gave explicit orders that Oxford not be bombed, everything from medieval times on is preserved. Take the hourlong narrated Oxford Tour (about $10) by open-top double-decker bus, then have lunch or tea in the cozy Parsonage Bar at the Old Parsonage Hotel (1 Banbury Road). Between Le Manoir and Lucknam Park lies the Cotswolds, a tourist's delight of an area of antiques -shops, thatched stone cottages and sheep grazing on rolling green hills dissefted by small streams.

Narrow lanes wind through charming villages and hamlets; each has at least one pub and it is usually near the church. From Lucknam Park, Bath is only six miles away. The hotel can arrange a guided tour; I highly recommend Caroline d'Estrades, an elegant woman who knows everything you need to know about this city. A World Heritage City, Bath is devoted to arts and music. And it's known for its 18th-century architecture exemplified by the Crescent, a curved terrace of houses once used by visitors on holiday.

Dc tour the Museum of Costume, one of the best collections of clothing and accessories from the 16th century to the present (in the Assembly Rooms on Bennett Street). Also; popular are the Roman Baths Museum and Pump Room (Stall Street), where you may enjoy tea and a Bath bun to the accompani-' ment of the Pump Room Trio. In summer flowers bloom in profusion in the city. "Everyone wishes they had more time to. spend in Bath," d'Estrades says.
